A 2025 study describes a laboratory-built capillary electrophoresis system that separated DNA fragments using laser-induced fluorescence. Its authors report that the assembled instrument cost no more than US$1,100 and could resolve selected DNA fragments in minutes. That makes it an interesting low-cost research prototype—not a confirmed commercial product or a field-ready diagnostic device.
What the system does
Capillary electrophoresis separates charged molecules as they move through a narrow capillary under an electric field. In the 2025 prototype, fluorescent dyes label DNA and a laser-induced fluorescence detector measures the signal. The study presents a flexible instrument for research, assembled from laboratory components rather than a ready-to-buy analyzer. 2025 study
What the study demonstrated
DNA fragment separation
The authors report baseline resolution of eight fragments from a 50 to 500 bp DNA ladder in 10 minutes under their stated experimental conditions. They also report separating PCR products for target genes from Porphyromonas gingivalis and Candida albicans. These are demonstrations with selected samples, not evidence of broad field performance or clinical diagnostic accuracy. Study performance results Study demonstrations

The paper reports a double-stranded DNA detection limit of 0.05 ng/μL and a working range of 0.05 to 10 ng/μL. For its repeatability measurements, it reports relative standard deviations of 5% to 6.2% for fluorescence intensity and less than 1.1% for migration time. Those figures describe the authors’ setup and protocol; they should not be assumed for other builds or workflows. Sensitivity results Repeatability results

What it cost—and what that number means
The authors say the assembled CE system cost no more than US$1,100. This is the study’s reported cost for its build, not a current quote for a reproducible kit or a complete estimate for every laboratory. The paper does not establish that the system is sold commercially. 2025 study
What went into the prototype
The construction list illustrates why this is a lab instrument rather than a pocket-sized consumer device. It includes a 505 nm laser diode, mini high-voltage power supply, fused-silica capillary, photomultiplier tube, data-acquisition card, optical filters, and a dark box. The experiments used a PCR thermal cycler for amplification, along with materials including TBE buffer, fluorescent DNA stains, hydroxyethyl cellulose, DNA polymerase, and a 50 bp DNA ladder. How it compares with existing instruments
Commercial instruments provide a useful point of context, but their specifications and workflows are not directly comparable to a research-built prototype. For example, BiOptic describes its Qsep1-Lite as a portable DNA/RNA bio-fragment analyzer. The vendor lists capacity of 1 to 8 samples, 2 to 7 minutes per sample for fragments below 1 kb, and resolution of 2 to 4 bp below 500 bp. These are vendor specifications, not results from the 2025 study. BiOptic Qsep1-Lite specifications
Promega describes Spectrum Compact as a benchtop capillary electrophoresis instrument for Sanger sequencing and fragment analysis, with single-base resolution and compatible sequencing and STR workflows. Promega says it is not for medical diagnostic use. It is a different system and should not be treated as a direct counterpart to the low-cost prototype. Promega Spectrum Compact

A meaningful comparison would need to account for portability and power, sample throughput, fragment-size range and resolution, detection sensitivity, preparation and hands-on work, reagent or cartridge requirements, and documented workflow or regulatory use. The available figures do not support a like-for-like price comparison between the study prototype and these commercial instruments.

A 2008 conference paper described a portable human DNA analysis prototype housed in an attaché case. Its system combined microfabricated capillary electrophoresis, a disposable layered elastomer chip, high-speed micro-PCR, and analysis software. The authors reported 25 minutes for DNA extraction, PCR, and microchannel electrophoresis, and said commercialization was planned after field testing. That historical plan does not establish that the device later reached the market. 2008 portable DNA analysis paper

What the results do—and don’t—show
- They show: a research group assembled a CE-LIF system and reported separation and detection results for DNA under specified laboratory conditions.
- They do not show: that the instrument is commercially available, independently validated, suitable for field deployment, or proven for clinical diagnosis.
- They do not establish: an all-in cost for other laboratories, or a directly comparable price and workflow against commercial analyzers.
