Selenium is an open-source project for automating web browsers, not a single test application. Its main components serve different jobs: WebDriver lets you write browser automation in code, Selenium IDE records and replays browser actions, and Selenium Grid runs WebDriver sessions remotely across machines and browser environments. Choose based on how you need to author and run automation; Selenium does not replace a test framework, sound test design, or CI system.

What is Selenium?

Selenium is a family of tools and libraries for controlling web browsers. Its project documentation sums up the scope as “Selenium automates browsers. That’s it!” Selenium’s browser automation project can support testing, but it does not itself decide what to test or provide every part of a testing process.

The core programmable interface is Selenium WebDriver. Language bindings let code send browser-control commands through browser-specific driver implementations. The Selenium project describes WebDriver as a W3C Recommendation. WebDriver documentation also covers WebDriver BiDi, the project’s bidirectional browser automation interface.

WebDriver, IDE, and Grid: what is the difference?

Component What it does Best fit Trade-off
WebDriver Controls a browser from code through language bindings. Coded browser regression tests and repeatable automation. Tests need deliberate locators, waits, assertions, and ongoing maintenance.
Selenium IDE A browser extension for recording and replaying actions. Quick bug reproductions and automation-aided exploratory testing. A recording is a useful starting point, not automatically a durable regression suite.
Selenium Grid Routes WebDriver scripts to remote browser instances. Running sessions across browser versions, operating systems, or machines, including parallel runs. Requires deployment, network, and security management.

The Selenium project recommends WebDriver for robust browser-based regression suites, IDE for quick reproduction or exploration, and Grid for distributing tests across environments. Selenium project overview

Is Selenium still used for test automation?

Selenium remains an actively maintained open-source browser automation project. Its official downloads page lists language bindings and Selenium Server releases; the version shown there is a dated snapshot, not a promise that the same release remains current. Selenium is a fit when a team wants browser automation integrated with its own codebase and test runner. It is not a complete testing strategy: teams still need to choose coverage, design reliable checks, and run them in an appropriate workflow.

How do I install Selenium and manage browser drivers?

Start with WebDriver when you want maintainable, coded tests. Select a language binding that fits your existing code and test runner, install it, and make a supported browser available. The project’s getting-started guide describes this basic setup and browser support. Selenium getting started

Local setup path

  1. Choose a language and its Selenium binding from the official Selenium downloads page.
  2. Install the binding using the package-management method documented for that language, and install or make available a browser you intend to automate.
  3. Write a small WebDriver test using your chosen test runner. Include explicit assertions and use stable locators and suitable waits rather than relying on timing guesses.
  4. Run it locally, confirm the expected browser behavior, then add it to your existing test workflow.

Selenium Manager is used by Selenium bindings by default to manage drivers and browsers, which can reduce manual driver setup. You still need a language binding and a browser. Selenium Manager does not select a test framework or design the test cases for you. See the Selenium documentation and installation guide.

How do I run Selenium tests across multiple browsers?

First make the WebDriver tests reliable on one local browser. Then run them against additional browsers or environments by configuring the relevant browser sessions, or use Grid when sessions need to run remotely. Keep tests independent and safe to run concurrently before enabling parallel execution: shared accounts, mutable test data, and external side effects can make parallel tests interfere with each other.

When Selenium Grid is useful

Grid routes WebDriver requests to remote browser instances, enabling coverage across browser versions, operating systems, and machines. It is useful when local execution is insufficient for the environment matrix or parallel workload you need. Selenium Grid documentation

Grid deployment choices

  • Standalone: runs all Grid components in one process on one machine. The quick start listens for RemoteWebDriver requests on localhost:4444 by default.
  • Hub/Node: separates the coordinating hub from browser nodes for a multi-machine arrangement.
  • Distributed: splits Grid roles across services for a larger deployment.

The Grid quick start calls for Java 11 or higher, installed browsers, and the Selenium Server JAR. Selenium Manager can configure drivers when enabled. Follow the official Grid getting-started guide for the current launch commands and configuration details.

Protect Grid access

Do not expose a Grid endpoint to untrusted networks. Selenium warns that an exposed Grid can let third parties reach internal web applications and files or run custom binaries. Restrict network access and treat Grid security as a deployment requirement. Selenium Grid security guidance

Which Selenium component should you choose?

  • Choose WebDriver for coded, repeatable regression tests that belong in your application’s code and test runner.
  • Choose Selenium IDE for a quick recorded reproduction or exploratory workflow, then assess and maintain any important checks as code.
  • Choose Grid after local WebDriver tests work and you need remote environments or parallel execution.
