The standard way to browse them is Tor Browser, which routes its own web traffic through the Tor network. Tor Project generally advises most users not to combine a VPN with Tor unless they are advanced and understand the configuration. A VPN is not a universal anonymity upgrade, and the available evidence does not support naming a “best” VPN for this purpose.
Is a VPN required to access the dark web?
No. Onion services are accessed through Tor, and Tor Browser is the standard client for browsing the web over Tor. Get it through the official Tor Project download page; a VPN is not a prerequisite. Tor Project explains how Tor Browser works and what it protects in its Tor Browser guidance.
“Dark web” usually refers to services that are not reachable through the ordinary web and use networks such as Tor. This article focuses on Tor onion services, not every private or hidden network. A VPN and Tor work differently: a VPN connects traffic through a VPN provider, while Tor routes it through relays. Tor Project notes that VPNs do not provide the same privacy properties as Tor. A VPN might help with a geographic access restriction, but that is a separate purpose from anonymity. See Tor Project’s VPN and Tor FAQ.
Should you use a VPN with Tor?
For most people, no—not simply because “two layers” sound safer. Tor Project generally does not recommend using a VPN with Tor unless you are an advanced user who understands how to configure both without compromising privacy. Adding a provider and another connection can make the setup harder to reason about; it does not automatically make you anonymous. Read Tor Project’s guidance on VPNs and Tor before changing the default setup.
#1 Best Overall
There is no supported basis here for ranking VPN brands for dark-web use. Choosing a VPN would require checking its current logging promises, independent audit scope and date, ownership and jurisdiction, app security and leak protections, device support, and plan and renewal terms. Those details vary and are not established by Tor Project’s general advice.
How to access onion services with Tor Browser
- Download Tor Browser from Tor Project. Use the official download page, rather than a regular browser with a proxy or an unofficial browser build.
- Open Tor Browser and connect to Tor. Use its built-in connection flow. Tor Browser routes its own web traffic through Tor; it does not automatically route every app or process on your device.
- Visit the onion address carefully. Use the address from a source you trust. Do not assume an ordinary browser can safely open an onion service or offer Tor Browser’s privacy protections.
- Check for HTTPS when available. Tor carries traffic through the network, but the connection from the exit point to a regular website may need HTTPS protection. Tor Project’s HTTPS guidance explains this distinction.
What Tor Browser does—and does not—protect
Tor Browser is designed to route its own browsing traffic through Tor and reduce some ways websites can distinguish users. It does not make every activity on a device anonymous, and it cannot prevent you from identifying yourself through your own actions. Tor Project describes the browser’s protections and limitations in its Tor Browser overview and VPN FAQ.

- Tor is free and open-source software for enabling anonymous communication.
- This is the type of programming humour or humor that makes me laugh!
- Lightweight, Classic fit, Double-needle sleeve and bottom hem
- Other apps are separate. Do not assume email clients, download tools, background services, or other browsers are using Tor just because Tor Browser is open. They require their own configuration.
- Accounts and personal details can identify you. Signing into an account tied to your identity or submitting identifying information tells that site who you are, regardless of the network path.
- Downloads can create exposure. Files opened outside Tor Browser may connect to the internet independently. Avoid treating a Tor-routed download as protection for whatever happens when you open it.
- Extra add-ons can weaken privacy. Tor Project warns against installing additional browser plugins, which can make the browser easier to identify.
- Tor has limits. It improves privacy through layered routing, but it does not guarantee that a user is untraceable or completely anonymous.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using a proxy in a regular browser as a substitute. Tor Project warns that other browsers may leak identifying information and do not include Tor Browser’s anti-fingerprinting protections.
- Torrenting over Tor. Tor Project advises against it; torrent clients can expose identifying information and create traffic that is not safely handled as ordinary Tor Browser browsing.
- Assuming a VPN covers Tor Browser or the whole device by default. The outcome depends on the actual configuration. Do not add a VPN to Tor unless you understand the implications.
- Trusting “more layers” claims. A VPN plus Tor is not automatically safer, and a VPN does not replace Tor for onion-service access.
What about Tor VPN?
Tor Project labels Tor VPN as beta and warns users not to rely on it for anything sensitive. Treat that status as a limitation, not as a recommendation for sensitive browsing. See Tor Project’s Tor VPN page.
