The best barcode reader SDK depends on where your app runs, which barcode formats it must read, and how reliably it must work in your conditions. Google ML Kit is a useful baseline for common on-device mobile scanning; Dynamsoft and Scandit are commercial options to evaluate when you need broader deployment coverage or workflow features; ZXing is an open-source comparison point for Java and Android projects. None is a universal winner: verify current compatibility and test candidates with your own devices, labels and workflow.

Which barcode reader SDKs are worth evaluating?

This shortlist reflects the capabilities each project or vendor describes in its official materials, not a hands-on comparison. Platform coverage, supported formats, licensing and product details can change, so confirm them against current documentation before choosing.

SDK What its official materials describe Best reason to evaluate it Important qualification
Google ML Kit Barcode Scanning On-device scanning without a network connection; common linear and 2D formats; structured 2D payload parsing; up to 10 barcodes per API call. A baseline for mobile apps that need common formats and offline scanning. Check the documented limitations and exact platform and distribution requirements. Google recommends Google Code Scanner when you do not need a custom scanning UI.
Dynamsoft Barcode Reader The vendor describes browser/WebAssembly, native iOS and Android, Flutter, React Native, MAUI, and desktop/server language support; it lists 30+ symbologies and a 30-day trial. A commercial candidate when you need to cover several deployment environments or formats. Its performance figures are vendor-published tests, not an independent cross-vendor result. Confirm framework versions, trial scope and licensing with Dynamsoft.
Scandit Barcode Scanner SDK The vendor describes mobile, web and cross-platform framework support, on-device image processing by default, a 30-day trial, and flat annual or usage-based pricing. A commercial candidate when workflow features and enterprise deployment are part of the evaluation. Published comparisons are Scandit’s own and carry test-condition and version caveats. Confirm current support and pricing with the vendor.
ZXing An open-source barcode scanning library project for Java and Android. A comparison point for projects considering open-source libraries. Check current project health, maintenance, bindings and license implications directly in the repository; the project description alone does not settle those questions.

Google ML Kit: a practical mobile baseline

ML Kit’s documented formats include Codabar, Code 39, Code 93, Code 128, EAN-8, EAN-13, ITF, UPC-A, UPC-E, Aztec, Data Matrix, PDF417 and QR Code. Its Barcode Scanning API works without a network connection, can parse certain structured 2D payloads, and recognizes no more than 10 barcodes in one API call. Those limits matter if a frame can contain more codes or if your required format or payload is not covered. Review Google’s format and limitation documentation against your actual requirements.

If the application does not need a custom scanning interface, Google points developers to Google Code Scanner. Treat that as a separate implementation choice: decide whether a prebuilt scanning experience meets your UX and integration needs before building a custom camera flow around the API.

Dynamsoft: broad deployment options to verify

Dynamsoft’s product overview describes support spanning browser/WebAssembly, native iOS and Android, Flutter, React Native, MAUI, and desktop/server language environments. It lists more than 30 symbologies and offers a 30-day trial, according to the vendor. That breadth makes it a candidate for teams supporting multiple targets, but the overview is not a substitute for checking the exact framework, operating-system versions, formats and licensing your project needs.

Scandit: evaluate workflow and deployment needs

Scandit describes mobile and web support, cross-platform frameworks, and on-device image processing by default. Its product page offers a 30-day trial and describes flat annual or usage-based pricing; ask the vendor which licensing model and terms apply to your deployment. Scandit also reports that its software handled 80 billion scans in 2025 across more than 170 million active devices. That is a vendor-reported usage figure, not an independent measure of scan accuracy or a guarantee for your application.

ZXing: an open-source point of comparison

ZXing’s repository describes an open-source barcode scanning library project for Java and Android. It can be useful to include in an evaluation if those environments fit your application and you are prepared to assess the project’s current condition yourself. Check maintenance activity, available bindings, license implications and compatibility at the project repository; the materials cited here do not establish a detailed current maintenance assessment.

What should you look for in a barcode scanner SDK?

Start with requirements that can rule an SDK out; only then compare performance, price or convenience. Scandit’s selection guide names scanning performance, symbology support, UI support, security and privacy, scalability, development environments, documentation, developer support, licensing and pricing, and software releases as factors to evaluate. Apply those factors to your application rather than treating them as a universal ranking.

