For repeatable application migrations, encode each code change as a deterministic recipe, apply it to source with semantic context, and verify the resulting diff with tests and review. OpenRewrite is an open-source refactoring ecosystem built around that approach: its recipes transform Lossless Semantic Trees (LSTs) and print the result while preserving source formatting. AI can help identify intent or explain a migration, but a tested recipe is better suited to making the same controlled change consistently across a codebase.
Why deterministic modernization matters
A large portfolio makes one-off edits hard to repeat and audit. Mark Heckler of Moderne described the scale as thousands of applications and billions of lines of code in a 2025 InfoWorld article. At that scale, a migration needs more than a script that happens to work once: teams need to know what it changes, verify the output, and rerun it consistently.
OpenRewrite’s official documentation describes it as an open-source automated refactoring ecosystem for reducing technical debt in repositories. Its recipe catalog is described as containing hundreds of pre-built transformations. Recipes can be composed into larger migrations, so teams can combine focused changes instead of maintaining a single opaque transformation.
What an LST adds beyond an AST
AST: the code’s structure
An abstract syntax tree (AST) represents the grammatical structure of source code. It helps tools reason about constructs such as method calls and declarations rather than treating a file as an undifferentiated string.

LST: structure plus source fidelity and semantics
A Lossless Semantic Tree retains comments, whitespace, and formatting so the transformed source can preserve the original style. It also carries semantic information such as method overload resolution, generic parameters, inheritance, and types across modules. That distinction matters when a recipe should change a method from a particular library but leave a similarly named method in custom code alone.
OpenRewrite recipes operate on these trees and print the changed tree back to source. The combination of source fidelity and resolved types supports more precise edits than broad text replacement, while still producing ordinary source files that developers can review.

These approaches can work together. Use AI to clarify what should change or help select and coordinate recipes; let a deterministic recipe make the repeatable source transformation. Neither semantic tooling nor deterministic execution removes the need to inspect the change and run the project’s checks.
A practical workflow for a migration
- Inventory the estate and narrow the objective. Identify the repositories, frameworks, and migration target. A narrowly defined objective is easier to test and roll out than a broad instruction such as “modernize the application.”
- Discover before changing. Run search or discovery recipes to find affected code and export the findings for review. Use the results to check whether the proposed migration matches the estate’s actual usage.
- Select or author the recipe. OpenRewrite recipes can be written declaratively in YAML or imperatively in Java. Prefer small recipes with clear responsibilities, then compose them when a migration requires multiple changes.
- Start with a representative repository. Run the recipe through the OpenRewrite Maven or Gradle plugin on a repository that reflects the code patterns you expect to encounter. Review the diff for both intended changes and unintended matches.
- Verify expected output and behavior. Add before-and-after recipe fixtures to assert the exact source output. Then run the project’s build and tests; a fixture checks the transformation, while the project checks help detect effects that a source-output assertion cannot establish by itself.
- Promote through CI/CD in waves. Once the recipe and representative results are reviewed, integrate execution into the team’s CI/CD process and expand to additional repositories in manageable groups. Preserve the recipe version and resulting diffs alongside normal change records so the rollout can be traced.
- Coordinate portfolio execution where needed. Maven and Gradle plugins are suited to running recipes in one repository. Moderne is the commercial layer for coordinating recipes across many repositories, CI/CD, and portfolio reporting; Mark Heckler’s 2025 InfoWorld description likewise presents it for work spanning thousands of repositories and billions of lines.
How to test and audit a recipe
A recipe is not trustworthy simply because it runs without error. Treat its expected source output as a testable contract, and review the actual migration as a code change.

- Fixture coverage: include examples that should change and similar-looking examples that should not. Assert the exact before-and-after source, including relevant comments and formatting.
- Semantic boundaries: exercise cases that distinguish the target library type or method from a custom type with the same name, as well as relevant overloads, generics, inheritance, or module boundaries.
- Repeatability: rerun the recipe against its output and check that it makes no further unintended changes. Idempotence is a useful property of a migration recipe, not a substitute for checking what its first run changes.
- Repository validation: inspect the diff, build the project, and run its tests before broad rollout. A clean fixture result does not prove every application behavior is correct.
- Traceability: keep the recipe and its configuration under version control, and retain reviewable diffs and execution results through CI/CD. This makes it possible to see which transformation was applied and what it changed.
What deterministic recipes do—and do not—guarantee
Determinism means the same recipe applied to the same applicable source produces repeatable transformations; it does not mean every recipe is correct for every repository, or that a migration cannot alter behavior. Precision depends on how well the recipe captures the intended change, and verification still belongs in the workflow.
Upfront modeling is the main trade-off. Text replacement may be quicker for a simple literal change, and AI may be more flexible when the desired edit is not yet well specified. A recipe becomes valuable when the transformation must be repeatable across code, reviewed, tested, and composed with other changes.
