To choose well, check your actual memory, runtime compatibility, task needs, and willingness to trade speed for a smaller model representation.
What AI Hardware Fit can help you find
The project post describes AI Hardware Fit as a GPU-first discovery tool. It presents possible local-model candidates, suggested quantization, estimated VRAM and speed ranges, and launch commands for Ollama or llama.cpp. You can use it to narrow the field, then verify the model and runner against your own system. The project description does not provide an independent accuracy evaluation or a reproducible method for its speed estimates. Read the AI Hardware Fit project post on Hugging Face Forums.
Start with the memory and hardware you actually have
Before comparing model names, identify where your computer can place model data: discrete GPU VRAM, system RAM, or unified memory. Record the capacity available to the runner, not just the headline memory figure for the device. Then check which inference runtime and hardware backend you can use. A GPU-first suggestion may not describe the best option for a system that primarily relies on CPU or unified memory.
The llama.cpp project lists backends including CUDA for NVIDIA GPUs, HIP for AMD GPUs, Metal for Apple silicon, Vulkan, and CPU-oriented options. Check its current documentation for the supported backends and setup details that match your device and operating system: llama.cpp project documentation.

Why parameter count alone does not determine fit
Two configurations of the same model can have different memory demands and quality characteristics. Quantization changes how model values are represented; llama.cpp documents integer quantization options from 1.5-bit through 8-bit. Lower-bit representations can reduce memory use, but the model’s format and resulting behavior matter too. The available sources do not establish a universal formula that predicts actual memory requirements from parameter count or quantization alone.
Also account for the task and context you need. A model that appears to fit may not be the best choice if it lacks the capability you need, or if your intended context length and workload leave too little memory headroom. Compare specific configurations rather than treating a parameter count as a complete fit test.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
How to compare candidate models
Use the same practical questions for each candidate. If you are comparing several models or configurations, capture the answers side by side:
| What to compare | What to check |
|---|---|
| Available memory | Usable VRAM, system RAM, or unified memory on the machine running inference. |
| Runtime and backend | Whether the model format and runner work with your operating system and available backend, such as CUDA, HIP, Metal, Vulkan, or CPU. |
| Quantization | The chosen representation and corresponding model-file size; do not assume every configuration behaves identically. |
| Task capability | Whether the candidate suits the work you want it to do, rather than merely fitting in memory. |
| Context needs | Whether the configuration can accommodate the context you expect to use. |
| Responsiveness | Estimated or locally measured speed for your own configuration, kept distinct from a general claim about the model. |
Read speed estimates as estimates
AI Hardware Fit’s project post describes speed ranges as estimates, but does not state a validation method or provide a reproducible benchmark. A displayed range is therefore a rough selection aid, not a promised tokens-per-second result. Actual responsiveness depends on the specific hardware, software configuration, model representation, and workload; confirm it with the runner and setup you plan to use before relying on a speed figure.

When CPU and GPU hybrid inference may help
llama.cpp supports CPU+GPU hybrid inference, which can partially accelerate models larger than the available total VRAM. That capability can make an oversized model a candidate to try, but it does not guarantee that every such model will run successfully or at a speed you find acceptable. If a model fits only by offloading some work to the CPU, treat the result as a performance trade-off to evaluate on your machine.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical way to use the tool
- Identify your memory and hardware. Note the usable VRAM, system RAM, or unified memory, and the operating system and accelerator you intend to use.
- Check backend support. Confirm that your chosen runner supports the relevant hardware and that the model format is compatible; consult the llama.cpp documentation if you plan to use llama.cpp.
- Use AI Hardware Fit to narrow candidates. Review its model suggestions, quantization options, VRAM estimates, speed ranges, and runner commands in light of your system.
- Choose for the job, not just the fit estimate. Consider capability and context needs alongside memory and quantization.
- Try the exact configuration you intend to use. Treat estimated speed as provisional, and assess responsiveness locally, including whether CPU offload is acceptable if you need hybrid inference.
Model catalogs and runner support change over time, so check the project and runtime documentation when making a current choice.
