Light-responsive polymer networks can twist and coil, suggesting one possible route to muscle-like movement in future soft robots. But the work behind “A flexible future for robotics” was a 2013 study of small cantilevers—not a working robot or a technology shown to be ready for practical use.
What did the researchers demonstrate?
In a 2013 study, Jeong Jae Wie, Kyung Min Lee, Matthew L. Smith, Richard A. Vaia and Timothy J. White made small cantilever structures from azobenzene-functionalized liquid-crystalline polymer networks. The Royal Society of Chemistry’s 19 August 2013 summary describes the cantilevers twisting and coiling in response to external light. Their torsional direction depended in part on how the material was ordered; the account also identifies changes in light polarity and intensity as drivers of motion.
The result mattered because it explored movements beyond a simple bend. Torsion and out-of-plane motion could, in principle, help responsive materials reproduce more dexterous forms of movement. The study’s title was “Torsional mechanical responses in azobenzene functionalized liquid crystalline polymer networks,” published in Soft Matter in 2013 (DOI: 10.1039/C3SM51574E).
How could light-responsive material move a robot?
A robotic actuator converts an input into movement. In this work, light was the input and deformation of the polymer cantilevers was the movement. That makes the material relevant to a possible future soft-robot actuator: rather than relying on rigid joints alone, a robot might use a deformable material to create a twisting or curling motion.

That is a possible application, not what the researchers built. The reported structures were small test pieces. The RSC account does not describe an autonomous robot, a complete muscle system, or a demonstration of the material integrated into a practical machine. It presents the work as a potential material basis for biologically inspired robotic movement.
What were the main limitations?
The 2013 account says the materials were confined to small scales and thin films, and that practical robotic applications were far off at the time. It identifies several engineering hurdles:

- Scale: the small cantilevers would need to be made useful at larger dimensions.
- Mechanical output: the material’s output would need to meet the demands of larger movements; robotics expert Gursel Alici raised the challenge of matching skeletal-muscle output.
- Motion complexity: a broader range of useful movements would be needed for more capable robotic systems.
- Robustness: the structures would need to withstand the demands of larger-scale use.
Alici, of the University of Wollongong, said the work “makes a significant contribution towards the realisation of biologically inspired robotic systems,” while also questioning scale-up and muscle-like mechanical output. Matthew L. Smith, identified in the article as an assistant professor at Hope College, agreed that practical applications were far off. These comments describe the outlook reported in 2013; they are not evidence that the listed challenges were later solved.
Is this a current robotics technology?
No. “A flexible future for robotics” is a historical research feature about a promising materials experiment, not a current product announcement or a survey of today’s robotics. The RSC summary reports no quantitative performance figures, such as force, dimensions, speed or durability, so it does not support a numerical comparison with other actuators. Its value is in showing a research direction: light could prompt a thin, responsive polymer structure to twist, while substantial engineering work remained between that motion and a useful robot.
