A useful engineering roadmap can be built without making video tutorials its backbone—but it cannot be made field-neutral. Choose a discipline and goal first, then sequence mathematics and science, engineering fundamentals, practical work, and a substantial design project. This is a planning framework, not a substitute for an accredited degree or professional qualification.
Start by defining the engineering field and the goal
“Engineering” is too broad to determine which advanced subjects, tools, or projects belong in a self-study plan. Select a field—such as civil, electrical, mechanical, or aerospace engineering—and define what you want to be able to do: understand the fundamentals, prepare for further formal study, or complete a particular kind of design project. The endpoint determines what belongs in the roadmap.
Formal education frameworks can help identify important categories of learning, but they do not certify an independent learner’s plan. ABET’s 2026–2027 criteria describe requirements for accredited engineering programs; ASCE’s Civil Engineering Body of Knowledge (CEBOK) is specifically a civil-engineering outcome map. Neither establishes that a self-study sequence is equivalent to an accredited program.

Lay out prerequisite mathematics and basic sciences for the chosen discipline. Make the plan active: pair each subject with problems to solve and a way to check the work, rather than treating reading or watching explanations as evidence of mastery.

ABET’s 2026–2027 criteria call for at least 30 semester credit hours or equivalent of college-level mathematics and basic sciences, including experimental experience, within an accredited engineering program. That is a curriculum criterion—not a recommended personal study duration or a target that can be met simply by logging hours.
Map the engineering core to the discipline
Once prerequisites are in place, identify the engineering topics and tools specific to the field. Use the relevant ABET program criteria, where available, or a professional body of knowledge as a checklist for topics to investigate. For civil engineering, ASCE describes its CEBOK as a roadmap organized around 21 learning outcomes; that count describes the framework, not a promised result from following a self-study plan.
ABET’s 2026–2027 criteria call for at least 45 semester credit hours or equivalent of engineering topics, including engineering and computer sciences and engineering design using modern engineering tools. The figure describes accredited-program curriculum content; it does not define how long independent study takes or prove that any particular resource or sequence is sufficient.
Make practice, evidence, and communication part of the plan
Engineering knowledge needs to be used and communicated. Schedule work that involves interpreting results, documenting assumptions, and explaining technical decisions. Where appropriate and safe, include experiments or simulations; record what was measured or modeled, what the result supports, and what remains uncertain. Seek feedback from knowledgeable people when possible, since a self-directed learner may otherwise have limited ways to catch errors.
ABET’s student outcomes include designing solutions with appropriate consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors. They also include communication, ethical responsibility, teamwork, experimentation and interpretation of data, and acquiring and applying new knowledge. These outcomes are reminders to plan for more than technical problem sets.
Finish with an integrative design project
Choose a substantial project that brings earlier subjects together. Define the need, constraints, assumptions, and criteria for success; use appropriate tools; document the design process and results; and explain the trade-offs. Keep the project within your competence and use suitable supervision and safety practices for any physical work.
ABET’s baccalaureate engineering criteria explicitly include a culminating major engineering design experience. A self-study project can provide a way to practice integration and documentation, but completing one does not confer accreditation or demonstrate professional qualification.
Use non-video resources as a choice, not a claim of superiority
A roadmap that skips video tutorials can rely on texts, problem sets, technical references, standards, software documentation, and project records. An engineering design textbook may be a useful optional reference at the design stage, but no particular title or edition is established here. The format itself is not proof of learning: choose resources that let you work through problems, check assumptions, and get feedback where possible.

Keep the roadmap revisable
For each topic, note the prerequisite, the work you will produce, and how you will check it. Revisit the sequence when a later subject exposes a gap. ABET’s outcomes include acquiring and applying new knowledge using appropriate learning strategies, which supports treating learning methods as an ongoing part of engineering education—not as a one-time choice of medium.
