A19 Pro is the newer, Pro-tier chip in iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max; standard A18 powers iPhone 16. Geekbench’s displayed device listings favor iPhone 17 Pro in both CPU and GPU Compute results, but they compare submitted phone runs—not the chips under identical conditions. Apple’s sustained-performance claim also includes iPhone 17 Pro’s vapor chamber and refers to the previous Pro generation, so it is not a direct A19 Pro-versus-A18 result.
Which chips and phones are being compared?
This is a comparison of A19 Pro in iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max against standard A18 in iPhone 16. It is not a comparison with A18 Pro, the different chip used in iPhone 16 Pro. Keeping the tiers distinct matters: figures or claims about A18 Pro should not be treated as standard A18 specifications.
A19 Pro vs A18 specifications
Apple’s September 9, 2025 iPhone 17 Pro announcement specifies the A19 Pro configuration. It does not provide a complete side-by-side specification table against standard A18, so missing values should not be inferred.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Specification | A19 Pro | Standard A18 |
|---|---|---|
| Phone association | iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max (Apple, September 9, 2025 announcement) | iPhone 16 (identified in Geekbench Browser listings) |
| CPU | 6 cores (Apple) | A matched official CPU specification row is not stated in the cited A19 Pro announcement |
| GPU | 6 cores, each with a Neural Accelerator (Apple) | A matched official GPU specification row is not stated in the cited A19 Pro announcement |
| Neural Engine | 16 cores (Apple) | A matched official Neural Engine specification row is not stated in the cited A19 Pro announcement |
| Memory | Apple says A19 Pro has more memory than A18 Pro; this does not establish a comparison with standard A18 | Not stated in the cited A19 Pro announcement |
| Process, maximum clock speed, memory bandwidth, Neural Engine throughput | Not stated in the cited A19 Pro announcement | Not stated in the cited A19 Pro announcement |
Apple also describes hardware ray tracing and Neural Accelerators as part of the A19 Pro platform. These are feature and architecture descriptions, not measured speed multiples. Likewise, the standard A19 in iPhone 17 should not be substituted for A19 Pro: Apple describes the standard A19 as having a 5-core GPU, whereas A19 Pro has a 6-core GPU.

What do the A19 Pro vs A18 benchmarks show?
Geekbench Browser’s displayed device listings show higher results for iPhone 17 Pro (A19 Pro) than for iPhone 16 (A18). The figures are database results from submitted runs, not a controlled chip-only test. Geekbench scores can vary with test version, operating system, device configuration, thermal conditions, and the runs represented in the listing.
| Geekbench comparison | iPhone 17 Pro (A19 Pro) | iPhone 16 (A18) | How to read it |
|---|---|---|---|
| CPU device-listing score (Geekbench Browser, captured 2026) | 8,775 | 7,585 | Higher displayed result for iPhone 17 Pro; a user-submitted device listing, not an identical-condition chip test. iPhone 17 Pro listing; iPhone 16 listing. |
| GPU Compute (Geekbench Browser, captured 2026) | 47,316 | 28,643 | The displayed comparison is 60.5% higher for iPhone 17 Pro. Recorded versions differ: Geekbench 6.7.0 for iPhone 17 Pro and 6.6.0 for iPhone 16, with differing system conditions. This is not a general chip-performance uplift. iPhone 17 Pro listing; iPhone 16 listing. |
Do not combine the CPU and GPU Compute figures into one overall percentage. They represent different workloads, and the GPU comparison specifically uses different Geekbench versions. The live browser listings may change as new results are submitted.

How to interpret Apple’s sustained-performance claim
Apple said on September 9, 2025 that, “When paired with the Apple-designed vapor chamber, A19 Pro enables iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max to deliver up to 40 percent better sustained performance than the previous generation.” This is a vendor claim about sustained performance of the phone system, including its thermal design, compared with the previous Pro generation. It is not a direct comparison with standard A18 in iPhone 16, and it should not be presented as a chip-only benchmark.

What the available evidence does—and does not—establish
- Apple’s published A19 Pro description establishes its core counts and Neural Accelerator architecture, but not a full matched specification table against standard A18.
- The Geekbench Browser figures provide a snapshot of submitted iPhone results. They do not establish how much faster A19 Pro is in every app, workload, or thermal condition.
- The available results do not establish an A19 Pro-versus-standard-A18 CPU test using identical phone conditions, software versions, and thermal conditions.
- Apple’s up-to-40-percent sustained-performance statement concerns A19 Pro paired with iPhone 17 Pro’s vapor chamber and compares against the previous generation; it should not be recast as a standard-A18 comparison.
