Meta announced WhatsApp usernames on June 29, 2026, with reservations opening that week and feature availability planned for later in 2026. The rollout is gradual; Meta’s announcement and current help material do not give a date when every user worldwide will have access. A reserved username becomes active when the feature launches in the account’s region.
When will WhatsApp usernames roll out to everyone?
Meta said usernames would roll out gradually over the coming months and that WhatsApp would notify people in the app when the feature became available in their country. Its consumer help material says a reservation is not the same as activation: the username becomes active when the feature launches in the user’s region. The cited official sources do not set a universal completion date, so “2026” is the announced planned launch period, not confirmation that rollout is complete in every market. Check WhatsApp’s current in-app availability and help information for your country.
Meta said WhatsApp has over three billion people on the service when explaining why it opened reservations ahead of the launch. That is Meta’s figure from its June 29, 2026 announcement, not an independently audited count or a stated monthly-active-user figure.
What a WhatsApp username changes
For personal accounts, usernames are optional and are intended to let someone start a conversation without first seeing the other person’s phone number. Meta says that when a person has enabled a username, a new person or business messaging them for the first time will no longer see their phone number. This describes first-time contact; it does not mean phone numbers disappear from existing chats, account records, or business profiles.

Meta describes the feature as a privacy measure. WhatsApp vice president of product Alice Newton-Rex told the Associated Press, “We have designed this as a core privacy feature.” Usernames do not make users searchable in a browsable public directory: Meta says there will be no directory or suggestions, and a person needs the exact username to contact someone for the first time.
Optional username key
Meta also describes an optional username key that a user can require from people trying to message them by username. It provides an additional control over who can reach the account. The announcement does not say that using a username alone automatically allows unsolicited messages.

How to reserve a username
- Update WhatsApp to the latest version.
- Open Settings > Account > Username.
- Follow the in-app instructions to reserve an available username.
These are the reservation steps in Meta’s June 29 announcement. A successful reservation does not make the username active immediately; activation depends on the feature launching in your region.

WhatsApp Business usernames are optional and unique. A business display name does not have to be unique, so the username and display name serve different purposes. The WhatsApp Business Platform help page says customers can start chats without needing the business phone number, but both the username and phone number appear on the business profile.

A username is unique to a phone number. A business operating multiple numbers therefore needs a different username for each number, even if it uses the same display name. Business availability is also gradual and may not yet extend to every account.
Business Platform integrations
Twilio’s WhatsApp documentation references username support and Business-Scoped User IDs. Businesses using the WhatsApp Business Platform should review their own provider’s documentation and check how their systems associate conversations with customers. Twilio’s documentation does not establish that every provider implements usernames in the same way, or that every business must change its systems.
