The Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 is the newer platform, but benchmark aggregates do not show it winning every workload: AnTuTu 11 totals are nearly even, Geekbench 6 CPU averages favor the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2, and one listed graphics test favors Gen 4. These scores come from pooled phone results, not a controlled test of otherwise identical devices, so the best choice depends on the handset as well as the chip.

At a glance: which chip is newer?

Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 in March 2023 and the Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 on May 15, 2025. Gen 4 is newer; the “Plus” in the older chip’s name does not establish that it is faster in every task, and the newer generation does not guarantee a win in every benchmark.

Qualcomm’s launch comparisons describe each platform relative to its own predecessor. They are not direct, independent measurements of the 7+ Gen 2 against the 7 Gen 4.

These are platform capabilities, not guarantees that every phone using a chip implements every feature. For example, a handset maker’s design and regional model can affect which connectivity, charging, camera, or gaming functions are available. Qualcomm’s product information is available for the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 and Snapdragon 7 Gen 4.

Benchmark comparison

The following figures are NanoReview comparison-page aggregates reported at the time of the comparison. Counts indicate the number of test results listed for each chip where available; they are not controlled tests on a matched pair of phones.

Benchmark Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 What the result suggests
AnTuTu 11 1,317,007 (52 tests) 1,329,936 (38 tests) Close totals; Gen 4 is about 1% higher in this aggregate.
Geekbench 6 single-core 1,654 (51 tests) 1,270 (17 tests) The displayed aggregate favors 7+ Gen 2 for single-core CPU performance.
Geekbench 6 multi-core 4,217 (51 tests) 4,106 (17 tests) The displayed aggregate also favors 7+ Gen 2, by a smaller margin.
3DMark Steel Nomad Light 614; 98% stability listed 667; 98% stability listed Gen 4 leads this listed graphics test; it does not establish performance in every game or sustained thermal scenario.
Geekbench 6 Compute 4,189 6,746 This is a GPU compute score, not a CPU score or a direct measure of game frame rates.

Benchmark aggregates vary across databases. For example, 91mobiles lists an AnTuTu score of 1,457,989 for a Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 example, rather than NanoReview’s aggregate total. The databases use different samples and methods, so their scores should not be averaged or treated as interchangeable. See the NanoReview comparison and 91mobiles comparison.

What Qualcomm’s performance claims mean

At launch, Qualcomm said the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 offered over 50% higher CPU performance, 2x GPU performance, and up to 13% better system power efficiency in its stated predecessor comparison. For the Snapdragon 7 Gen 4, Qualcomm claimed 27% higher CPU performance, 30% faster GPU rendering, and 65% improved AI performance over its predecessor.

Those percentages use different launch contexts and are vendor claims, not a head-to-head comparison between these two chips. Qualcomm’s announcements provide the original context: 7+ Gen 2 launch announcement and 7 Gen 4 launch announcement.

How to choose between phones using these chips

For everyday CPU responsiveness

The Geekbench 6 aggregate in this comparison favors the older 7+ Gen 2 in both single-core and multi-core results. The sample counts differ, however, and phone cooling, firmware, and power limits can change results. Treat this as a signal to compare specific phones rather than proof that every 7+ Gen 2 phone will feel faster.

For gaming and graphics

Gen 4 scores higher in the listed Steel Nomad Light result, while its Geekbench 6 Compute score is also higher. Compute is not a game benchmark, and one graphics test cannot predict frame rates across games, graphics APIs, or long sessions. Look for sustained gaming tests on the actual phone models you are considering.

For connectivity, camera, and platform extras

Gen 4’s cited platform highlights include Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, XPAN audio, Release 17 5G, and AI-enabled camera processing. The 7+ Gen 2 product information specifies an X62 modem with peak downloads up to 4.4 Gbps, an 18-bit Spectra ISP, and Quick Charge 5 support. Confirm the specific handset supports and exposes the feature you want; chip capability alone does not settle implementation.

For a purchase decision

Examples listed by 91mobiles include the POCO F5, Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 Turbo, and realme GT Neo 5 SE with the 7+ Gen 2, and the OPPO Reno16 5G and Motorola Edge 70 with Gen 4. This is not an exhaustive or globally current catalog. Verify the exact regional model and chipset, along with memory, storage, software support, price, and availability. Cooling, battery capacity, display, and firmware can matter more to the experience than a small difference in aggregate scores.

Verdict

Choose based on the complete phone, not the chipset name alone. The Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 is newer and leads the cited Steel Nomad Light and AnTuTu 11 aggregates, while the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 leads the cited Geekbench 6 CPU aggregates. The available scores are useful indicators, not a controlled comparison that establishes one universal winner.
