There is no crewed mission planned to Jupiter or another gas giant, and Jupiter itself is a profoundly hostile place for people. It has no solid surface to land on, its atmosphere becomes hotter and more pressurized with depth, and the region around it has intense radiation. A future crew might conceivably travel through the wider Jupiter system, but that is different from visiting the planet—and no reliable source establishes if or when such a trip will happen.
Why astronauts cannot land on Jupiter like they could on Mars
Jupiter is a gas giant, not a world with a rocky crust beneath its clouds. NASA explains that it “doesn’t have a true surface.” Its visible cloud tops are not solid ground, so there is no conventional landing site.
Descending into Jupiter would mean entering its atmosphere, where conditions grow more severe with depth. NASA says temperature and pressure increase, eventually crushing, melting, and vaporizing spacecraft. That makes a crewed descent with known technology an entirely different—and far more dangerous—undertaking than landing on a planet with a solid surface.
Jupiter’s atmosphere is mostly hydrogen and helium. Any pressure or composition figures for the planet depend on the level being measured; there is no single solid “surface” pressure to use as a straightforward equivalent to a rocky planet’s surface conditions. NASA’s Jupiter facts describes its structure and atmospheric hazards.

Radiation makes the Jupiter system dangerous, too
Jupiter’s powerful magnetic field creates a harsh radiation environment. NASA says Europa, one of Jupiter’s moons, orbits within a band of powerful radiation generated by that field. That is a significant engineering and safety challenge for spacecraft, although the NASA mission descriptions do not provide a human radiation-dose estimate.
Radiation around Jupiter is a separate problem from entering the planet’s atmosphere. A crew travelling in the system would need to contend with the local environment; a crew attempting to descend into Jupiter would also face increasing atmospheric pressure and temperature.
What the current mission to Jupiter is actually doing
NASA’s Europa Clipper is a robotic spacecraft, not a crewed mission. It launched on October 14, 2024, and is planned to reach Jupiter in 2030. Rather than landing on Europa or entering Jupiter’s atmosphere, it will orbit Jupiter and make repeated close flybys of Europa.
The mission will use cameras, spectrometers, ice-penetrating radar, and measurements of magnetic fields and gravity to study Europa’s surface and interior. Its purpose is to investigate whether the moon has environments that could support life—not to detect life itself. See NASA’s Europa Clipper mission overview and NASA’s Jupiter exploration page for mission details and schedule.

Visiting Jupiter is not the same as visiting one of its moons
Europa is a moon in the Jupiter system, not part of Jupiter’s atmosphere. A future crewed mission to Europa or another moon would count as visiting the system, but it would not mean astronauts had landed on or entered Jupiter. For Europa specifically, the cited NASA mission is robotic and uses flybys; it does not plan a landing.
| Destination | What a visit would mean | Known challenge | Current status in NASA’s cited material |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jupiter | Entering its atmosphere; there is no solid surface for a conventional landing. | Pressure and temperature rise with depth, and the atmosphere is hazardous to spacecraft. | No crewed visit is planned. |
| Europa | Visiting a solid icy moon in the Jupiter system, rather than the planet. | Europa lies in a powerful radiation environment around Jupiter. | Europa Clipper is conducting a robotic investigation through repeated flybys; no human mission is described. |
Could people travel to the Jupiter system someday?
“Ever” cannot be answered with a dependable yes or no. The absence of a planned crewed mission does not prove that one will never happen, but the available NASA material offers no schedule or prediction for astronauts visiting Jupiter. Any claim that people will reach the system by a particular year—or that it is impossible forever—would go beyond the evidence.

A distant human mission would face several distinct questions: how to get a crew to the Jupiter system, how to protect them from radiation, and where they could safely work or stay. Those questions are not solved by robotic exploration, and a possible future journey to a moon would not make Jupiter’s atmosphere a viable landing destination.
