CSS Regions was a proposed CSS feature for sending content from source elements into a sequence of separate display boxes. Its two key properties were flow-into, which assigned content to a named flow, and flow-from, which made boxes display that flow. The idea is useful to understand, but CSS Regions is a legacy, experimental feature—not something to rely on in a new site.

What CSS Regions were designed to do

Ordinary CSS generally lays out an element’s content within that element’s box. CSS Regions proposed separating the content’s source from the boxes where it appears. Authors could assign content to a named flow, then connect one or more other boxes to that flow.

The CSS Regions specification summarizes the concept as “Display this content (a named flow) over there (a region chain).” In practical terms, the source could stay in one place in the document while its content flowed through display boxes elsewhere.

How named flows work

A named flow is a labeled stream of content. The source element joins the stream using flow-into; destination boxes receive it using flow-from.

#story {
  flow-into: article-flow;
}

.column-one,
.column-two {
  flow-from: article-flow;
}

In this historical example, the content of #story is assigned to article-flow. The two column boxes are connected to the same flow, so the flow can continue from one region to the next according to the module’s fragmentation behavior. This illustrates the design; it is not recommended production CSS.

What counts as a region—and what does not

A region is a box that displays content from a named flow. A flow can involve one or more source elements and one or more regions. Regions need not be next to each other in document order.

CSS Regions did not define a layout system for creating, sizing, or positioning those boxes. Other CSS layout mechanisms would do that work. The proposal’s distinctive idea was to let authors connect content to destination boxes independently of where the source appeared.

What CSS Regions were intended for

The proposal described uses where authors wanted more control over how content was distributed or displayed, including:

  • Custom handling for overflowing content.
  • Aggregating content from multiple sources.
  • Linking display boxes into a flow.
  • Magazine-style layouts.
  • Paginated views.

These examples explain the feature’s design goals; they do not mean CSS Regions is a practical choice for implementing those layouts today.

Can you use CSS Regions today?

No—not as a dependable feature for a contemporary website. The CSS Working Group’s CSS Regions Module Level 1 Editor’s Draft, dated 18 January 2026, is a discussion document that may change and does not imply W3C endorsement. Can I use’s CSS Regions compatibility summary reports that the feature was once supported in WebKit-based browsers and Internet Explorer, but that browser implementation is no longer being pursued. This is a high-level status summary, not a full browser-and-version matrix.

An earlier W3C Working Draft dated 9 October 2014 also states that unsupported syntax is treated as invalid and ignored as appropriate. In other words, adding flow-into and flow-from to a site today does not provide consistent behavior across browsers.

  • For text split into columns, investigate current CSS multi-column layout and confirm its browser support for your target audience.
  • For printed or paged output, assess the specific pagination tools and browser behavior required by your project.
  • For responsive placement, use a current layout approach suited to the desired visual arrangement, while keeping the document’s source order meaningful.

Whichever approach you consider, check how it handles browser support, reading order, fragmentation or pagination, accessibility, and implementation complexity. The CSS Regions model is worth knowing as part of CSS’s history, but its named-flow syntax should be treated as a conceptual example rather than a modern implementation recommendation.
