The recipe is a starting point—not a guarantee of real-world performance or a universal method for every problem.
1. Define the task and the output you need
Start by stating what the system should do and what its output should look like. For example, classification assigns an input to a category, while regression predicts a numerical value. Other tasks may generate or transform information. The task determines what data to collect and how to judge success.
For a classification problem, identify the inputs, or features, and the target category you want the model to predict. A useful first question is whether the target is something you can represent consistently in the examples.
2. Gather examples and represent them as data
Machine learning uses examples to learn a relationship between inputs and outputs. Collect examples that reflect the task, then represent each one in a form the model can use. In a supervised learning setup, an example typically pairs features with a target value or category.

Data choice is part of the problem, not a clerical step: a model can only learn patterns present in the examples it receives. If the examples do not represent the situations in which you plan to use the model, a good score on those examples may not translate to useful predictions.
3. Choose a model and an objective
A model maps inputs to outputs. Choose a model appropriate to the task, then define an objective—often expressed as a loss—that measures how well its predictions match the examples. Training seeks model parameters that reduce this loss.

A simple linear model can illustrate the idea without requiring a neural network. In a teaching example, flipper length is used to predict penguin body mass: the model produces a numerical prediction, and a loss measures how far that prediction is from the example’s target. This is an illustration of regression, not a reported experimental result. Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam’s MLVU linear-model lesson explains the model, loss, and parameter-search framing.
4. Fit the model on training examples
Fitting, or training, means searching for parameter values that improve the chosen objective on the training examples. Gradient descent is one method for searching for parameters, and it is a useful way to understand the process; it is not required for every model or training setup.

The training score describes performance on the examples used to fit the model. By itself, it does not show how well the model handles examples it has not seen.
5. Evaluate with data kept out of fitting
Set aside validation examples and do not use them to fit the model. Use this held-out data to compare candidate models or settings, asking how well each performs beyond the examples used to adjust its parameters. If you repeatedly use the same validation set to make choices, treat its score as a model-selection aid rather than independent proof of performance in every future setting.

The metric should match the task. For binary classification, accuracy is the fraction of examples classified correctly, while error is the fraction misclassified. These measures are straightforward for that setting, but they are not universal measures of quality. In spam detection or disease detection, for instance, the consequences of different mistakes may matter, so the intended outcome should guide the evaluation measure. The MLVU model-evaluation lecture defines the binary-classification measures and discusses held-out evaluation.

Compare models on the same task and evaluation data, using a measure that reflects the intended outcome. Try alternatives when the result is not suitable: the model, its settings, the data representation, or the examples may need reconsideration. Keep the held-out data out of fitting while making those comparisons.

Stop when the evidence is good enough for the intended use—not merely because one score looks high. A validation result is informative about the examples and metric used; it does not by itself establish performance in every real-world situation. The MLVU introduction presents this workflow as a useful basic recipe while noting that it does not fit every situation.
