Even when a process ends, whether your work survives depends on what the app saved before that happened.
Here are seven distinct events often compressed into “the app stopped.” Their exact effects depend on the operating system, browser, app design, and power settings.
What happens when I close the lid?
The operating system applies the laptop’s configured lid and power behavior. Depending on the device and its settings, closing the lid may put the device to sleep—or it may take another action. It is not a universal command to quit and relaunch every app.
On Windows, Microsoft notes that Modern Standby can suspend user-mode processes when the device sleeps. That is a device-level power transition, not proof that an app was shut down and freshly launched. Check your own device’s lid policy rather than assuming every laptop behaves alike. Microsoft’s Windows App SDK desktop app lifecycle guidance also distinguishes desktop apps from the UWP process-lifecycle model.

Seven different ways an app can stop
These cases are useful distinctions, not a universal platform taxonomy. Some affect the whole device; others affect an app or browser page. A pause is not an exit, and an exit does not tell you whether unsaved work was preserved.
| Event | What is affected | What happens to execution | What happens to state |
|---|---|---|---|
| Device sleeps after lid close | The device and its processes | Power policy may suspend processes; not necessarily a quit or relaunch. | Volatile state may remain while suspended, but unsaved data is not made durable by sleep. |
| App moves to background | The app | It may run briefly in the background before suspension. | The app should save important user data during the transition. |
| App is suspended | The app process | Execution pauses; the process may later resume or be terminated. | In-memory state may persist only while the process survives; durable saved data remains available. |
| Browser page is frozen | The page | Browser pauses page execution; lifecycle events can include freeze and resume. |
In-memory JavaScript state is vulnerable if the page is later discarded. |
| Page or app is discarded or terminated | The page or app process | The old process does not survive; reopening requires launch or reconstruction. | Unsaved volatile state may be lost; already-persisted data can be restored by the app. |
| User quits the app | The app process | An orderly quit can give the app an opportunity to save and clean up, if implemented. | Unsaved documents need explicit handling; a quit request alone does not guarantee every change was saved. |
| App crashes or system restarts/shuts down | The app, or the whole device | The process ends; an abrupt failure may bypass preferred cleanup. | Only state already persisted can be relied on; a graceful shutdown does not make sudden power loss safe. |
1. The device sleeps after the lid closes
Sleep is a power-management decision for the computer, not an app restart instruction. A sleeping device can suspend processes; whether that happens, and how the device resumes, depends on the operating system and configured power behavior. The lid itself does not establish that an app exited.

2. The app moves to the background
On iOS, leaving the foreground moves an app briefly into the background before UIKit suspends it. Apple recommends using that transition to save user data, close files, and quiet work. The app has a short lifecycle transition, not an assurance that it can defer saving indefinitely. Apple’s UIKit guidance describes this sequence.
3. The app is suspended
Suspension means execution is paused, not that the app performed a clean quit. Apple puts it plainly: “When the user exits a foreground app, that app moves to the background state briefly before UIKit suspends it.” A suspended app can later resume in the same process, or the system can terminate it. Apple’s lifecycle guidance treats termination as part of the app lifecycle, not as a synonym for suspension.

4. A browser page is frozen
A browser can freeze a page by pausing its execution. Chrome’s Page Lifecycle API describes freeze and resume lifecycle events. A frozen page is not necessarily gone, but code should not treat its in-memory JavaScript state as permanent: the browser may later discard the page. Chrome’s Page Lifecycle API documentation explains the page states and events.
5. The system discards or terminates a page or app
Resource pressure can end a process without the user choosing Quit. Chrome says a page may be discarded when resources are constrained. Apple documents that iOS and watchOS may terminate background apps when memory is needed; task-timeout and file-lock issues are also among the causes covered in its current guidance. After termination, the old process is gone: returning to the app requires a launch or reconstruction path, not resuming that process. Preserve important data in durable storage so it can be restored. Apple’s termination guidance and Chrome’s page lifecycle documentation describe these platform-specific cases.

6. The user quits the app
An orderly quit differs from suspension because the app may have a chance to respond to a quit request, save documents, and clean up. That opportunity is useful only if the app implements it—and it is not a substitute for saving at meaningful points while the user works. Apple’s archived Cocoa guidance explains handling quit and session-end requests and accounting for unsaved documents: “Graceful Application Termination.” It is retired documentation, so treat it as general guidance about orderly termination, not a guarantee of current callbacks.
7. The app crashes, or the computer restarts or shuts down
A crash or externally ended process may not run the app’s preferred cleanup code. Microsoft recommends app-managed persistence for crashes and unexpected termination. Graceful logout, restart, or shutdown can provide orderly termination opportunities, but cannot protect data from abrupt power loss if it has not already been saved. Microsoft’s Windows App SDK lifecycle guidance and Apple’s archived termination guidance cover these different circumstances.

Will my app restart when I close my laptop?
Not necessarily. If closing the lid puts the device to sleep, the app may simply be suspended and later continue in the same process. If the device stays awake, its behavior may differ. If the app or page is terminated while you are away, returning to it requires a new launch or reconstruction. Those outcomes depend on the device’s power policy and the platform’s decisions; a lid close by itself does not tell you which one occurred.
Why did my app reload after sleep?
A reload can mean the original process or page did not survive while the device was asleep. A platform may terminate a background app under memory pressure, or a browser may discard a page. The app then launches again and restores whatever context it has persisted. A reload alone does not prove that closing the lid directly restarted the app.
What can an app safely forget?
An app should distinguish useful user context from temporary execution machinery. The former should be saved at meaningful checkpoints; the latter can often be rebuilt when the process returns or relaunches.
- Persist: user edits, document changes, and other work the user expects to keep. Do not depend only on a last-second termination callback.
- Restore when practical: useful context such as the current document or place in a workflow, using state the app actually saved.
- Rebuild or reacquire: transient work, open file handles, and live connections. A new process cannot assume these survived.
This division follows platform guidance to save user data and account for process termination. It does not mean every app restores every detail; restoration depends on the app’s design.
