EE Times’ analysis, “A Week Is a Long Time at OpenAI,” set those events against OpenAI’s earlier governance disputes, safety debates and rapid growth. It documented public explanations and reported context, but did not establish a shared reason for the exits—or prove that safety concerns caused them.
What happened in that week?
EE Times published Sally Ward-Foxton’s analysis on October 7, 2024. It described departures by three senior technical leaders: Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati, Chief Research Officer Bob McGrew and Vice President of Research Barret Zoph. Their announcements came around the time OpenAI announced a financing round.
Ward-Foxton quoted each leader’s public explanation. Murati wrote that “there’s never an ideal time to step away from a place one cherishes, but this moment feels right.” McGrew said, “It is time for me to take a break.” Zoph wrote, “Right now feels like a natural point for me to explore new opportunities outside of OpenAI.” The article also quoted CEO Sam Altman describing the decisions as “independently of each other and amicably.” These are the explanations reported in the October 2024 article; they do not disclose or establish any private motive. EE Times, October 7, 2024.
Did the departures have a common cause?
The article does not establish one. It places the exits alongside episodes that had drawn attention to OpenAI’s governance and safety practices, but context and timing are not evidence that those events caused the departures.

The 2023 leadership crisis
Ward-Foxton recalled the November 2023 episode in which OpenAI’s board removed Altman, who briefly joined Microsoft before returning as OpenAI CEO less than a week later. The article said the board’s stated concern was that Altman had not been consistently candid in his communications. It also referred to later criticism of OpenAI’s safety processes attributed to former board member Helen Toner.
Research departures and safety questions
The analysis also mentioned earlier departures by Andrej Karpathy and Ilya Sutskever, and Sutskever’s formation of Safe Superintelligence Inc. It discussed OpenAI’s o1 model, launched three weeks before the article appeared, in the context of its reasoning approach and safety training as understood at the time. Ward-Foxton raised the possibility that safety concerns might relate to the October exits, but presented that as a question, not a demonstrated explanation.

That distinction matters: the departures and prior disputes are reported events; a connection between them is an interpretation the article does not verify. The article is a historical analysis, not a current account of OpenAI’s leadership or policies.
What did the funding announcement add?
EE Times reported that OpenAI raised $6.6 billion at a $157 billion post-money valuation in the same week. For comparison, the article said xAI had raised $6 billion earlier in 2024. These are figures reported in the October 2024 article, not present-day valuations or funding totals. EE Times’ account of the funding round.

The timing created a striking contrast: departures among senior technical leaders alongside a large financing announcement. It did not, by itself, show that the round was connected to their decisions. The article discussed compute costs, GPU access, model training and infrastructure investment as business pressures, and suggested funding could support cloud compute or future infrastructure. Those passages were analysis, not confirmation of specific spending plans or a custom-chip project.
What did the article report about OpenAI’s structure and finances?
All of these details describe the situation as presented in October 2024; they should not be read as a current corporate or financial update.

Structure and reported proposals
Ward-Foxton described OpenAI at the time as having a nonprofit organization and a for-profit arm whose investor returns were capped at 100 times. The article attributed to Axios a report that investors wanted a restructuring within two years, and to Bloomberg the statement that the nonprofit was core to the mission and would continue to exist. It also discussed reporting and debate about possible equity for Altman, while noting that terms had not been settled in the reports it cited. These were reports and proposals, not completed changes established by the article.
Users and financial forecasts
The article reported that ChatGPT had 250 million weekly users at the time. It also attributed to The New York Times a forecast that OpenAI expected $5 billion in operating losses on $3.7 billion in revenue for 2024. The user figure is historical, and the financial figures are a forecast attributed by EE Times—not an audited result or a statement of current performance.

How to read “A Week Is a Long Time at OpenAI”
Ward-Foxton’s piece is useful as a dated record of what was announced and what questions those announcements raised. Its evidence has different strengths: named leaders’ public explanations and Altman’s characterization are direct statements as reproduced by the article; financing, user and forecast numbers are reported or attributed claims; connections between events and possible motives are analysis.
The article’s central tension—whether the departures marked separate personal decisions or a wider organizational story—remains unresolved by the evidence it presents. A careful reading preserves that uncertainty rather than turning the timing, safety discussion or corporate context into a causal verdict.
