A reliable UI component test starts with a reproducible state, performs an action a user could take, and checks the visible result. Build a small set of examples for important component states, then add behavior, visual, accessibility, and end-to-end checks according to the risks each component presents. Keep those examples useful to consumers by documenting purpose, inputs, behavior, and accessibility expectations alongside them.

How do you test UI components?

Test from the user’s point of view: define the component’s initial props and state, perform a meaningful action, and assert what changes on screen. A test that only confirms a component renders does not establish that its important behavior works.

Storybook provides one concrete way to organize this workflow. A story captures a component in a named state; a play function can interact with that rendered state, and Storybook’s test runner can execute those interaction checks from the command line or in CI. Storybook describes the purpose of component tests this way: “Component tests allow you to verify these functional aspects of UIs.” Storybook: Component tests.

  1. Set up a named state. Supply the props, fixture data, and relevant environmental assumptions needed to render the component.
  2. Perform a user action. Click, type, submit, or select using accessible, user-facing controls rather than relying on implementation details.
  3. Check the outcome. Assert the visible result and, where it matters, a callback or state effect that represents the expected behavior.
  4. Run the check repeatedly. Use the test runner locally and in CI so a regression is visible before merge.

What should I test in a UI component?

Inventory states that alter what a user can see or do. Not every component needs every state; choose the ones its behavior and risk make meaningful. Make each important state reproducible in a test or example, rather than relying on an undocumented manual setup.

State to consider What to make clear
Default or ordinary The usual appearance and available actions, with representative props and data.
Empty What appears when there is no content or no result.
Loading What users see while work is in progress, including any disabled or pending action.
Disabled Which action is unavailable and how that state is conveyed.
Validation error The error message, its association with the relevant field, and the user’s next step.
Success The visible confirmation after a successful action.
Boundary conditions Relevant limits or unusual inputs, such as long text or a maximum selection count.

Use this inventory to decide what deserves a test, not as a rule to create every possible combination. Favor states that are user-visible, likely to regress, or consequential when broken.

How do I test component interactions?

Start with a clear initial state, exercise a realistic sequence, and assert the outcome a user would notice. For a form, for example, a useful flow might begin with an empty required field, submit the form, and verify that an error appears and is associated with that field. A separate story can show the valid state and the successful submission result.

In Storybook, the story supplies the starting configuration and its play function can exercise the interaction. Prefer selectors and assertions tied to accessible names, roles, labels, or visible text. This makes the check easier to understand as a user-facing expectation and less dependent on internal markup. Storybook’s component-testing guidance explains the story-and-interaction approach and test-runner workflow at its component tests documentation.

When should I add visual regression checks?

Use visual comparison for components where appearance matters: layout, typography, color, spacing, or the composition of several elements. A visual test compares a rendered example with a known-good baseline and flags differences for review. A difference is evidence to inspect, not automatically a defect; an intentional design change should be reviewed and its baseline updated deliberately.

Storybook documents cross-browser visual testing through Chromatic and describes stories as individual visual tests. Its guidance on combining test types is at How to test UIs with Storybook. The documentation is a vendor account of its workflow, not an independent comparative benchmark of testing tools.

How do I test accessibility in Storybook?

Storybook’s accessibility addon audits the rendered DOM using axe-core and WCAG-related heuristics. It can report violations, passes, and incomplete cases. Configure results to appear as warnings or to fail checks in the UI, CLI, or CI, depending on the workflow you need. See Storybook: Accessibility tests.

Automated results are a useful filter, not proof that a component is accessible. Incomplete results need human judgment; asynchronous content can be checked before its final render, and browser versions or configuration can affect results. Supplement automated checks with keyboard operation and, where appropriate, assistive-technology review. WCAG is the W3C standard for accessibility guidance: W3C: WCAG 2 Overview.

Storybook’s accessibility documentation attributes to axe-core/Deque the claim that it catches “up to 57% of WCAG issues,” but the page does not give a study, denominator, or publication year. Do not treat that figure as a dated independent estimate of coverage.

Which level of automation should I use?

Different checks answer different questions. Choose the least costly check that gives credible evidence for the risk, then add broader integration coverage where component behavior depends on the running application.

Method Useful for What it does not establish by itself
Component interaction checks Isolated states, actions, and visible outcomes. That the whole application or service integration works.
Visual comparisons Unintended changes in rendered appearance. That a difference is wrong; intentional changes need review.
Accessibility automation Rendered-DOM issues detectable by configured rules and heuristics. Complete accessibility or a substitute for manual checks.
End-to-end tests Flows that depend on the running application and its wider stack. Exhaustive coverage of all isolated component states.
Snapshots Reviewing changes to serialized output or markup. Whether a change is meaningful to a user or behavior is correct.

Storybook documents reusing stories in Playwright or Cypress end-to-end tests. It also notes that applying component tests broadly can create maintenance cost, and that other testing types may provide more coverage with less effort in some cases. Those are vendor-described trade-offs, not measured universal rankings. Evaluate browser fidelity versus a simulated DOM, framework and build compatibility, fixture control, debugging, CI reporting, accessibility configuration, visual review, and maintenance as your own requirements dictate. How do I document UI components?

Write documentation for the consumer who needs to select, configure, and use the component. Keep the written description aligned with the states and behaviors shown in its executable examples. Stories can serve both as visual documentation and as inputs to tests, reducing the distance between the example readers see and the behavior checks exercise.

  • Purpose: explain what the component does and when it is appropriate.
  • Minimal example: show the smallest useful configuration.
  • Important states: include relevant empty, loading, disabled, error, success, and boundary examples.
  • Inputs and events: document props, defaults, callbacks, dependencies, and any required data.
  • Interaction: explain available actions and their visible outcomes.
  • Accessibility: state relevant keyboard behavior, labels, and other expectations.
  • Limitations: identify cases that require verification in the integrated application.

Storybook’s documentation describes stories as a way to develop and test components in their states; use that capability where it fits your stack rather than assuming every project needs Storybook. How to test UIs with Storybook.

What commonly goes wrong?

  • A check passes without testing meaningful behavior: render a named state, perform an actual user action, and assert its visible result rather than only checking that markup exists.
  • A visual comparison reports a change: inspect whether it is an unintended regression or an intentional design update before changing the baseline.
  • An accessibility result is incomplete: review the case manually, check keyboard behavior, and consider assistive-technology behavior rather than treating an incomplete result as a pass.
  • An accessibility check runs too early: ensure asynchronous content has reached the state you intend to audit; Storybook notes that timing can affect rendered-DOM checks.
  • Accessibility output differs across environments: compare browser versions and configuration, which Storybook identifies as factors that can change results.
  • Maintenance grows as checks multiply: target meaningful, high-risk states and select the test type that answers the question instead of duplicating broad coverage in every layer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does every component need a story for every prop combination?

No. Represent meaningful states and combinations that affect user-visible behavior; exhaustive combinations can add maintenance without proportionate confidence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are automated accessibility checks enough to claim a component is accessible?

No. They detect some rendered-DOM issues, but incomplete cases and keyboard or assistive-technology behavior require human review.
