A home broadband network is the equipment and connections inside a household that distribute an internet broadband service to devices. The broadband service brings internet access to the home; the home network shares that connection over Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or both.
What a home broadband network includes
In a typical setup, the provider’s network reaches household connection equipment, such as a modem or optical network terminal. A router or combined gateway then connects local devices and shares the internet connection. Devices link to that network using Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
This is a useful model, not a required equipment list. Providers may combine modem and router functions in one gateway, and the connection device depends on the access technology and provider.

Broadband internet access is the service that connects a household to internet endpoints. The home network is the local arrangement of equipment and links that lets household devices use that service. A router is part of the local network; it is not the broadband subscription itself.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
In U.S. regulation, broadband internet access service is defined as a mass-market retail service that provides the capability to transmit data to and receive data from all or substantially all internet endpoints. The definition excludes dial-up service; it is a U.S. regulatory definition, not a universal definition. See 47 CFR § 8.1.
What each part does
| Term | Role |
|---|---|
| Broadband service | Provides internet access to the household over the provider’s network. |
| Modem or other access equipment | Connects the home to the provider’s access network. The exact device varies by service and provider. |
| Router or gateway | Connects devices on the household’s local network and shares the connection. A gateway may combine router and access-equipment functions. |
| Wi-Fi or Ethernet | Provides wireless or wired links between local devices and the home network; neither is itself the broadband service. |

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
How the connection reaches your devices
- The provider delivers access to the home. The incoming connection may use cable, DSL, fiber, fixed wireless, or fixed satellite.
- Household access equipment connects to that service. Depending on the technology, this may be a modem, optical network terminal, receiver, or a provider-supplied combined gateway.
- The router or gateway makes a local network. It allows household devices to share the connection.
- Devices connect locally. They use Wi-Fi or a wired Ethernet connection, as supported by the equipment.
The FCC describes fixed broadband as service primarily serving end users at fixed endpoints using stationary equipment, such as a modem that connects a home router or another internet access device to the internet. Its examples include cable, DSL, fiber, fixed wireless, and fixed satellite. FCC 2017 broadband deployment report
Is Wi-Fi the same as broadband?
No. Wi-Fi is a wireless way for devices to connect to a local home network. Broadband is the internet access service delivered to the home. A household can have Wi-Fi even when its broadband connection is unavailable, but Wi-Fi alone does not provide internet access; it needs an internet connection to share.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
What varies from one home to another
- Access technology: The incoming broadband service may be cable, DSL, fiber, fixed wireless, or fixed satellite.
- Equipment arrangement: The modem or other access device and router may be separate, or their functions may be combined in a gateway.
- Equipment source: Equipment may be supplied by the provider, rented, or customer-owned. Provider compatibility and requirements determine which devices can be used.
- Local connections: Devices may connect by Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or a combination of the two.
A Wi-Fi router is one component that can distribute the connection to local devices; it does not replace the broadband subscription. Whether a household needs separate equipment depends on its existing setup and provider requirements. The FCC’s types of broadband connections overview lists common fixed access technologies.
