A small embedded application may need no operating-system kernel at all: a loop, perhaps with short interrupt service routines (ISRs), can be enough. If the work needs clearer separation or more flexible scheduling, a run-to-completion scheduler can provide a simple next step. Its “one-line” core is a scheduler demonstration, not a complete kernel.
When does an embedded application need multitasking?
On a single-CPU microcontroller, tasks do not literally execute at the same instant. A scheduler manages how the processor’s time is shared, creating the appearance that separate activities are progressing together. The right structure depends on what the application must do, not on whether multitasking sounds more advanced.
One repeating loop
The simplest design runs a sequence of operations inside an infinite loop. It is easy to understand, but the operations are coupled: adding work can change how quickly existing work runs, and a function that waits indefinitely can prevent the rest of the loop from running.
A loop with interrupt service routines
An ISR can respond to an external event while the main loop continues to handle ordinary processing. A common division is to keep the interrupt handler short and use it to capture or flag data for the main loop to process later. This can make an application more responsive without introducing a task scheduler, but interrupts add constraints and complexity of their own.

Separate scheduled tasks
A scheduler becomes useful when the application benefits from treating activities as distinct tasks and choosing when each gets processor time. More scheduling flexibility can help as requirements grow, but it also creates more design decisions. A scheduler is not automatically an improvement over a loop and ISRs.
How the near-one-line scheduler works
Colin Walls describes the limit carefully: “You cannot write a real kernel in one line of code, of course, but the core of a run-to-completion scheduler is close:” The compact C example defines a task count and an array of task-function pointers, then repeatedly calls every task in sequence:

This loop is the scheduler’s central idea: visit each task and let it run until it returns. It needs no assembly for this run-to-completion approach. The brevity is illustrative; it does not supply all the facilities or behavior of a complete real-time operating system.
What run-to-completion requires from tasks
Each task must cooperate by finishing promptly and returning control. If one task blocks indefinitely, later tasks do not get called. The scheduler cannot move on until the current function returns.

On its next turn, a task function is called from its beginning. If it needs to continue work across calls, it must preserve its progress itself—for example, in state that lives beyond a single invocation—and use that state to decide what to do next. This is a different model from a task that pauses midway and later resumes at the same instruction.
How other scheduling approaches differ
| Approach | How control moves | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Single infinite loop | The program repeats a sequence of operations. | Very simple, but one operation can hold up the rest and the design may be difficult to scale. |
| Loop plus ISRs | The loop performs ordinary work; short interrupt handlers respond to events and can leave data for later processing. | More responsive and flexible than a loop alone, with additional interrupt-related constraints and complexity. |
| Run to completion | The scheduler calls each task; a task runs until it returns. | Simple, but tasks must cooperate and manage any state needed on a later call. |
| Round robin with context save and restore | A task pauses, its execution context is saved, and another task runs; the paused task can later resume where it stopped. | Supports mid-task pauses, but saving and restoring context is architecture-specific and adds implementation work, including assembly programming. |
| Time sliced | A timer interrupt triggers a switch that suspends one task and runs another. | Allocates processor time through scheduled slices, but preempts tasks and can be inflexible when the set of task slots changes. |
| Time sliced with background work | A low-priority background task uses time when normal work is asleep or yields its slot. | Can put otherwise spare time to use while retaining the fixed-slot constraints of time slicing. |
| Priority scheduling | The scheduler chooses the highest-priority ready task. It keeps running until it yields or a higher-priority task becomes ready. | More flexible than fixed slots, but task behavior and priorities need careful design. |
| Composite scheduling | Tasks sharing a priority level are scheduled by an additional rule, such as round robin or time slicing. | Accommodates shared priority levels by adding a second scheduling rule. |

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Cooperation: Can every task finish quickly and return control, or must it be able to pause while retaining its place?
- Preemption: Is it acceptable for a timer or higher-priority task to interrupt current work?
- Timing: Does the application need processor time allocated in slices, or is a simpler sequence of calls sufficient?
- Change: How likely is it that tasks or their timing needs will change? Fixed slots may be awkward when the task set changes; priorities introduce their own configuration choices.
- Services: Does application code need kernel facilities such as timing, inter-task communication, or memory allocation? A kernel’s value can include these interfaces and structure, not just its scheduling method.
If a loop and brief ISRs meet the requirements, a scheduler may add needless complexity. If distinct activities need a clear structure, run-to-completion scheduling is a small step up, provided its cooperative limits fit the work. Context switching, time slicing, and priorities are options when their specific capabilities are needed—not features that should be added by default.

A later third-party example presents a related task-loop algorithm on an Arduino Uno with an ATmega328P. That is one optional way to explore the concept; it is not a requirement of Walls’s original explanation. The example’s speed measurements apply to that author’s specific setup and should not be treated as general performance figures.

The practical lesson is to match the structure to the work. Begin with the simplest control flow that meets the application’s current needs and plausible changes ahead; add scheduling complexity when its benefits justify it.