Formats and deployment environment

  • List every required symbology and relevant variant, then verify explicit support in the vendor’s current documentation. “Supports barcode scanning” does not establish that a library reads your formats.
  • Confirm the exact operating systems, browser environments, languages and frameworks you will ship. A vendor’s broad platform list does not necessarily mean every feature is available in every binding.
  • Check whether the SDK can operate offline and where image processing occurs. Consider privacy, connectivity and data-handling requirements alongside technical fit.

Capture conditions and workflow

  • Decide whether you need one barcode or several codes in a frame, and whether capture must be continuous, triggered or guided by a particular interface.
  • Test the conditions that matter in your setting: low light, blur, glare, damaged or occluded labels, skew, distance, orientation and dense codes.
  • Consider whether a prebuilt scanning UI is sufficient or whether your app needs custom camera controls and workflow components.

Operational and commercial fit

  • Measure integration effort, app or web bundle footprint, load time, memory use and battery impact on representative devices.
  • Review documentation, developer support, release history and the effort required to maintain each integration.
  • Compare trial scope and licensing terms with your expected deployment. Ask vendors for applicable pricing rather than assuming that a trial, a listed pricing model or a benchmark establishes total cost.

For a broader checklist, see Scandit’s guide to choosing a barcode scanner SDK. It is a vendor guide, so use its criteria as a prompt for your own evaluation rather than as an independent product comparison.

How to compare SDKs fairly

Published speed and accuracy claims are not portable guarantees. Different labels, devices, SDK releases and test conditions can change the result. A useful comparison runs the same representative inputs through each shortlisted SDK and records both scanning outcomes and the cost of integrating the software.

  1. Write down acceptance requirements. Specify target devices, operating systems, browsers or frameworks; required symbologies; offline needs; and whether each frame may contain multiple codes.
  2. Build a representative test set. Include clean labels and difficult cases such as blur, low light, glare, damage, occlusion, skew, distance and dense codes. Use labeled images or video, live capture, or both where appropriate.
  3. Run the same scenarios on each candidate. Use representative low-, mid- and high-tier devices. Keep the test inputs and workflow consistent, while recording any SDK-specific configuration needed to make a valid comparison.
  4. Record outcomes and conditions. Track successful reads, false positives, misses and latency, as well as app footprint, battery impact and engineering effort. Record SDK and OS versions, device models, configuration, sample count and test date so results can be reproduced.
  5. Decide against your requirements. Give greater weight to the failures your users cannot tolerate. A result that is acceptable for a controlled warehouse workflow may not fit a different camera, label or capture process.

How much weight should vendor benchmarks carry?

Use published benchmarks to generate questions for your own test, not to rank SDKs as if every team shared the test environment. The following figures are vendor claims with narrow scopes:

  • Dynamsoft: Its overview reports 86.7% detection in a test involving 337 unique barcodes and 16 image-quality categories, alongside lower results for unnamed competitors in the displayed comparison. These are Dynamsoft-published figures. The page also has a separate FAQ describing a different sample, so the two descriptions should not be combined into one test claim.
  • Scandit versus ZXing: Scandit reports a Product Engineering comparison on a Samsung Galaxy S9 with Code 128: 4.0 seconds versus ZXing’s 6.93 seconds; 0% versus 5% false positives; and maximum ranges of 168 cm versus 37 cm. It also reports reading 11 of 11 damaged codes versus ZXing’s 2 of 11. These figures are from Scandit’s comparison; test conditions and SDK versions are not fully current, and Scandit says to contact it for current data.

Neither comparison is an independent, cross-vendor benchmark. Do not assume its result predicts performance on your devices, labels or SDK versions. Ask vendors for test methods and current data, then compare candidates on the same workload.

SDK software is not scanner hardware

A barcode reader SDK is software integrated into an application, often using a camera. A physical scanner is a hardware device; its connection and input behavior are a separate design choice. A generic handheld scanner is not a substitute for comparing camera-based SDKs, so choose hardware only if your workflow actually requires it.
