If an external SSD does not appear on a Steam Deck or ROG Ally, first connect it directly with a known-good data cable, then check whether the device is visible to the operating system. On the ROG Ally, Disk Management can distinguish a missing drive letter or an offline disk from a device Windows cannot see. On Steam Deck, the available official guidance here does not establish a required filesystem or an external-SSD formatting procedure, so do not format a drive just to troubleshoot detection.

1. Rule out the cable, port, hub, or dock

Disconnect unnecessary peripherals and connect the SSD directly to the handheld, bypassing any hub or dock. Inspect the USB-C plugs, cable, and port for damage or looseness. If possible, flip the connector, try another port, and test with another cable that supports data transfer.

ASUS recommends checking for cable or port damage, trying the USB device on another computer, and connecting directly rather than through a USB-C docking hub. Its Windows 10/11 guidance also notes that a dock may not supply enough power for a connected device. ASUS USB Type-C troubleshooting

  • Works directly but not through the hub: investigate the hub, dock, cable, and power supply. A powered USB-C hub is worth considering only if the direct-connection test points to the current hub or its power.
  • Fails on the handheld but works on another computer: focus on the handheld’s port, operating-system recognition, or hub setup.
  • Fails on multiple hosts with a known-good data cable: a fault in the SSD or its enclosure becomes more likely. ASUS recommends contacting the USB device’s manufacturer if it still fails on another computer.

2. If you have a ROG Ally, check Disk Management

Windows may recognize a disk without showing it in File Explorer. Check its state before making changes: right-click Start, open Computer Management as an administrator, and select Disk Management. ASUS’s SSD troubleshooting steps cover Windows 10/11 PCs, including gaming handhelds. ASUS SSD troubleshooting

Disk is Online but has no drive letter

Right-click the relevant volume and choose Change Drive Letter and Paths, then add a drive letter. This can make an existing accessible volume show up in File Explorer; it is different from creating or formatting a volume.

Disk shows as Unallocated

Do not create a new volume if the SSD may contain files you need. ASUS’s New Simple Volume step is conditional on the space being known to be empty. Partition or format changes can make existing data inaccessible; back up first when possible and do not proceed if you are unsure what the disk contains.

Disk does not appear in Disk Management

Disk Management cannot fix a device Windows has not enumerated. Continue with the Device Manager check below, then repeat the direct-connection and another-host tests.

3. If Windows does not recognize the ROG Ally SSD

Open Device Manager and expand Disk drives. If the SSD entry is disabled, enable it. ASUS also describes uninstalling the device entry and restarting Windows so it can reinstall the driver; use that step only when the correct device is identified. Check for available driver updates and keep Windows packages and BIOS current using ASUS guidance. ASUS SSD troubleshooting

ASUS also describes running solid-state-drive diagnostics in MyASUS when the product supports that feature. The diagnostic page is not available on every product, so its absence does not by itself establish that the SSD is faulty.

4. Steam Deck: do not assume an external SSD needs ext4

Valve’s FAQ says Steam Deck formats microSD cards as “ext4 with casefolding.” That statement is specifically about microSD cards, not external USB SSDs, and the FAQ does not provide a filesystem requirement or a mounting or formatting procedure for external SSDs. Steam Deck FAQ

Valve describes docking as similar to plugging a USB-C hub into a PC. That explains the connection arrangement, but does not establish that an external SSD is mounted or formatted correctly. Preserve the drive’s existing contents: do not reformat it as an initial detection fix. If it contains data and filesystem changes seem necessary, use a Deck-specific official procedure or qualified support rather than guessing.

5. When to escalate

If the SSD remains missing after a direct connection, a different data-capable cable, another host, and the relevant operating-system checks, contact the handheld maker and the SSD or enclosure manufacturer. A drive that also fails on another computer points more strongly toward a device-side issue than a single handheld test.

For ROG Ally, ASUS documents two ways to enter BIOS: hold the volume-down button while powering on, or use Windows Settings > Recovery > Advanced Startup > Restart now > Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > UEFI Firmware Settings. This is an access route, not evidence that a normal external data SSD should appear in BIOS. ROG Ally FAQ
