A bedside smart button can start a goodnight scene with one press: for example, switch off selected lights and make other small, useful changes around the home. The benefit is convenience, not magic—and the setup only works as intended when the button, smart-home platform, and accessories are compatible.
Because no specific button or household setup is established here, the example below is a practical pattern rather than a claim about a tested personal installation.
What a bedtime button should do
Keep the scene deliberately small. Choose a few actions you already want at bedtime, such as turning off living-room lights, dimming a hall light, or setting a compatible thermostat. A press should make those actions easier to start; it should not become the only way to control devices.
Think through the state of each device. If a light is already off, the scene should still be useful. If a device is unavailable, the other actions may or may not complete, depending on the platform and accessory. Check the result when an action matters rather than assuming every device responded.

How the main smart-home platforms handle it
| Platform | What its documentation supports | Requirements and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Home | Scenes can control multiple accessories. Apple’s example “Good Night” scene turns off lights and locks the front door. An accessory event can trigger an automation to run a scene or control accessories. Apple Home scenes and automations | Apple says to set up a home hub and add compatible accessories before using automations. Scene setup includes a preview and test step. Apple Home supports Matter accessories. Set up accessories and automations in Apple Home |
| Google Home | Documented smart-switch starters include supported double-tap, hold, and release events. Actions can include lights, thermostats, locks, and window coverings. Google Home automation starters and actions | Google says PIN-code-required smart locks are not supported for the listed lock action. Automations are for convenience and can depend on internet, Wi-Fi, and third-party service availability. Google Home automation limitations |
| Amazon Alexa | Routines can group actions and be triggered by voice, time of day, or a smart-home device. Alexa’s Matter documentation lists generic buttons, lights and plugs, thermostats, locks, and window coverings as supported categories. Alexa Matter device categories | Category support alone does not confirm that a particular button exposes the press event you need in your Alexa setup. Confirm exact product and routine compatibility before relying on it. Alexa routines can also set a thermostat’s temperature or fan mode. Matter support · Alexa routine actions |
For Matter devices, Apple describes accessories as available in Apple Home and compatible third-party HomeKit/Matter apps, but that does not remove the need to verify the specific button, hub, and event combination. Apple Home and Matter accessories
Plan the button and scene before buying
- Pick the ecosystem. Decide whether you will build the routine in Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, or another supported platform. A button’s compatibility label does not necessarily guarantee every press pattern or automation feature.
- Check hub or bridge requirements. Apple’s automation guidance calls for a home hub. For other ecosystems, check the exact button’s requirements and the platform documentation for the desired automation.
- Verify the press events. Confirm whether the button offers the event you intend to use—such as a single press, double press, hold, or release—and that the platform recognizes it as a trigger. Google’s documentation, for example, lists supported multi-press, hold, and release starters for smart switches; availability depends on the switch and setup.
- List the scene actions. Identify the lights and other accessories you already own and want to control. Check that each is supported by the ecosystem and that the action you want is available for it.
- Build and test the routine. Use the platform’s current scene or routine controls, then test each action and the full sequence. Apple specifically provides a scene preview/test step; do not assume other platforms offer the same process.
- Keep normal controls handy. Make sure you can still use the app, wall switch, voice control, or device’s own control if the button or network is unavailable.
Treat locks and network-dependent actions carefully
A bedtime routine may include a lock, but a scene is not proof that a door actually locked. If you add a lock action, check its status in the platform or on the lock itself, and retain an ordinary way to lock and verify it. Google explicitly cautions that its automations are for convenience rather than safety- or security-critical use because internet, Wi-Fi, or third-party service problems may stop them from running. A cloud-connected routine should not be your only security measure.

What makes the setup worthwhile
The useful test is simple: does one press reliably start a few bedtime actions you would otherwise do separately, without creating new uncertainty? If so, the button can remove a small point of friction. If compatibility is unclear, the scene is too complicated, or you would have to trust an automation for a security-critical result, simplify it or keep that action manual.
A community discussion captures the practical question—whether a button can turn off all the lights in a house—but it is a reader question, not evidence that any particular product will do so. Smart-home button discussion
