Chroma Panel may suit a React app that needs more than a basic color field: its maintainer documents a wheel, sliders, palettes, image sampling, opacity controls, and other selection modes. Sohail Khan’s case for switching is a personal preference, not proof that every project should switch. The right choice depends on the modes your users need, your app’s compatibility and accessibility requirements, and the cost of adding the package.
Why consider switching to a richer React color picker?
A simple color input works when users only need to enter or choose a color. It can become limiting when the interface needs to support workflows such as picking a color directly from an image, choosing from a brand palette, adjusting hue with a wheel, or fine-tuning color channels with sliders.
In his DEV Community article, Sohail Khan describes those needs as his reason for moving to Chroma Panel. That explains the appeal for some applications; it does not establish that Chroma Panel is better for every project. A compact input may remain the better fit when it covers the workflow without extra modes or migration work.

What Chroma Panel offers
The maintainer describes the npm package as a React color picker for forms, toolbars, settings, and design tools. Its documented components include a compact ColorInput and an inline ChromaPanel. The panel’s documented selection tools include:

Install it and check the current API examples
The article and repository document installation through npm:
npm install chroma-panel
Examples in the article and README do not use exactly the same component shape. Khan’s example imports ChromaPanel, keeps a hex value in React state, and updates it using newColor.hex. The current README separately shows a ColorInput example and an inline ChromaPanel example. Check the documentation for the package version you install before copying either example; names and APIs can differ across versions.

The repository says the package includes TypeScript types, has no runtime dependencies, and lists React and React DOM as peer dependencies. Treat those as maintainer statements and confirm the installed version’s package metadata and peer requirements, especially if your app uses a particular React release.
Check compatibility and bundle impact before adopting it
The repository’s compatibility table lists React 16.14 and later, including React 19, and Chrome 123, Firefox 120, and Safari 17.5. The README connects its browser baseline to stylesheet use of light-dark(). These are maintainer-listed requirements; verify them against the exact release and browsers your users rely on.

The maintainers report an added 23.1 kB gzipped for all five modes, or 15.0 kB for the panel shell plus one mode. They describe these figures as the increase in a Vite production build with React external. They are not an independent benchmark and should not be compared directly with figures produced using a different build setup or measurement method. Measure the contribution in your own application if bundle size affects the decision.

Compare the package against your actual requirements rather than choosing by a broad “better” label. Search results identify react-colorful and react-color as alternatives, but the available material does not support a fair, current, feature-by-feature ranking among them. - What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Selection workflow: List the modes your users need—such as a basic field, wheel, sliders, swatches, image sampling, eyedropper, or gradients—and confirm that the relevant package version provides them.
- Integration: Check controlled and uncontrolled state behavior, form integration, TypeScript support, React compatibility, SSR or client-component needs, and fit with your app’s existing conventions.
- Accessibility: Test keyboard operation, semantic inputs, screen-reader behavior, and contrast in the target application. A project’s accessibility description alone does not establish how it works in your interface.
- Runtime and maintenance: Check browser support, peer dependencies, the current release, changelog and issue activity, and the license terms for the version you intend to adopt.
- Cost of change: Account for replacing the current component, adapting stored color values or event handlers, and testing affected forms and design workflows.

When Chroma Panel is—and is not—a sensible switch
It is worth evaluating when the current picker cannot support a real workflow your users need—for example, sampling colors from artwork or offering several ways to refine a choice. Its documented modes may help consolidate those interactions into one React package.
Keep the current picker if it already handles the required workflow and the added modes would go unused, or if Chroma Panel’s compatibility, API, accessibility behavior, bundle contribution, or maintenance profile does not meet your application’s requirements. The practical decision is whether its capabilities justify the integration and verification work in your project.
