Gemini Live is arriving in Gemini in Chrome on Chromebook Plus devices. Google’s rollout began in January 2026, but access is gradual, so the feature may not be available on every eligible Chromebook yet. Live lets you talk with Gemini while browsing; it is not a promise of support for every Chromebook or the standalone Gemini app.
What Gemini Live does on a Chromebook
Gemini Live is a two-way voice mode inside Gemini in Chrome. Google describes it as a way to “Engage in two-way voice conversations with Gemini Live to brainstorm ideas or prepare for meetings.” You can speak with Gemini while browsing rather than treating the feature as a separate Chromebook app. Google Workspace Updates announced the feature on February 3, 2026.
In Live, the current browser tab is shared by default. Gemini can use the content of shared tabs to respond, and you can add or remove tabs. Google says you can share up to 10 open tabs on a computer. Google’s Chromebook Help page explains tab sharing and controls.
Which Chromebooks can use Gemini Live?
Google’s stated Chromebook hardware requirement is a Chromebook Plus. The Chromebook Help page does not list standard Chromebooks as supported for Gemini in Chrome, so owning a Chromebook by itself does not establish eligibility.

- A Chromebook Plus device.
- Age 13 or older, or the applicable age in your country.
- A supported region and supported device language.
- The current version of Chrome, with Chrome signed in.
- For a work or school Google Account, administrator-enabled access.
Gemini in Chrome is unavailable in Incognito mode. There is also a separate, stricter age rule for Live: Google says users under 18 cannot use it. Meeting Gemini in Chrome’s general age requirement does not override that Live restriction. Requirements and supported regions can change; check Google’s Gemini in Chrome availability page for current availability.
How to start a Live conversation
- Open Chrome on your Chromebook Plus and sign in to Chrome.
- Select Ask Gemini. If prompted on first use, follow the opt-in steps.
- Select the Live control to begin a voice conversation.
- Review which tabs are shared. The current tab is shared by default; add or remove tabs as needed, up to Google’s stated limit of 10 open tabs on a computer.
If you do not see Ask Gemini or Live, check that your device is Chromebook Plus, Chrome is current, you are signed in, your language and region are supported, and you are not in Incognito mode. If this is a managed work or school account, ask the administrator whether access is enabled. Even when those conditions are met, Google says Gemini in Chrome is rolling out gradually, so immediate access is not guaranteed.

What the rollout announcement means
Google’s February 3, 2026 announcement said Gemini in Chrome was rolling out to Chromebook Plus devices in the U.S., with an extended rollout beginning January 28. The announcement named U.S. Workspace customers, Workspace Individual subscribers, and personal-account users signed in to the Gemini app who were at least 18 among its eligible audiences. That dated launch scope should not be treated as a complete current worldwide availability list; Google’s live availability page is the place to check changing regions and eligibility.
