If your Google rankings fell after a core update, first confirm the rollout dates, then wait at least one full week after it ends before judging the impact. Compare the affected pages and queries in Google Search Console, rule out technical and demand-related causes, and match your response to the scale of the decline. A ranking drop alone does not prove Google penalized your site or that a particular page element is broken.
What a core update does—and what a drop means
Google describes core updates as broad changes to its search systems, not changes aimed at particular sites or pages. Search results can shift because Google reassesses content and because the wider web changes. An update listed during the same period as your decline is useful context, but it does not establish that the update caused your site’s loss.
Start by separating a modest fluctuation from a large, persistent decline. Google’s examples include a move from position 2 to 4 as a small change and from 4 to 29 as a large one; these are illustrations, not universal thresholds. A small movement among top results usually does not justify drastic edits. A sustained decline across many pages or queries warrants a broader diagnosis.

Confirm timing and compare the right periods
- Check the rollout. Open Google’s Search Status Dashboard and note the start and end dates of any relevant ranking update. The dashboard lists notable Search issues and updates; an annotation is not proof of causation.
- Wait for the post-update comparison window. Google recommends waiting at least one full week after a core update finishes before analyzing its impact. Compare the week after rollout completion with the week before rollout began.
- Compare like with like in Search Console. Review clicks, impressions, and average position for your leading pages and queries. Where relevant, separate Web, Images, Video, and News results rather than combining different search types.
- Check a longer range for context. For broader diagnosis, compare longer periods and review query, URL, country, device, and search appearance dimensions. Google suggests using the last 16 months of Search Console data to look for yearly or seasonal patterns; this is a context window, not a recovery timetable.
Find out where the loss is concentrated
Determine whether the decline affects the whole site, a cluster of pages, or one important URL. In Search Console, compare pages that lost clicks and inspect the queries with the greatest impact. Use the Page indexing report to look for site-wide technical signals and URL Inspection to investigate selected affected pages.

- Impressions steady, clicks down: Review page titles and snippets, and consider whether competing results present a more compelling or relevant option to searchers.
- Both impressions and clicks down: Investigate broader visibility causes, including indexing, technical problems, changing demand, and site changes.
Do not make a decision from average position alone. Google advises looking at clicks and impressions as well, since a position figure is only one part of the performance picture.
Rule out causes other than the update
Google’s traffic-drop troubleshooting guide recommends checking for several other explanations before attributing a decline to a core update:

- Data anomalies: A reporting or processing issue can affect the figures you see. Check Google’s Search Console Data Anomalies page.
- Crawling, indexing, or server problems: Server availability issues, problems fetching robots.txt, not-found responses, or an unintended
noindexcan affect whether pages are crawled, indexed, or served. Review Crawl stats and Page indexing, then inspect affected URLs. - Security issues: Malware or phishing can trigger warnings or interstitial pages that reduce traffic. Check the Security Issues report in Search Console.
- Spam-policy violations or a manual action: Review Google’s spam policies and the Manual Actions report if there is reason to suspect a violation. Policy violations can lead to lower visibility or exclusion.
- Seasonality or shifting interest: Compare affected queries in Google Trends. Demand may have fallen across the web, rather than only on your site.
- A site migration or URL change: Rankings can fluctuate while Google recrawls and reindexes changed URLs. Google says a medium-sized site may take a few weeks to be noticed after a move, and larger sites can take longer.
Choose changes based on the size and cause of the decline
If the movement is small
Do not rewrite or radically alter content that remains competitive just to react to an update. Monitor the affected queries and pages, and look for a broader cause only if other metrics show a meaningful decline.
If the decline is large and sustained
Review the site as a whole as well as the pages that lost the most visibility. Google suggests asking people who are not affiliated with your site to assess the content; an outside reader may notice where another result better serves the searcher.

Use Google’s people-first content guidance as a review framework, not a ranking guarantee. Ask whether the content:
- Provides original information, research, reporting, or analysis.
- Covers the subject substantially and adds useful insight beyond the obvious.
- Offers value of its own rather than merely rewriting other sources.
- Uses clear sourcing and shows appropriate expertise.
- Helps a defined audience achieve its goal.
Make durable changes with a clear visitor benefit—for example, adding missing firsthand information or making a page easier to understand and navigate. Avoid edits based on rumors about a single ranking factor. Google says deleting content should be a last resort, considered only when it cannot be salvaged.

How long recovery can take
There is no guaranteed recovery schedule. Google says some changes can take effect in days, while broader reassessment may take several months as its systems learn and confirm that a site is producing helpful, reliable, people-first content over time. Google also says a noticeable improvement is not guaranteed. If several months pass without an effect, its guidance suggests that the site may need to wait until a later core update; smaller core updates also happen continually and can affect performance.
After making a meaningful change, give it a few weeks before assessing results in Search Console, as Google’s traffic-drop guide suggests. Track clicks and impressions alongside position so you can see whether the change improved the outcomes that matter to your site.
