Use Storybook to build and review UI states outside the full application: install it in your project, create stories for the states that matter, then add the right mix of interaction, accessibility, visual, and end-to-end checks. Stories make component behavior repeatable; they do not replace tests of the complete running app.

What Storybook adds to a UI development workflow

Storybook runs alongside a frontend project and renders components or pages in isolation. A story captures one rendered state, such as a default button, a disabled button, or a form with a validation message. One component can have multiple stories, giving developers and reviewers a repeatable catalog of variants without navigating through the whole application.

That isolation is useful during implementation, when the full app is slow to start or a particular state is difficult to reach with real data. It also makes the catalog useful for checking whether a suitable component or pattern already exists before creating a new one.

Install Storybook in the project

Run the current CLI from the repository root

  1. Open a terminal at the root of the existing frontend project.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
    • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
    • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
    • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
    • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
    • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  2. Run npm create storybook@latest. The current installation guide says the CLI examines project dependencies and suggests an available configuration. Follow the prompts for the framework and setup it detects. See the official installation guide for current instructions and compatibility requirements.

  3. Review the generated configuration, package scripts, and sample stories. Confirm that the chosen framework and bundler match the application, then run the generated Storybook development script as shown by the setup.

  4. Open the local Storybook address printed in the terminal and verify that the sample stories render. Replace or adapt the sample rather than treating initialization as a completed UI catalog.

Framework support and minimum runtime, package-manager, and browser versions can change. Check the live installation guide for the project’s versions instead of relying on a frozen compatibility list.

Choose stories that help implementation and review

Start with a small set of meaningful states for each component. The goal is not to make a story for every theoretical combination; it is to make important behavior easy to see, reproduce, and discuss.

  • Default: the common state a user sees.
  • Variants: meaningful alternatives such as size, emphasis, or disabled state.
  • Boundary states: empty, loading, error, long-content, or otherwise unusual states that can be missed in a routine app session.
  • Interaction states: states reached after an action, such as opening a menu or submitting invalid form data.

For each story, provide the props and data needed to render it reliably. If a state depends on an external service or application-specific setup, supply a controlled example rather than making the story depend on a live backend. A useful catalog makes a component’s intended range visible while keeping its examples repeatable.

Use the catalog while building the application

  1. Browse the existing components and stories before introducing a new pattern.

  2. Inspect the stories for a component that appears close to the needed design, including its variants and edge cases.

  3. Reuse the component or story definition in application code where it fits, then connect it to the application’s real data and behavior.

Storybook’s stories documentation explains the story model; its browse-stories guide describes discovery and reuse. A story is a development and documentation example, not a substitute for wiring the component into its real application context.

Test behavior, accessibility, and appearance at the right level

Different checks catch different failures. Choose checks according to the question that needs an answer rather than treating one test type as comprehensive.

Check Best question it answers Limitation or trade-off
Interaction or component test Does the component respond correctly to an important user action? It does not automatically cover every browser, integration, or full-application path.
Accessibility check Are there detectable rule violations in this rendered state? Automated scans are heuristic; incomplete findings need human review.
Visual regression Did the rendered appearance change from the accepted baseline? A person still needs to judge whether a difference is intended.
Unit or snapshot test Did logic or rendered output differ from an expected result? Snapshots can add upkeep, and other story-based checks may provide broader useful coverage.
End-to-end test Does a real user flow work through the full application? It needs the running application stack and serves a broader test layer.

Check interactions with story-based tests

Add checks for important actions and assert the outcomes that matter: for example, that a menu opens after activation or that invalid input displays an error. Storybook stories can be reused as cases with test tools such as Vitest or Jest. The official testing documentation recommends the Vitest addon for projects using Vite. Select a tool compatible with the project’s test setup rather than duplicating every assertion in multiple places.

Use accessibility automation as an audit, not a verdict

Storybook’s accessibility addon checks the rendered DOM against axe-core rules and reports violations, passes, and incomplete cases. Configure its todo behavior to surface existing issues as warnings, or error when violations should fail tests or CI. The distinction matters when introducing checks to a project with existing findings.

An automated scan can identify detectable problems, but an incomplete result needs human follow-up and a passing scan does not establish that an interface is accessible. Review keyboard operation, focus order, understandable labels, and the experience with assistive technology as appropriate. Storybook’s accessibility testing guide explains the addon’s findings and configuration.

Compare screenshots when appearance regressions matter

Visual regression checks capture story screenshots and compare them with accepted baselines. They can catch unintended layout or styling changes that behavior tests will not. Diffs still need review: a changed screenshot may be a desired design update or an accidental regression. Storybook documents Chromatic as a cloud option for cross-browser visual testing in its visual testing guide.

Keep component checks and full-app tests complementary

Stories are strongest for repeatable component and page states. They can support local development and be reused in testing tools, but an isolated render does not prove that the whole application, backend, routing, and data flow work together.

Use a full end-to-end test with a tool such as Playwright or Cypress for journeys that depend on the running application stack. Keep those tests focused on integrated user flows; use stories and component-level checks for the states that are cheaper and clearer to validate in isolation.

Run checks in CI and share Storybook for review

Once local checks are useful, run the same selected checks in the project’s continuous integration pipeline so changes are evaluated consistently. Storybook’s testing guide includes a GitHub Actions example. Treat its action, container, and runtime versions as example values and verify them against current requirements when implementing your workflow.

Share or publish Storybook when colleagues or stakeholders need to inspect states and provide feedback without running the full app locally. This is especially useful for reviewing variants and edge cases that are hard to reach in a normal application session.

Or skip the browser setup
