In desktop Chrome, you can change an extension’s access from the toolbar or set which specific websites it may access on its Details page. Choose the narrowest access that still lets the extension do its job.

Change an extension’s access to the current site or all sites

  1. Open the website where you want the extension to work.
  2. Select Extensions in the Chrome toolbar.
  3. Select More next to the extension, then point to This can read and change site data.
  4. Choose an access option:
    • When you select the extension: The extension can access the current site in the open tab or window when you select it. If you close that tab or window, select the extension again to activate access.
    • On [current site]: The extension can automatically read and change data on that site.
    • On all sites: The extension can automatically read and change data on every site.

These controls apply to websites covered by the extension’s host permissions. They do not change extensions that use VPN or proxy settings to affect lower-level network access. See Google’s instructions for managing Chrome extensions.

Allow or remove access to specific websites

  1. Select More > Extensions > Manage extensions.
  2. Find the extension and select Details.
  3. Under Permissions, find Allowed sites.
  4. To add a site, select Add and enter the site. If Add is not available, first change Allow this extension to read and change all your data on websites you visit to On specific sites.
  5. To remove a site, open the adjacent More menu and select Remove.

Google’s extension-management help describes this site-specific control on the extension’s Details page.

Choose an access level that fits the task

The toolbar offers temporary access when you select an extension, access on the current site, or access on all sites. The Details page also lets you manage a list of allowed sites. Prefer the most limited option that still supports the feature you use.

Website-data access can let an extension read, request, or modify data on pages you visit. Broad access may expose sensitive information on websites. A permission warning does not, by itself, prove an extension is dangerous; consider what access it requests and whether you trust its developer. Google advises: “Make sure you only approve extensions that you trust.” Chrome Web Store Help explains extension permissions.

Turn off or remove an extension

To stop an extension without uninstalling it, open More > Extensions > Manage extensions and use its on/off control. To uninstall it, select Remove on its management page and confirm.

Extension access is not the same as a website permission

An extension’s site-data access controls what the extension can do on websites. Permissions such as a website’s camera, microphone, or location access are separate: manage those through Privacy and security > Site settings or the site information panel. See Google’s guide to changing site settings permissions.

What to do if you cannot change the setting

A work or school browser may be managed by an administrator who can restrict Chrome features or control extensions. Look for Managed by your organization in the Chrome menu, or enter chrome://management and chrome://policy in the address bar to view management and policy information. If a policy controls the setting, contact your organization’s administrator. Google describes managed Chrome settings in its Chrome Enterprise help.

The steps above are for desktop Chrome; Google’s cited instructions do not establish the same extension-permission workflow on mobile. Menu labels and organization policies may change.
