R Markdown lets you combine an explanation, executable R code, and the results of that code in one document. You write a source file ending in .Rmd, then render it to create an HTML page, PDF, Word document, slides, or another supported output. That makes it useful for sharing an analysis without separating its explanation from the code and results that support it.
What is R Markdown?
R Markdown is a document format and authoring workflow for writing prose alongside code and code-generated output. A report can explain an analysis in ordinary text, run R code where calculations or figures are needed, and place the resulting output beside the explanation. The official Introduction to R Markdown describes this combination of text, embedded R chunks, and results; the official learning guide covers uses ranging from analyst-to-analyst notebooks to reports for decision makers.
A useful way to think about it is as one source document with several cooperating parts: Markdown for the explanation, code chunks for computation, and a renderer that assembles the finished document. Because the report is generated from code, it can stay connected to the analysis—but rendering is not an automatic guarantee of reproducibility. The code, input data, required packages, and relevant environment must still be available and working.
What goes into an .Rmd file?
A typical .Rmd file has three elements: YAML metadata at the top, Markdown prose, and fenced code chunks. The metadata commonly identifies the document and its output format. Prose uses Markdown for headings, paragraphs, lists, and other text. Code chunks contain R code to execute and may include options that control which code and results appear.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

## A result
This paragraph explains what the analysis is doing.
```{r}
```
This is an illustrative structure: the lines between the first pair of --- are YAML metadata, the heading and paragraph are Markdown, and the fenced block marked {r} is an R chunk. The official package documentation walks through creating a starter document, adding prose and chunks, and rendering it. Once that basic pattern is clear, chunk options can be used to control the display of code, results, plots, messages, and warnings.
How do you render an R Markdown document?
Rendering turns the source file into the output you requested. In the usual R Markdown workflow, knitr executes the embedded code and produces an intermediate Markdown document containing the results; Pandoc then converts that document to the selected format. The R Markdown Quick Tour describes this sequence and the range of possible outputs.

- Create or open an .Rmd file. In RStudio, use the Knit control to render and preview the document. The package workflow also supports rendering from R.
- Check the document’s output setting. For example,
output: html_documentrequests an HTML document. The output setting determines the target artifact. - Render the file. A programmatic render can be requested with
rmarkdown::render("report.Rmd"), replacing the filename with your own. In RStudio, select Knit. - Inspect the rendered result. Confirm that the prose, code output, figures, and links appear as intended in the chosen format.
If rendering stops, start with the first reported error rather than the final summary. Common causes include an error in a code chunk, a missing package or other dependency, an input file that cannot be found, or a requirement specific to the selected output format. Check that the relevant software and files are available, then render again. Different output formats do not necessarily have identical setup requirements.
Which output format should you choose?
Choose the format according to how the reader will use the finished document. HTML is a convenient first preview in the official package getting-started material; Word can suit a document that needs further editing, PDF can suit a fixed-layout handoff, and slide output can suit a presentation. The official quick tour also lists handouts, books, dashboards, and package vignettes among possible outputs. The table gives practical starting points, not a promise that every format works without configuration.

| Output | Useful when | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| HTML | You want a web page or a convenient preview. | Check the result in a browser and confirm any required features work in the intended viewing context. |
| Word | The document needs further editing in a word processor. | Check that the layout and elements you need are preserved in the generated document. |
| You need a fixed-layout file for sharing or handoff. | Confirm the format-specific software and configuration needed by your setup. | |
| Slides | You are preparing a presentation rather than a conventional report. | Select a suitable slide output and verify that the presentation layout meets your needs. |
| Other supported formats | Your workflow calls for a handout, book, dashboard, vignette, or another listed artifact. | Consult the relevant format documentation; availability does not mean every format renders without setup. |
The official quick tour documents this broad set of formats. There is no single best output for every project: decide whether the reader needs a web page, editable document, fixed-layout file, presentation, or another specific artifact, then account for any required features and format-specific setup.

For a first hands-on exercise, create a new .Rmd file, add a short explanation and one R chunk, then render it as HTML. This keeps the first task focused on the central workflow: write, compute, render, inspect. The package documentation’s getting-started material provides this kind of direct introduction.
