A PSA 10 copy of the 2015 Japanese XY Promo Art Academy Fujishima Pikachu—better known as “Raincoat Pikachu”—sold at Fanatics Collect for $8.4 million including buyer’s premium. The auction record lists 64 bids and a sale date of September 28, 2026. That extraordinary total is not an established market value for other copies: reported sales of the same card were far lower, and available reporting does not explain the jump.
What sold for $8.4 million?
The lot was titled “2015 Pokemon Japanese XY Promo Art Academy Fujishima Pikachu #XY-P PSA 10 GEM MINT.” Fanatics Collect’s lot record lists a $8,400,000 sale with buyer’s premium, 64 bids, and PSA certification number 24753376. The listing says it was flash inserted on September 16 into the 245th Weekly Sunday Auction, which closed the evening of September 27; the record gives September 28 as the sale date. Fanatics Collect’s auction record is the primary source for those lot details.
The $8.4 million figure is the buyer-inclusive total, not the winning bid before fees. Polkastarter reported a $7 million winning bid before the buyer’s premium. Polkastarter’s report, like the lot record, distinguishes the bid from the final total.

The card grew out of an illustration competition connected to Pokémon Art Academy, a Nintendo 3DS game. In a November 28, 2014 announcement, Famitsu described a collaboration between the game and the Pokémon Card Game: one category invited Dress-Up Pikachu illustrations, while another welcomed entries featuring any favorite Pokémon. Selected illustrations would be made into cards and awarded as prizes. That announcement establishes the contest format, but not the final print quantity of this specific card.

- Pokémon TCG: Mega Evolution—Pitch Black Booster Bundle contains six booster packs from Pokémon TCG: Mega Evolution—Pitch Black.
- This is a great option for getting into the new Choas Rising expansion.
- A great gift for the Pokémon collector or player in your life.
Later coverage identifies Y. Fujishima as the Dress-Up Pikachu winner and says the prize included 100 copies of the custom card. That quantity comes from subsequent reporting, including Creative Bloq and Kotaku, rather than the initial contest announcement. Creative Bloq describes the design as Pikachu wearing a red raincoat beneath an umbrella—the source of the “Raincoat Pikachu” nickname.
This was a contest-prize card, not an ordinary card pulled from a retail booster pack. Its limited distribution helps explain collector interest, but scarcity alone does not establish why this particular copy attracted an $8.4 million total.

How does the price compare with earlier sales?
Reported sales for PSA 10 copies of Raincoat Pikachu were much lower in the periods before this auction. Kotaku reported two 2025 sales at $16,100 and $26,100, a June 2026 result of $156,250, and an August 2026 result of $79,999.99. These are reported auction outcomes, not a consistent price series or a guarantee of what another copy would sell for. Kotaku’s account provides the dated comparisons.

The Fanatics lot page’s population field says 56. Kotaku reported that PSA listed 57 copies as Gem Mint PSA 10. Those are different figures from different sources; the available reporting does not reconcile them. PSA 10 describes the grade of the auctioned copy, but neither the grade nor a population count by itself explains the sale price.

For a dated point of comparison, Guinness World Records reported in March 2026 that a Pikachu Illustrator PSA Gem Mint 10 sold through Goldin Auctions for $16,492,000 on February 16, 2026, calling it the most expensive Pokémon trading card sold at auction at that time. Guinness World Records’ report describes that earlier result; any ranking should be read with its date, since later auctions can change it.

The available sources do not establish a reason for the gap between this result and earlier reported sales. Kotaku reporter John Walker observed, “There’s no meaningful difference between these slabs and the one sold two days ago on auction site Fanatics Collect.” That is Walker’s observation, not an independent technical finding about the copies. Kotaku also reported that it asked Fanatics whether it had concerns or an explanation. Polkastarter said on October 1, 2026, that the buyer and seller had not been announced and Fanatics had not commented. Kotaku and Polkastarter report that context.

Without a verified explanation, it would be speculation to attribute the result to manipulation, fraud, or a broad change in the card’s market value. The auction record establishes what this lot sold for; it does not show what another copy would fetch, or why bidders pushed this one to that total. As Polkastarter put it, “One record sale is a data point, not a price guide.”
