If you want one free tool to generate and keep unique passwords across devices, Bitwarden’s free individual plan is a practical option. But browser password saving is not automatically unsafe: the Federal Trade Commission says browsers, devices, and password managers can all save and autofill passwords. Choose the setup that fits your devices and habits, then protect it with a strong master password and multifactor authentication (MFA).
Why use a password manager instead of browser storage?
The main benefit is not that a password manager makes every account invulnerable. It makes it easier to use a different strong password for each account without trying to memorize them all. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) recommends using a manager to generate and store strong, unique passwords, and cautions against keeping passwords in an easily accessed plaintext note or file.
A browser’s built-in password saving can also store and autofill credentials. The FTC explicitly notes that a browser, device, or password manager can do this. A standalone manager is worth considering if you want a dedicated vault or need a consistent way to access credentials across browsers and devices. The right choice depends on your compatibility, sync, backup, and recovery needs—not on a blanket rule that browser storage is unsafe.

How to switch without locking yourself out
- Check your devices and browsers. Make sure Bitwarden has a suitable app or extension for each place where you sign in. Review the download options before changing your usual setup.
- Create your account and secure it. Choose a strong master password that you do not reuse elsewhere. Enable MFA. The FTC recommends an authenticator app or security key over text or email passcodes when those stronger options are available.
- Move your saved logins into the manager. Use the available import process for your current browser or password store, and check that important entries arrived correctly. Do not leave an exported password file in an easily accessible location; it contains credentials in a form that may be readable outside the vault.
- Test access before removing the old copy. Sign in to a few important accounts using the new vault on your everyday devices. Keep a safe recovery plan for the manager account, since losing access to the master password can make the vault inaccessible.
- Use generated, unique passwords as you update accounts. Change reused passwords, starting with email and other important accounts, and save each new password in the vault. You do not need to change every password at once; prioritize accounts where reuse creates the most risk.
- Remove browser-saved copies when you are confident the vault works. Delete old entries using your browser’s password settings. Menu names vary by browser and version, so consult its current help if the setting is not obvious.
Choose cloud sync or local storage based on your routine
Cloud sync can make credentials available across devices with less manual work. CISA notes that it is convenient when you need access in more than one place. A locally maintained password database can suit someone who wants to manage storage themselves, but it brings a continuing responsibility: keep regular backups and know how to restore them.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
Before committing, check whether the manager supports all your devices, how it handles sync, what recovery options it offers, and which features are included in its free plan. A setup that is difficult to maintain or recover may not be the best fit, even if its storage approach sounds appealing.

Protect the password manager account
Your vault concentrates access to many accounts, so protect its account with a strong, unique master password and MFA. The FTC identifies authenticator apps and security keys as stronger MFA choices than passcodes sent by text or email when available. A security key is optional; an authenticator app is another way to add a second factor.

- Requires 3 "AAA" batteries (included)
- Unit auto-locks for 30 minutes after 5 consecutive incorrect PINs
Think through recovery before relying on the vault for every login. CISA highlights account recovery as a factor when choosing a manager. Make sure you understand the service’s recovery options and keep any recovery information somewhere secure and accessible to you. Do not assume that support can restore a vault if you lose the credentials needed to unlock it.

If your browser’s password manager works across the devices you use, offers the protections you need, and is easy for you to maintain, switching is not mandatory. A dedicated manager may be more convenient when you use several browsers or want one password vault outside a single browser’s ecosystem. Either way, use unique passwords, protect the account that stores them, and avoid plaintext password files.
