For WordPress owners, the sensible starting point is still ordinary SEO: publish distinctive, helpful pages, make them crawlable and indexable, and measure what happens. Google says its AI Overviews and AI Mode rely on core Search systems; there is no special GEO setting, schema, plugin, or file that guarantees visibility.
What is generative engine optimization?
GEO describes efforts to improve the chance that content will be surfaced or cited in answers generated by search engines and other AI systems. It is a useful label, not a universal technical standard or a published ranking formula. The term became prominent after a 2024 research paper proposed methods for improving visibility in generative-engine responses; those experiments do not establish a reliable recipe for every website or platform.
This guide focuses on what Google documents for its own generative Search features—AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google’s guidance should not be treated as a checklist for ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, or every other answer engine.
Does SEO still matter for Google AI search?
Yes. Google says AI features are grounded in its core Search systems, so established SEO fundamentals remain relevant. A page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet to be eligible as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Eligibility is not a promise: Google may not crawl, index, or show a page, even when it meets the stated requirements.

How do I optimize a WordPress site for AI search?
Work through these checks on the pages that matter to your readers. The WordPress-specific settings below are practical implementation checks; they are not special Google GEO requirements.
1. Build a page around a real reader need
Answer a specific question accurately and with enough original detail to be useful. Avoid publishing many near-duplicate pages just to target small variations of the same query. Google warns that scaled content created primarily to manipulate rankings or generative responses can violate its spam policies.

2. Make the page accessible to Search
Confirm that the page is public, that crawling is not blocked by WordPress visibility settings, robots.txt, or hosting and CDN controls, and that it is linked from relevant parts of your site. Review canonical behavior, sitemap coverage, and any SEO-plugin controls that could affect indexing or snippets. These checks help ensure Search can access the page; none guarantees that it will be indexed or cited.
3. Put important information in readable text
Make the key facts and explanations available as text rather than relying on an image, video, or interactive element alone. Add useful, high-quality images or video where they improve the page for people. Google recommends a good page experience and internal links that help people and crawlers discover your content.
4. Use structured data for the right reason
Google says, “Structured data isn’t required for generative AI search, and there’s no special schema.org markup you need to add.” Structured data can still support eligible Search rich results when it follows Google’s policies and accurately matches visible page content. It is not a shortcut to AI citations.
5. Review AI-assisted content before publishing
Google says generative AI can help with research and structure, but the finished content still needs accuracy, quality, relevance, and added value. Check factual claims, metadata, image alt text, and structured data instead of publishing generated material unchecked. Where it is appropriate to the reader and subject, provide context about how content was produced.
Do I need llms.txt for Google AI Overviews?
No. Google says it does not use llms.txt for Search visibility. A site owner may choose to maintain such a file for another service, but it is not a Google AI Overviews requirement.
Does schema markup help AI search?
There is no special AI schema required for Google’s generative Search features. Use structured data when it is appropriate for a supported Search feature, follow the relevant policies, and ensure the markup describes content people can actually see on the page. Adding markup solely in the hope of earning an AI citation is not supported by Google’s guidance.
Rank #4
Do pages need short answer blocks or a special AI writing style?
No. Google says there is no ideal page length, no requirement to break a page into tiny chunks, and no special writing style for generative AI Search. Its systems can understand synonyms and general meanings. Organize a page to help its intended audience: use headings, lists, or concise answers when they make the subject clearer, not as a supposed AI ranking trick.
How can I see whether my site appears in AI Overviews?
Verify your site in Google Search Console, then look for the generative AI performance report. Google’s report documentation says it covers impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode and offers page, country, date, and device dimensions. Google states that the report rollout reached websites worldwide on August 31, 2026. A property may not show the report if it has too few impressions or has opted out.
Use the report to observe visibility over time and identify which pages, countries, or devices account for impressions. An impression is evidence that a result was shown, not proof that a particular edit or tactic caused a change. Google notes that new data may be preliminary and documents aggregation and row limitations.

What does GEO research actually show?
The 2024 paper “GEO: Generative Engine Optimization” introduced GEO-bench, a test set of 10,000 queries, and reported visibility improvements of up to 40% for tested methods across its generative-engine query set and up to 37% on Perplexity. Those are experimental maximums from the paper’s evaluations—not expected results for a WordPress site, guarantees for current commercial products, or proof that the same tactics work across engines. The authors report that effectiveness varies across domains.
Should I use a GEO plugin for WordPress?
A plugin may be useful if it solves a concrete publishing or technical problem, but a GEO label is not evidence that it improves citations. Google cautions that “No third-party tool has access to our internal ranking or AI systems.” The WordPress.org SEOBetter listing, for example, describes features such as citation scoring, AI content generation, schema, and llms.txt. The listing establishes what the plugin says it offers, not that those features improve visibility.
Before installing any GEO-marketed add-on, check whether it:
- Solves a real workflow or technical issue rather than promising a ranking outcome.
- Works with your existing SEO plugin, theme, and WordPress setup.
- Keeps generated metadata and structured data accurate and consistent with visible content.
- Explains what information it sends to external services, whether an account or API key is needed, and what its privacy and data-retention terms are.
- Has a suitable maintenance history, support, accessibility, export options, and cost for your needs.
These are evaluation criteria, not claims that a particular plugin has passed them.

A practical way to approach GEO
- Choose an important page and identify the reader question it should answer.
- Improve the page’s accuracy, usefulness, and original detail; avoid thin, repetitive pages.
- Check that it is public, crawlable, internally linked, and eligible for indexing and snippets.
- Keep important information in text; use images, video, and structured data only when they help readers or serve an appropriate Search feature.
- Use Search Console’s generative AI report when it is available, and interpret impressions as visibility data rather than proof of causation.
- Assess plugins by their actual workflow, compatibility, data handling, and maintenance—not by promises to reveal or guarantee Google rankings.
