Install the language-specific A2A dependencies, use an Agent Card to discover and check the remote agent, and then manage the interaction as a message or task lifecycle. Keep MCP for agent-to-tool and data connections: A2A complements it rather than replacing it.
What A2A does in a Strands application
A2A, or Agent2Agent, is an open protocol for communication and collaboration between independent AI agents. Strands describes its purpose as letting Strands agents call agents built on other platforms and frameworks, and allowing those agents to call Strands agents. It is an interoperability layer, not an agent development kit.
Use Strands’ normal agent and tool primitives to build an agent and connect it to tools or data. Use A2A at the boundary where that agent communicates with a separate remote agent. MCP remains the complementary protocol for agent-to-tool and data interactions; A2A handles agent-to-agent communication.

#1 Best Overall
- Python:
pip install 'strands-agents[a2a]' - TypeScript:
npm install @strands-agents/sdk @a2a-js/sdk express
For Python, Strands provides the A2AAgent class to wrap communication with a remote A2A agent. The TypeScript installation includes the Strands SDK, the A2A JavaScript SDK, and Express; consult the corresponding SDK documentation for the API and server setup appropriate to your project.
Use the Agent Card as the discovery contract
An A2A Agent Card advertises the agent’s identity, capabilities, skills, endpoint, and authentication requirements. Treat it as the contract for deciding whether and how to send work to that agent—not merely as a directory entry.
Rank #2
- Check that the advertised endpoint is the one your application is intended to call.
- Compare the advertised skills and capabilities with the work you plan to delegate.
- Determine what authentication the remote agent requires before attempting a request.
A card describes what the agent advertises; it does not by itself establish that the agent is suitable for a particular task or that your application has the required access.
Handle an A2A interaction as a message and task lifecycle
The protocol supports sending messages, streaming, retrieving tasks, listing tasks, and cancelling tasks. Its schema includes JSON-RPC, gRPC, and HTTP+JSON bindings. The binding and interaction pattern you use need to be compatible with the remote agent.

- Discover and validate: inspect the Agent Card’s endpoint, skills, capabilities, and authentication requirements.
- Send or stream work: use a message operation for a request, or streaming when the interaction calls for incremental responses and the remote implementation supports it.
- Track longer work: retrieve or list tasks as needed rather than assuming every request completes as a single immediate response.
- Cancel when appropriate: use task cancellation when ongoing work should no longer continue and the interaction is represented as a cancellable task.
These are protocol operations, not a guarantee that every server supports every binding or behaves identically. Check the target agent’s advertised details and implementation documentation, especially when choosing between a synchronous exchange, streaming, or longer-running task handling.
Deploy a Strands A2A agent on AWS
AWS documents a path using AgentCore Runtime to scaffold a Strands A2A project. The scaffold uses the AgentCore CLI with Python, the Strands framework, and the --protocol A2A option. The AWS example wraps the Strands agent with StrandsA2AExecutor to provide protocol compatibility.
Rank #4
- Use the AgentCore CLI scaffold for a Python project, select the Strands framework, and specify
--protocol A2A. - In the resulting A2A implementation, wrap the Strands agent with
StrandsA2AExecutor, as shown in the AWS example. - Before connecting a caller, verify the deployed agent’s card and endpoint, the authentication requirements, and the interaction behavior your client needs.
The scaffold and executor are the documented AWS route described here; this does not imply that every Strands A2A deployment must run on AgentCore Runtime.

When evaluating whether a Strands agent can work with another A2A implementation, check these dimensions together:
Best Value
- Protocol version: the official A2A specification page identifies version 1.0.0 as the latest released version; it also lists 0.3.0, 0.2.6, and 0.1.0. Confirm which version the implementations on both sides support.
- Transport binding: the schema covers JSON-RPC, gRPC, and HTTP+JSON. Confirm the binding used by the client and server.
- Discovery and authentication: review the Agent Card’s endpoint and authentication requirements.
- Interaction model: determine whether the application needs a direct message response, streaming, or task retrieval and cancellation for longer work.
- Language and hosting: select the relevant Strands SDK and decide whether to run the service locally or use a managed deployment such as the documented AgentCore Runtime route.
AWS characterizes A2A as a newer standard with more limited adoption than MCP. That qualitative assessment is a reason to check the specific systems you intend to connect; the available evidence does not establish a universal interoperability rate, performance figure, or latency advantage.
