Oasis showed that an AI model could generate a Minecraft-like scene that responds to player controls—but its 2024 demonstration was a short, unstable proof of concept, not Minecraft and not evidence that AI-generated video can replace conventional game engines. It revealed an intriguing direction for interactive video generation while leaving major questions about consistency, image quality, session length, and practical performance unanswered.
What Oasis is—and what it is not
Oasis was a Minecraft-like AI-generated game demo associated with Decart and chip startup Etched. It was presented in 2024 as a proof of concept for interactive video generation, not as the commercial game Minecraft. The reports do not establish any connection that would make buying Minecraft a way to access Oasis.

The distinction matters: Oasis generated a changing visual scene in response to inputs, but that is not the same as running a fully coded game world with reliably persistent objects, rules, and geometry. The demonstration suggested one possible way to make interactive worlds; it did not show that arbitrary games could already be generated reliably.
How the interactive video generation worked
MIT Technology Review described Oasis as using next-frame prediction. The model was trained on Minecraft gameplay clips and associated player actions, then generated successive frames in response to user inputs. This is the report’s account of the system, not an independent technical audit or reproduced benchmark.

In the demo, players could perform familiar actions such as moving, jumping, breaking blocks, and placing blocks. Coverage also described landscapes and objects changing or morphing as players moved or looked away. An option to begin from an uploaded image was described in the ISPR roundup’s reproduced coverage. These features made the experience recognizable as a game, while its instability made it difficult to treat as a dependable building world.
What the 2024 demonstration could—and could not—show
Contemporary reports described low resolution, frequent hallucinations, unstable landscapes, and sessions lasting only minutes. Those limitations are central to judging the demo: a scene can react to controls and still fail to preserve a coherent world long enough for sustained play.

This is a conceptual comparison, not a controlled test of Oasis against a named game. It shows the difference between generating frames that respond to inputs and demonstrating a persistent, polished game—not a universal verdict on either approach.

Why the companies saw a larger possibility
Decart cofounder and CEO Dean Leitersdorf described the ambition this way: “Your screen can turn into a portal—into some imaginary world that doesn’t need to be coded, that can be changed on the fly. And that’s really what we’re trying to target here.” That is a statement of the company’s goal, not a capability established by the demo.
The broader idea is appealing: if a system could generate coherent scenes in response to both prompts and player actions, it might make interactive worlds easier to alter or create. But Oasis did not establish that such worlds could be arbitrary, high-fidelity, persistent, or dependable. Those remain aspirations rather than demonstrated results in the cited coverage.

What the reported hardware claims mean
The demo used Nvidia cards. Etched’s Sohu accelerator was still in development in the reporting, and the company claimed it could deliver a tenfold performance gain. That figure was unsubstantiated in the report and should not be treated as a measured result or an available consumer upgrade.
NYU Tandon professor Siddharth Garg said custom AI chips could offer performance and energy-efficiency gains, but also said he was “very skeptical about a 10x improvement just from smarter or more specialized design.” Etched cofounder and COO Robert Wachen described the company’s design as “much more specialized than all of the chips out on the market today”; that is a vendor statement, not independent validation of performance. The reporting gives no consumer model or reader hardware requirement for accessing Oasis.

What to take away from the demo
Oasis made real-time video generation interactive enough to resemble a simple game: players could act, and the generated scene responded. Its reported instability, low resolution, and brief sessions also showed why that is not yet equivalent to a reliable game world. The 2024 proof of concept points to a possible future for interactive video generation, but it does not demonstrate that AI-generated video is ready to replace coded game engines.
