Signal integrity engineering is the work of ensuring that a signal remains usable as it travels through its complete electrical path: PCB traces and vias, component packages, connectors, cables, and test fixtures. The practical approach is to define the interface requirements first, design and model the interconnect, then measure the prototype and debug discrepancies. At high edge rates, interconnects behave as electrical systems—not ideal wires—and can introduce reflections, crosstalk, loss, jitter, and noise that reduce timing and voltage margin.
What signal integrity engineering examines
Signal integrity (SI) focuses on whether a transmitted signal reaches its receiver with adequate quality for the interface to work. That means considering the entire channel, including transitions between board layers, components, connectors, cables, and fixtures—not just the visible trace on a PCB. Tektronix describes impedance measurement as part of verifying hardware after prototype fabrication, while its serial-data primer covers time- and frequency-domain measurements used to assess links (Tektronix: TDR impedance measurements; Tektronix: serial-data compliance and validation).
- Reflections arise when an interconnect changes impedance, sending some of a signal back toward its source.
- Crosstalk occurs when energy couples between nearby signal paths.
- Attenuation reduces signal amplitude as it travels through the channel.
- Jitter and noise affect the timing and voltage at which the receiver must distinguish data.
The system-level consequences include smaller eye openings and reduced timing or voltage margin. Which effects matter most depends on the interface, channel, and receiver; there is no useful universal layout rule independent of those conditions.
How to plan an SI workflow
Start from the interface and its acceptance criteria, then move from design predictions to measurements of the built hardware. The stages below keep layout decisions, models, and lab results tied to the same requirements.

- Set the interface requirements. Identify the signaling standard, topology, data rate and edge behavior, permitted loss and jitter, receiver equalization assumptions, and required compliance measurements. Use the governing interface specification and product requirements for limits; generic numerical layout guidance cannot substitute for them.
- Define the interconnect with the fabricator. Agree on the PCB stackup and controlled-impedance requirements. Plan for a continuous return path, transitions at vias and component launches, coupling between routes, and length mismatch where the interface requires control.
- Model and simulate. Use electrical models appropriate to the components and interconnects. Inspect time-domain behavior and frequency-dependent loss, and check that model boundaries and assumptions represent the intended channel.
- Measure the prototype. Compare measured behavior with the design targets and model. Choose measurements that answer the actual question: impedance profile, eye behavior, jitter, or frequency-domain channel characteristics.
- Debug and iterate. Use the measurement evidence to locate or characterize likely problems, while accounting for the test setup. Update the design or model and repeat the relevant checks.
Simulation helps identify risk before fabrication, but it does not prove that the physical board matches the model. Prototype measurement checks the implementation; discrepancies can reflect either a design issue or inaccurate model assumptions.
Where controlled impedance and standards fit
Controlled impedance is a design and fabrication concern: the trace geometry and surrounding board structure are chosen with the stackup so the interconnect has the intended electrical behavior. The target and tolerances must come from the relevant interface and product requirements, then be coordinated with the PCB fabricator. A number chosen without the stackup and interface context is not a complete design rule.

IPC’s standards catalogue lists IPC-2141 for controlled-impedance circuit boards and high-speed logic design and IPC-2251 as a guide for packaging high-speed electronic circuits. IPC also maintains a board-design standards listing. Check the current edition and consult the actual standard before relying on clause-level requirements; a catalogue entry alone does not establish a specific design limit.
Standards also matter in measurement. The IEEE Standards Association’s published description of IEEE 370-2020 addresses electrical characterization of PCBs and related interconnects, including fixture design and practices for measured-data quality. Its stated scope reaches frequencies up to 50 GHz, and its techniques are validated to 50 GHz. The standard is relevant when measurement consistency and fixture effects are important; it does not replace the limits of the interface being validated.

How TDR reveals impedance changes
Time-domain reflectometry (TDR) sends a fast step into a device under test (DUT) and observes the waveform reflected back. A change in reflection indicates a change in impedance. If the propagation delay through the interconnect is known and the measurement has adequate resolution, the response can be related to a location along the path. Keysight describes using the reflected signal to derive impedance versus time or distance and identify discontinuities (Keysight: How to Characterize TDR Impedance).
Read the direction of the reflection
- A feature with impedance higher than the reference tends to produce a positive reflection.
- A feature with impedance lower than the reference tends to produce a negative reflection.
- Real structures can have combined inductive and capacitive behavior, so the measured waveform may not be a simple signature of one isolated feature.
Use TDR as a locating aid, not a complete diagnosis
The edge speed, calibration, reference plane, and instrument resolution affect what the trace can reveal. A response is useful only in relation to where the measurement begins and what lies between that point and the DUT. For example, a connector, launch, or fixture may contribute a discontinuity before the signal reaches the board section under investigation. Establish the reference plane and account for intervening structures before assigning a feature to a physical location.

Choose measurements to answer the question
No single plot describes every aspect of a channel. Use the view that matches the failure mode or design decision, and interpret results against the relevant protocol requirements.
- TDR or TDT: Examine impedance variation and the timing of reflections along an interconnect.
- Eye and jitter measurements: Assess signal quality and timing behavior under the required operating and compliance conditions.
- S-parameter analysis: Examine frequency-dependent channel behavior, including insertion loss, return loss, and crosstalk across the relevant range.
Serial-link validation may require both time-domain and frequency-domain views. Where fixtures influence the result, use an appropriate fixture-removal or de-embedding workflow and document the reference planes. IEEE 370-2020’s published scope specifically addresses fixture design and consistent measurement practices, while Tektronix’s serial-data primer discusses compliance and validation measurements.

Keep the measurement setup from becoming the result
Before treating a trace or channel measurement as a property of the DUT, account for the equipment and setup between the instrument and the structure being evaluated. Cables, probes, adapters, fixtures, calibration, and reference-plane placement can all affect what is measured. A setup that is poorly characterized can make a sound interconnect appear faulty—or conceal a real problem.
A TDR-capable sampling oscilloscope may be part of the measurement setup, along with TDR/TDT accessories, suitable fixtures, and analysis software. Select equipment based on the interface and required bandwidth, edge fidelity, access to the DUT, and the calibration and reference-plane workflow. The instrument category alone does not ensure that a measurement is valid; the setup must fit the question and the protocol requirements.
Compare designs or instruments on relevant axes
When choosing between actual channel designs or measurement setups, compare them under the same defined conditions. These are evaluation dimensions, not universal pass/fail thresholds:
- Fit to the interface, topology, and receiver assumptions.
- Insertion loss, return loss, and crosstalk over the frequency range that matters.
- Impedance behavior and the location and severity of discontinuities.
- Eye height and width, jitter, and noise margin under the required conditions.
- Measurement bandwidth and edge fidelity, plus calibration, fixtures, and de-embedding capability.
- Cost, availability, and the fabricator’s ability to build the intended stackup and geometry.
Use the governing interface specification and product requirements to decide what passes. Comparing a single impedance figure, an instrument bandwidth, or a simulated eye without the associated conditions can obscure the behavior that determines whether the link works.
