If you want a more focused editor without giving up substantial Java tooling, use a VS Code-based editor with JetBrains’ Java and Kotlin by IntelliJ IDEA extension. It documents project import, completion, inspections, refactoring, formatting, navigation, and run/debug support. For individual Java files rather than a full project, Microsoft’s Java extensions also offer a lightweight mode—but it omits important IDE functions such as dependency resolution, building, and debugging.

Choose based on whether you work on files or projects

VS Code is a general editor whose Java support comes from extensions. The key distinction is not simply “lightweight versus full IDE”; it is whether you need source-file editing or a project-aware Java workflow.

Workflow What it is suited to Important limitation
Microsoft Java extensions, lightweight mode Editing individual Java source files or working without full project context Does not resolve imported dependencies or build the project, and does not support running, debugging, refactoring, linting, or semantic-error detection. Microsoft’s project documentation
Microsoft Java extensions, standard mode Full-scale Java project work with project context Uses the Java extension workflow to build the workspace and resolve project context. Microsoft’s project documentation
JetBrains Java and Kotlin by IntelliJ IDEA Bringing IntelliJ-powered Java and Kotlin assistance into VS Code, Cursor, and other VS Code-based editors Project import and the documented language features depend on detecting and importing a supported project. JetBrains documentation

Microsoft describes completion, refactoring, linting, formatting, debugging, and unit-test support through its Java extension ecosystem. The feature list is useful, but lightweight mode is not the mode for those full-project operations. See Microsoft’s Java overview and project-mode documentation.

Option 1: Use Microsoft’s Java extensions

For individual files

Install the Extension Pack for Java, then use lightweight mode when your task is limited to source-file editing. This is the more modest setup when you do not need project dependency resolution or IDE actions. Do not expect it to act as a full Java IDE: lightweight mode cannot build or run the project and does not provide the project features listed in the comparison.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For a full project

For Maven, Gradle, or another project workflow, use standard mode so the Java extensions can build the workspace and resolve project context. This is the appropriate choice if you need project-aware assistance and operations such as running, debugging, refactoring, linting, or semantic-error detection. Microsoft’s Java documentation describes the extension ecosystem’s broader editing and debugging capabilities.

Option 2: Add IntelliJ-powered Java support to a VS Code-based editor

Install JetBrains’ Java and Kotlin by IntelliJ IDEA extension in a supported VS Code-based editor. JetBrains documents support for importing Maven, Gradle, and Bazel projects, plus completion and signature help, inspections, quick-fixes, refactorings, formatting, navigation, and run/debug. Its description is specifically about bringing IntelliJ IDEA support to VS Code-based editors; it is evidence of substantial feature overlap, not proof that every IntelliJ workflow is identical. See the extension overview.

  1. Install the extension using JetBrains’ setup documentation. Confirm current availability, supported editor versions, and licensing there, since those operational details can change.

  2. Open the project directory containing its supported build file. JetBrains says the extension initially integrates without loading project modules; it begins project import after detecting a supported build file.

Which setup should you pick?

  • Choose Microsoft lightweight mode if you mainly open and edit individual .java files and can do without project builds, dependency resolution, and IDE actions.
  • Choose Microsoft standard mode if you want a conventional VS Code Java project workflow with project context and the Java extension ecosystem’s editing, test, and debugging support.
  • Try JetBrains’ extension if IntelliJ-style Java assistance is the priority and your project uses a documented import path such as Maven, Gradle, or Bazel.

The cited official documentation does not establish which setup uses less memory, starts faster, or matches every IntelliJ feature. Those comparisons should not be assumed from feature lists alone. For a broader description of IntelliJ IDEA itself, see JetBrains’ IntelliJ IDEA overview.
