Start by checking what the Switch shows: a missing network name, a grayed-out network, or a network that appears but fails its connection test. Those symptoms point to different fixes. On the console, go to System Settings > Internet > Internet Settings, then follow the matching steps below.
If your Wi-Fi network does not appear
Search nearby and reduce interference
- Place the Switch close to the router and open System Settings > Internet > Internet Settings. Let it scan, then press Y to search again if your network is missing. Nintendo recommends testing within about 10 feet for setup and roughly 10–15 feet during troubleshooting. See Nintendo’s missing-network troubleshooting steps.
- Restart the Switch. Move it and the router away from potential interference, including metal objects, speakers, power strips, glass, and cordless phones.
- Check whether the network name is hidden. A hidden SSID will not show in a normal scan. If you know the network name, password, and security settings, use manual setup as described in Nintendo’s wireless setup instructions.
Check compatibility if the network is still missing
Nintendo lists Switch wireless support for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, 802.11b/g/n/ac, and WEP, WPA-PSK (AES), and WPA2-PSK (AES). A network name shown in gray indicates an unsupported security type. Before changing router security settings, ask the router maker or ISP for guidance; changing them can affect other devices.
If the network appears but the connection test fails
Check whether the problem is the Switch or the home connection
- Test internet access on another device using the same Wi-Fi. If that device also cannot get online, inspect modem and router connections, then unplug the equipment for at least 30 seconds. Reconnect it and wait for its lights to stabilize. If internet access still fails, contact your ISP, router manufacturer, or network administrator. See Nintendo’s network internet connection troubleshooting.
- If other devices work, retry the Switch close to the router. Weak signal and interference can disrupt the connection even when the network is visible.
- If your router broadcasts both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, try the other band from Internet Settings.
Use the error code to narrow down the cause
Nintendo’s guidance for error codes 2160-8006 and 2160-8007 lists DNS settings, slow internet, interference, and weak signal as possible causes. Check whether DNS is set to manual when your home network does not require a specific address. For an ordinary home setup, use automatic DNS unless your network administrator has told you otherwise. Nintendo describes alternate DNS as a diagnostic option, not a universal repair; its guidance notes that Google public DNS is subject to Google’s terms. See Nintendo’s guidance for errors 2160-8006 and 2160-8007.
If the Switch still cannot connect
Try connecting at another location or to another wireless network. If the Switch cannot detect any access points in multiple locations, contact Nintendo Support. If it connects elsewhere but not at home, the home router or internet service is the more likely place to investigate; contact your ISP or router manufacturer.
