Speech from thought is an umbrella term for research that decodes language-related brain activity and turns it into an output such as text or synthesized speech. It does not mean that current technology can read any private thought and speak it aloud. Studies may target internally imagined words, attempts to speak, or intended speech, and those are different tasks.
What is imagined speech?
Imagined speech generally means generating speech internally without speaking aloud or producing an acoustic signal. Researchers also use terms such as inner speech, covert speech and speech imagery. These terms overlap in the literature, but they do not necessarily describe identical experimental tasks. For an overview of the terminology and task types, see the 2025 task-oriented review of imagined-speech brain–computer interfaces.
The phrase “speech from thought” is broader than imagined speech. A system might try to identify a general intent or semantic category, distinguish phonemes or syllables, decode words, or produce sentence-level language. Those outputs represent different levels of the task, not interchangeable demonstrations of one general ability.
How do speech-decoding systems differ?
To understand what a study or device actually does, check what brain activity it records, what speech task it asks a participant to perform, and what the system is expected to output.

| Dimension | What it means |
|---|---|
| Input or task | The system may target imagined speech, attempted speech, or intended speech. Attempted or intended speech involves trying to produce a particular utterance; it is not necessarily silent, arbitrary inner monologue. |
| Linguistic target | A decoder may classify intent or meaning, identify phonemes or syllables, recognize words, or generate sentence-level language. |
| Output space | A closed-set system selects from a limited set of known choices. An open-vocabulary approach aims to handle language beyond a fixed list. Performance on a constrained set does not by itself establish unrestricted decoding. |
| Output pathway | Outputs can include text, audible synthesized speech, or another form such as facial movement. |
| Recording and setting | Studies may use non-invasive EEG or implanted neural interfaces, and may take place in laboratory research or an early feasibility trial. These contexts should not be treated as equivalent. |
These distinctions are discussed in the 2025 task-oriented review and the 2024 review of speech neuroprostheses.
Is speech from thought the same as mind-reading?
No. Research on speech brain–computer interfaces focuses on particular language-related signals and defined decoding tasks. Some speech neuroprostheses are designed to decode attempted or intended speech from people who cannot speak; that is different from recovering any thought a person happens to have. The 2024 review of the speech neuroprosthesis distinguishes internal speech from intended speech, including efforts to mime or speak aloud and imagining the intended speech output.

Nor are all thoughts speech. A decoder aimed at a participant’s attempted utterance should not be described as extracting unrestricted inner monologue. Any claim about a system should specify the task, participant context, recording method and output.
What can current speech brain–computer interfaces do?
Reviews describe research that transforms neural activity into text or sound, including studies with implanted participants and early feasibility trials involving people with paralysis. The 2024 review describes restoration of natural speech as a long-term goal. A 2025 review of speech brain–computer interfaces surveys decoding approaches and clinical applications while identifying challenges to clinical use.

This is evidence of progress in research and medical neuroprostheses—not evidence of a general consumer product that reads arbitrary thoughts. A review of EEG-based imagined-speech decoding describes an active research area working toward clinical applicability; it does not establish that a consumer EEG headset can turn a person’s thoughts into words or speech. See the 2025 systematic review of EEG-based imagined-speech decoding.
What does the figure of 104 reports mean?
A 2025 systematic literature review by A. Tates, A. Matran-Fernandez, S. Halder and I. Daly selected 104 reports that attempted to decode speech imagery from neural activity. That number describes the review’s scope; it is not a count of successful devices, clinically validated systems, or products available to consumers. See the review in the Journal of Neural Engineering.

What should you look for in a claim?
- Task: Does it concern imagined, attempted or intended speech?
- Target: Is the output a category, sound unit, word or sentence?
- Constraints: Does the system choose from a closed list, or attempt open-vocabulary decoding?
- Method and setting: Was activity recorded with EEG or an implanted interface, and was the work experimental or part of a feasibility trial?
- Output: Does the study produce text, synthesized speech or another output?
Without those details, a headline about “speech from thought” can make a narrow research result sound like unrestricted mind-reading.
