For DMARC to pass, a message needs at least one passing SPF or DKIM identity that aligns with the domain in its visible From address. A Node.js app can add a DKIM signature, but it cannot, by that act alone, publish DNS records, authorize a sender with SPF, align a provider’s bounce domain, or determine whether a receiving server accepts the message.
Here, “tenant” means the organization or provider sending mail for a domain. SPF, DKIM, and DMARC define domain identities and alignment; they do not define a universal Node.js tenant-alignment feature.
What DMARC aligns
DMARC compares the domain in the message’s RFC 5322 From field—the Author Domain—with authenticated domain identities. It passes when at least one supported mechanism both authenticates and aligns: SPF for the SMTP MAIL FROM identity, or DKIM for a validated signature’s d= signing domain. A plain SPF pass or a valid DKIM signature from an unrelated domain is not enough by itself.
- SPF domain: SPF can evaluate an SMTP
MAIL FROMor HELO/EHLO identity. For DMARC’s SPF check, the relevant identity isMAIL FROM; a pass for HELO alone does not establish SPF alignment. - DKIM signing domain: The domain named in the valid DKIM signature’s
d=tag. - Author Domain: The domain from the visible
Fromfield, not necessarily the SMTP envelope sender or the domain of the system that transmitted the message.
RFC 9989 is the current DMARC specification identified here; it obsoletes RFC 7489 and RFC 9091. RFC 7208 defines SPF, and RFC 6376 defines DKIM. The distinction matters because older DMARC guides may rely on RFC 7489 wording or behavior.

Relaxed and strict alignment
DMARC has separate alignment choices for SPF and DKIM. Relaxed alignment compares Organizational Domains; strict alignment requires the authenticated domain to be identical to the Author Domain. An organization can choose differently for SPF and DKIM rather than treating alignment as one global setting.
| Mode | What matches | Example when the From domain is example.com |
Operational effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Relaxed | The authenticated domain and Author Domain share an Organizational Domain. | A related subdomain such as mail.example.com can align with example.com. |
Allows related subdomains to authenticate mail for the parent domain. A provider-specific domain unrelated to the organization’s domain will not align merely because the organization uses that provider. |
| Strict | The authenticated domain is identical to the Author Domain. | example.com aligns; mail.example.com does not. |
Requires closer identity matching and can require more precise configuration across subdomains and sending services. |
Organizational Domain is a standards-defined domain relationship, not a simple “same text after the last dot” rule. Choose strictness based on the identities your legitimate senders can use and the alignment you intend to require; neither mode is universally best.

What Node.js controls—and what it does not
| Part | Role | Where it is configured |
|---|---|---|
| Node.js DKIM signing | Adds a cryptographic signature associated with a signing domain and covered message content. | In the mail library or sending integration, using a private key and selector. |
| DKIM public key | Lets receivers retrieve the public key used to validate a signature. | DNS for the signing domain and selector. |
| SPF | Authorizes sending hosts for an SPF identity. | A DNS TXT record and the sending system’s actual SMTP identity and route. |
| DMARC | States the domain’s handling preference and can request reports; receivers evaluate authentication and alignment. | A DNS TXT record at _dmarc.<domain>. |
Nodemailer supports DKIM signing through transporter-level configuration or per-message dkim configuration; message-level settings take precedence. The exact API and behavior can change, so check the Nodemailer documentation for the version in your application. A simplified transporter configuration has this shape:
const transporter = nodemailer.createTransport({
// SMTP or provider transport settings go here
dkim: {
domainName: "example.com",
keySelector: "mail2026",
privateKey: process.env.DKIM_PRIVATE_KEY
}
});
This example illustrates where signing settings fit; it is not a complete SMTP setup. Use a selector whose public key is published in DNS for the signing domain, and ensure the generated signature’s d= value is the intended domain. Protect the private key as a secret and do not commit it to source control. If a provider modifies signed headers or the body after signing, signature verification can fail; account for that behavior in the signing setup.

Calling the signing function does not publish the selector’s DNS key or an SPF/DMARC record, and it does not control the SMTP MAIL FROM identity used by every provider. It also does not guarantee inbox placement, encrypt a message, prove a human author’s identity, or authenticate the local part of an email address. DKIM verifies a domain association and signed content; RFC 6376 explicitly does not define it as encryption.
How to roll out alignment for a Node.js sender
- Inventory sending sources. For each system that sends mail for the domain—including the Node.js application and any third-party services—record the visible
Fromdomain, actual SMTPMAIL FROMdomain, and DKIMd=domain. Include transactional, marketing, support, and other legitimate streams if they exist. - Check SPF authorization and identity. Confirm the SPF TXT record authorizes the actual sending source, then determine which
MAIL FROMidentity the message uses. Compare that identity with the Author Domain under the chosen SPF alignment mode. SPF records are DNS TXT records under RFC 7208; a record for one identity does not automatically demonstrate that a different envelope identity is aligned. - Configure DKIM signing and publication. Choose the signing domain and selector, configure the Node.js library or provider to sign with the corresponding private key, and publish the matching public key in DNS for that selector. Verify that the signature’s
d=domain aligns with the visible From-domain at the intended strictness. - Publish a DMARC record. Put a TXT record at
_dmarc.<Author-Domain>. For example, a monitoring-oriented starting record could bev=DMARC1; p=none; rua=mailto:dmarc-reports@example.comat_dmarc.example.com. Replace the example domain and report mailbox with ones you control.p=nonerequests monitoring rather than a reject or quarantine disposition; a report address is useful only if you have a process to receive and analyze the reports. - Review results before tightening policy. Use aggregate reports and message authentication results to identify each legitimate source, its SPF and DKIM outcomes, and whether either passing identity aligns. Investigate failures and third-party configurations before moving to a stricter policy. RFC 9989 states: “Proper consumption and analysis of DMARC aggregate reports are essential to any successful DMARC deployment for a Domain Owner.”
This is a practical rollout sequence, not a guarantee of deliverability. DNS publication and propagation, provider behavior, receiver policy, forwarding, and mailing-list changes can all affect observed results.

- SPF passed, but DMARC did not: Was SPF evaluated successfully for
MAIL FROM, or only for HELO/EHLO? IfMAIL FROMpassed, does its domain align with the visible From-domain? - DKIM passed, but DMARC did not: Which
d=domain signed the message, and does it align? A valid signature from a provider’s unrelated domain may authenticate that provider’s signature without aligning to your Author Domain. - Both mechanisms appear to pass, but DMARC failed: Confirm that at least one passing identity aligns, and check that the DMARC record was discovered for the domain in the message’s
Fromfield. - DKIM verification failed: Check that the selector in the signature resolves to the intended public key, that the corresponding private key was used, and whether a provider or mailing list changed signed headers or body content after signing.
- A legitimate source is missing or failing: Compare the report’s source and identities with the sender inventory. Confirm that the source is included in SPF where appropriate and is configured to use an aligned DKIM domain; do not assume every failure is spoofing.
