Researchers reported a strongly anisotropic, “fortune teller”-like massless fermion state in a surface layer of silicon. This is a finding about how electrons behave in a material—not the discovery of a new fundamental particle. Its key distinction from the better-known Dirac fermions is the shape of the electronic structure: planes rather than cones.
What does “massless fermion” mean here?
In this study, “massless fermion” describes an electronic state in a solid whose behavior resembles that of a massless particle. It does not mean scientists found a new elementary particle outside the material. The reported states occur in a surface layer of silicon, where electrons’ allowed energies and momentum form a distinctive electronic structure.
The term “fortune teller” is a visual description of the unusual, strongly direction-dependent shape of these states. The authors’ abstract contrasts that geometry with the cone-shaped electronic structures associated with Dirac fermions.

| Feature | Reported fortune-teller-like state | Dirac fermion context |
|---|---|---|
| Electronic-structure shape | Planes, according to the paper’s abstract | Cones, as described in the paper’s comparison |
| Directional behavior | Strongly anisotropic: behavior depends strongly on direction | Presented as the contrasting, isotropic case |
| Where the reported state occurs | A surface layer of silicon | Used as scientific context; this study does not report a new Dirac-fermion material |
The publisher’s abstract describes the states qualitatively; the accessible record does not give a numerical measure of their anisotropy. The distinction is therefore about the reported geometry and directional character, not a quantified performance comparison.

What did the silicon study establish?
The researchers report that the distinct electronic structures exist in a surface layer of silicon. In the Royal Society of Chemistry abstract, the authors write: “Here, we demonstrate that such distinct electronic structures exist and can be found in a surface layer of silicon.”
The result is a materials-physics finding. The abstract does not establish a finished device, a commercial application, or a measured performance advantage. Chemistry World raised graphene-like materials with new properties as a possible research implication, not as a demonstrated outcome.

Who published the finding, and when?
The research communication, “Experimental evidence of a new class of massless fermions,” is by Marek Kopciuszyński, Mariusz Krawiec, Lucyna Żurawek, and Ryszard Zdyb of the Institute of Physics at Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin, Poland. The Royal Society of Chemistry lists its first publication date as 11 December 2019. It appeared in Nanoscale Horizons in 2020, volume 5, pages 679–682, DOI 10.1039/C9NH00681H. The accessible publisher record and news coverage do not provide enough detail to describe the measurement setup, numerical results, or robustness of the analysis. Those specifics should not be inferred from the abstract alone. For the report’s broader context, Hannah Kerr’s February 5, 2020, Chemistry World article discusses the potential implications: A new class of massless fermion.
