A useful Java and Spring Boot operations lab makes production mechanisms observable: add Actuator, control which endpoints are reachable, distinguish readiness from liveness, and examine graceful shutdown. These experiments explain how an application reports its state and how a deployment can respond; they do not, by themselves, prove that an application is production-ready.
What this lab is meant to show
Spring describes Spring Boot’s production-ready features as tools to help monitor and manage an application after deployment. The [Spring Boot reference documentation](https://docs.spring.io/spring-boot/reference/actuator/index.html) covers Actuator features including health and metrics, with management available through HTTP endpoints and JMX.
The practical goal is to change one operating condition at a time, then inspect the application’s report or behavior. Keep the experiment focused on four questions: What can the application report? Which management interfaces are available? Should an instance receive traffic? What happens when it is asked to stop?
Set the lab’s boundaries before configuring it
Record the exact Java version, Spring Boot version, embedded server, and deployment environment used by the lab. The configuration examples below are not universal defaults: endpoint paths, properties, and shutdown behavior can depend on framework version and server. The cited material does not specify versions for a particular lab, so choose and document them rather than implying one tested setup.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Begin with a small application, then add Actuator using the dependency and configuration appropriate to that chosen Spring Boot version. Confirm which health and metrics capabilities that version actually provides before using them in an experiment. Avoid treating a route or a sample configuration as a guarantee that the same behavior applies to every release.
Observe health and metrics through Actuator
Actuator gives the lab a way to inspect monitoring and management information without inventing application behavior. Spring’s getting-started guide demonstrates the health endpoint at /actuator/health; use it as a version-sensitive example and check the path and endpoint configuration for the version you run. The guide also introduces metrics as an Actuator capability. [Spring’s getting-started guide](https://spring.io/guides/gs/actuator-service)

For each observation, note what information is returned and what condition in the application it represents. A healthy response is a status report, not proof of throughput, resilience, or successful operation under load. Metrics likewise become useful only when the lab identifies which measurements are available and how they will be inspected.
Endpoint availability is a security decision
A management URL existing in documentation does not mean the endpoint is enabled, exposed, or reachable in a running application. Treat these as separate controls: whether an endpoint is enabled, whether it is exposed over a management interface, whether the network allows access, and whether authentication or authorization protects it. Review the response itself as well; management data may reveal information that should not be public.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- List only the endpoints the experiment needs, and verify their enabled and exposed state for the selected version.
- Check whether access is possible over HTTP, JMX, or both, then restrict network reachability to the intended audience.
- Apply appropriate authentication and authorization where access is required; do not assume a non-obvious URL is access control.
- Inspect the returned information and avoid exposing management endpoints broadly.
Spring’s getting-started guide specifically cautions against enabling the shutdown endpoint on a publicly available application. Do not turn on shutdown merely to make the lab more convenient if its access path could be exposed.
Keep liveness and readiness experiments separate
Spring’s Kubernetes guidance discusses both liveness and readiness probes. They answer different operational questions: liveness asks whether an instance should be restarted, while readiness asks whether it should receive traffic. - Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Build two distinct experiments in the deployment environment you selected. Change a condition relevant to whether the process should continue running for the liveness case; separately change a condition that should make the instance temporarily unavailable for traffic for readiness. Observe the probe result and the platform response rather than assuming the same failure should trigger both actions.
In particular, do not put every dependency check into liveness by default. If a temporary dependency problem makes every instance fail liveness, the deployment may respond by restarting instances when the operational question was instead whether they should temporarily stop receiving traffic. Decide what each probe means for the application and validate the consequence in the actual platform configuration.

Observe graceful shutdown during termination
Graceful shutdown is a lifecycle behavior to examine when an application is terminated, such as during a deployment. Spring’s Kubernetes guide gives server.shutdown=graceful as a configuration example. Treat it as an example to validate against the Spring Boot version and server selected for the lab, not as a promise about a particular shutdown duration or outcome.
If the lab implements this experiment, send requests while initiating termination and observe how the application and deployment environment handle them. Record what happens rather than asserting a result in advance: the source material does not establish timings or outcomes for a specific server, version, or platform.
What the lab cannot prove
A local or narrowly configured demonstration can make monitoring, endpoint controls, probes, and shutdown easier to understand. It cannot establish production reliability, performance under load, or behavior across every server and deployment configuration. Those conclusions require evidence from the specific application and environment where it will run.
