To set up an MCP server for browser automation, register Microsoft Playwright MCP in an MCP client, then ask the client to perform browser actions. The smallest documented configuration launches the server with Node.js and npx. This guide walks through the prerequisites, configuration, first TodoMVC task, capability choices, deployment options, security considerations, and troubleshooting.
What MCP and Playwright MCP each do
Model Context Protocol (MCP) connects an AI client to tools. An MCP server publishes those tools; the client decides when to call them during an interaction. Playwright MCP is an MCP server that supplies Playwright-backed browser automation tools, including navigation, accessibility snapshots, clicks, typing, and other core actions.
The distinction matters: MCP is the connection and tool-calling protocol, while Playwright MCP is the browser-automation implementation. Your AI client remains the place where you enter instructions and review results.
Prerequisites
- Node.js 20 or newer. Check with
node --version. - An MCP-compatible client. Examples in the official getting-started guidance include VS Code, Cursor, Claude Code, and Claude Desktop. Each client has its own configuration screen or file.
- A reachable browser environment. Playwright MCP can download its browser automatically on first use, according to the getting-started documentation.
If your client runs in a container, remote machine, or headless server, also verify that the process can launch a browser and reach the target websites.

About @latest
@latest is convenient for a first experiment but is a moving package tag. For repeatable development or production automation, consult the Playwright MCP package and versioning guidance and pin a version that you have reviewed. - The agent calls a navigation tool for the TodoMVC URL.
- Playwright MCP returns a structured accessibility snapshot of the page.
- The snapshot exposes semantic information such as a textbox, checkbox, visible text, roles, and stable element references.
- The agent uses those references to type a todo, submit it, and inspect the updated page.
- The agent repeats the operation for the remaining items and reports the result.
This workflow is based on accessibility structure, not on interpreting a screenshot alone. If the page changes, the agent can request a fresh snapshot and choose references from the new page state.
Why accessibility snapshots are useful
- Less ambiguity: roles and labels identify controls more reliably than screen coordinates.
- Actionable references: the model can target the textbox or checkbox returned by the browser tool.
- State awareness: after typing or navigation, a new snapshot shows what changed.
- Better non-visual operation: the client can work in headless environments where no desktop is displayed.
Snapshots do not eliminate normal automation problems. Dynamic content, authentication, overlays, consent dialogs, and blocked resources can still require an explicit wait or a different action.
Keep the tool surface narrow first
Core Playwright MCP tools cover navigation, snapshots, clicks, typing, and basic browser actions. Optional capability groups add areas such as network access, storage, testing, vision, PDF generation, and developer tools.

The documentation recommends exposing only the capabilities a workflow needs. Start with the default core group; enable an optional group deliberately after identifying the exact task that requires it. Fewer tools can reduce schema size and prevent the model from choosing an unsuitable action.
Transport and browser choices
Local stdio (the quick-start path)
The JSON example launches a local npx process and communicates with it through the client’s local process connection. This is usually the simplest arrangement for one developer and one workstation.

Standalone HTTP
The configuration reference also documents running Playwright MCP as an HTTP server on a port and pointing an MCP client at its /mcp endpoint. HTTP can suit a separately managed process or a shared internal deployment. Do not expose that endpoint publicly unless you have designed authentication, network restrictions, and browser-data isolation for the environment.
Headed versus headless
The browser is headed by default. Use the documented --headless option when no display is available or when you want background execution. Keep headed mode when an operator needs to watch the browser or diagnose a visual interaction.
Browser, device, and network settings
The configuration reference documents selecting Chrome (the default), Firefox, WebKit, or Edge; device emulation; proxy settings; and HTTP-server settings. Choose these per workflow rather than assuming that a setting used for one site is correct for all sites.
Secrets, profiles, and security boundaries
Playwright MCP documents a secrets-file option. Matching plain-text secrets in tool responses can be redacted, and placeholders can substitute secret values while typing. The documentation explicitly cautions: “This is a convenience, not a security boundary.”
Plan security around the process itself:
- Use a browser profile that contains only the accounts and data required for the task.
- Review which local files, authenticated pages, network destinations, proxies, and origins the server can reach.
- Use documented allowed-host and allowed-origin controls where appropriate, while treating them as configuration controls rather than proof of complete isolation.
- Avoid sending production credentials to an exploratory agent session.
- For HTTP deployments, restrict listening interfaces and place access controls in front of the endpoint.
- Log tool calls without recording passwords, session cookies, or other sensitive page content.
Playwright MCP or Playwright CLI?
The vendor’s comparison frames MCP as a fit for specialized agent loops and exploratory automation, where structured tool calls are useful. It frames the Playwright CLI as a fit for coding agents working in large codebases and notes lower token cost in that comparison. Those are documentation characterizations, not a universal performance benchmark. Select MCP when your client already speaks MCP and you want browser tools during an interactive agent conversation; select the CLI when command-line integration and repository-oriented workflows are the better fit.

Troubleshooting
The client cannot start the server
- Run
node --versionand install Node.js 20 or newer if necessary. - Run
npx @playwright/mcp@latestin a terminal to surface package or permission errors. - Check that the client’s JSON is valid and that the command is available in the client process’s PATH.
- Reload the client after changing its MCP configuration.
The browser does not appear
Headed mode needs a usable display. On a server or container, switch to --headless and verify that the browser can launch. The first run may download a browser, so allow network access and enough disk space.
The agent cannot find a control
Ask it to take a fresh accessibility snapshot after navigation, a modal opening, or a page update. Check whether a cookie banner, login wall, iframe, or other overlay is intercepting the action. Prefer the semantic role and visible label returned by the snapshot over guessed coordinates.
A page times out or stays blank
Confirm the URL is reachable from the machine running the server, inspect proxy and DNS settings, and try an explicit wait for a known selector or state. A site may also require authentication, JavaScript, or a browser engine different from the default.
An optional tool is missing
Enable the capability group that owns the required function, then restart the server. Keep the group disabled if the workflow does not need it.
Secrets appear in an unexpected place
Do not rely on redaction as containment. Remove unnecessary credentials, use a restricted profile, and review tool responses and logs for sensitive data.
