If an older PC is no longer supported by Windows 10, antiX Linux is a credible lightweight, non-Ubuntu option to try. It is based on Debian Stable, offers 32-bit and 64-bit images, and can run from a USB drive so you can check basic hardware before installing. Those facts make antiX a candidate—not proof that it will make an unidentified PC fast or that every device will work.
What “Microsoft gave up” means—and what it doesn’t
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says the PC will still work, but after that date Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. The end of support is not the same as the computer becoming unusable. Microsoft’s Windows 10 end-of-support page explains the distinction.
Whether a newer Windows version can be installed depends on the PC’s hardware and Microsoft’s requirements; the title alone does not identify the machine or why it was left behind. Linux is one possible way to keep using older hardware, but there is no basis here to promise a successful revival or quantify how many PCs Linux can bring back.
Why antiX is a plausible lightweight, non-Ubuntu choice
antiX is based on Debian Stable, not Ubuntu, and is designed for Intel/AMD x86-compatible systems. The project lists 512 MB of RAM as its recommended minimum and 7.0 GB as the minimum hard-drive size for an installation. These are antiX’s published figures, not a guarantee of comfortable performance with modern websites or applications. See the antiX About page for the project’s description and requirements.

The current download page lists antiX-26.1, released September 29, 2026, in both 32-bit and 64-bit builds. It lists the full image at approximately 2.2 GB and the core image at approximately 660 MB. The page also cautions that some software is no longer available in 32-bit versions. Choose an image that matches the processor architecture, and consider whether the applications you need support it. Details are on the antiX download page.
How antiX compares with two other non-Ubuntu options
| Distribution | What the cited project information establishes | What to check on your PC |
|---|---|---|
| antiX | Debian Stable-based; 32-bit and 64-bit images; project-published minimums of 512 MB RAM recommended and 7.0 GB installation storage. | Processor architecture, available memory and storage, device compatibility in a live session, and whether the selected image includes what you need. |
| MX Linux | Official editions include Xfce, KDE, and Fluxbox. | Whether its desktop fits your hardware and whether UEFI or Secure Boot requires extra setup. See the MX Linux FAQ on UEFI and Secure Boot. |
| Linux Mint Xfce | Mint offers Xfce as one of its desktop editions. The release listing shows Linux Mint 22.3 supported through April 2029. | Mint is 64-bit only from version 20 onward, so it is not an option for a 32-bit-only PC. Confirm current release details on the Linux Mint releases page. |
Linux Mint’s guide describes differences among Cinnamon, MATE, and Xfce in features, performance, menus, panels, and configuration tools. A lighter desktop may reduce overhead, but neither a desktop’s name nor a published minimum predicts how a particular PC will handle your workload. Mint’s edition guide explains the choices.

Test from USB before replacing Windows
antiX documents running a live session from USB. Use that opportunity to check the parts of the computer you actually rely on before changing its installed operating system. A successful boot alone does not establish that every device or use case will work.
Recommended Free Tools
- Check the machine first. Record its processor architecture, RAM, available storage, and whether its firmware uses UEFI. These details determine which image and installation approach are plausible.
- Choose the matching antiX image. Download the 32-bit or 64-bit build from the official download page. The full and core images differ in size; choose with your needs and available download capacity in mind.
- Boot a live USB session. Follow antiX’s USB instructions and use the PC’s manufacturer documentation for its boot menu or firmware settings; the key varies by computer.
- Check essential hardware and tasks. Test Wi-Fi or wired networking, audio, graphics, and any peripherals you need. Try the applications and websites that matter to you. A live check can reveal basic compatibility issues, but cannot guarantee every feature or performance level.
- Back up personal files before installing. Replacing or repartitioning an operating system can erase data. Do not treat a live USB as a backup or data-recovery plan.
Account for UEFI and Secure Boot
Installation can take extra work on PCs that came with Windows 8 or later. MX Linux notes that UEFI and Secure Boot may require special handling and that the way to disable Secure Boot varies by manufacturer. Consult the computer maker’s instructions rather than relying on a universal key sequence. See the MX Linux UEFI and Secure Boot guidance. MX Linux also documents a frugal-install approach that can coexist with another system; it is an option to investigate, not a promise that it suits every PC. MX Linux’s frugal-install guide describes that method.

When antiX is—and isn’t—the right first try
- Try antiX first if the PC may be 32-bit, has limited memory, or you want a Debian-based lightweight system with a live USB option.
- Consider MX Linux if you prefer one of its official Xfce, KDE, or Fluxbox editions and are prepared to check firmware compatibility.
- Consider Linux Mint Xfce if the PC is 64-bit capable and you prefer Mint’s desktop choices; check the current release listing before downloading.
- Pause before installing if the live session cannot connect you to the internet, drive the display, play audio, or operate a device essential to your work.
Microsoft lists Windows 10’s basic RAM requirement as 1 GB for 32-bit or 2 GB for 64-bit, and says newer Windows 10 versions require a disk of 32 GB or larger. Those Windows figures do not establish that Linux will run better on the same PC; compare the actual machine’s architecture and resources with the chosen distribution’s requirements, then judge using the live session.
