The platforms reportedly disabled or seized accounts and reclaimed stolen accounts; the coverage does not establish that the action ended the market.
What happened on February 4, 2021?
Contemporaneous reports described a coordinated platform action against accounts connected to members of OGUsers, a forum associated with trading hacked accounts and desirable usernames. KrebsOnSecurity characterized the action as involving hundreds of accounts across platforms, but did not provide a definitive combined total: KrebsOnSecurity’s February 4, 2021 report.
CyberScoop reported that Facebook removed about 400 Instagram accounts. That was a company-attributed figure relayed by the publication, not an independently verified total, and it should not be read as the count for all platforms. What was OGUsers, and what accounts were traded?
Reporting described OGUsers as a forum or marketplace where hacked accounts and desirable usernames were bought and sold. Short usernames could carry status or resale value, making them targets for theft and a commodity for traffickers.

The accounts were not necessarily obtained by one method. KrebsOnSecurity reported that Facebook described tactics including hacking, coercion, extortion, sextortion, SIM swapping and swatting. The reporting does not establish that every stolen account involved any particular tactic—or that each account involved all of them.
What enforcement did the platforms report?
The accounts were reportedly seized or disabled, and stolen accounts were reclaimed. KrebsOnSecurity reported that Twitter confirmed working with Facebook to seize accounts tied to top OGUsers members; Twitter cited its platform manipulation and spam policy in describing its action.

WIRED reported that enforcement also included cease-and-desist letters sent to known hackers, alongside efforts to reclaim accounts. These are descriptions of the 2021 action, not statements of current platform policy: WIRED’s February 4, 2021 report.
CyberScoop quoted an unnamed Facebook spokesperson: “They harass, extort and cause harm to the Instagram community, and we will continue to do all we can to make it difficult for them to profit from Instagram usernames.” The article identifies the speaker only as a Facebook spokesperson.

Did the takedown end OGUsers account trafficking?
The reporting documents an enforcement action, not a permanent shutdown or a measured long-term result. It does not establish that account trafficking stopped, quantify how much the action reduced it, or provide a definitive all-platform account count. It also does not establish arrests, convictions or later legal outcomes. The sound conclusion is limited: platforms reported taking action against accounts linked to traffickers, while the lasting effect is not established by these reports.
