Yes. Nintendo says a microSD Express card works in the original Nintendo Switch, but it will not make the console read or write card data faster than a standard microSD card. Express is useful if you also need the card for a Switch 2; for storage only on the original Switch, a standard card is sufficient.
How microSD Express performs in the original Switch
The original Switch accepts microSD Express cards, but its card reader does not take advantage of Express speeds. Nintendo states that data reading and writing on a Switch console will be equivalent to that of a standard microSD card when using an Express card. Nintendo’s compatibility guidance therefore describes compatibility, not a performance upgrade.
Which card should you choose?
| What you need | Suitable card | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Extra storage for the original Switch only | Standard microSD, microSDHC, or microSDXC | Express is not faster in the original Switch. Nintendo recommends UHS-I cards with transfer speeds of 60–95 MB/sec in its microSD Card FAQ. |
| One card to use with the original Switch and Switch 2 | microSD Express | It works in the original Switch at standard microSD-equivalent speed. Switch 2 requires microSD Express for card storage. |
Choose based on whether you need Switch 2 compatibility, along with capacity and price. Nintendo’s cited guidance does not establish current prices, so compare the cards available to you rather than assuming Express costs a particular amount more.
Capacity and first use
Nintendo supports microSD Express cards up to 2TB. The first time you use an Express card, the console requires an internet system update. Nintendo lists a Samsung microSD Express Card 256GB for Switch 2, with a release date of June 5, 2025; it is sold separately on Nintendo’s Store.

- EXPONENTIALLY FASTER PERFORMANCE. Up to 4.4 times faster transfer speeds than our fastest microSD UHS-I cards [9]. Transfer a 2-hour HD movie in less than 3.5 seconds [1]; save up to 2.8 minutes transferring 60 minutes of 4K UHD video [4] shot at 30 fps when paired with the SanDisk PRO-READER SD Express Dual Card (sold separately) [9]
- DURABILITY YOU CAN COUNT ON: Cards are waterproof, temperature-proof, humidity-proof, drop-proof, shock-proof, magnetic-proof, x-ray proof, and wear-out proof [5].
- HEAT MANAGEMENT REIMAGINED. SanDisk ThermAdapt helps keep devices from overheating with a specially designed enclosure and controller that uses dynamic adaptive thermal management.
What you can store on a card
A microSD card can store downloadable software, software update data, downloadable content, screenshots, and captured videos. It does not store game save data: Nintendo says saves remain in system memory and cannot be copied or saved to a microSD card. Nintendo’s FAQ explains the supported card types and storage behavior.
