Memory chip prices rise when demand for DRAM and NAND outpaces the industry’s ability to add usable manufacturing capacity. For Micron, higher average selling prices helped lift its consolidated gross margin to 85% in fiscal Q3 2026, but product mix and manufacturing execution also mattered. That margin is Micron’s result for one fiscal quarter—not an industry average or a promise of future profitability.
What drives memory chip prices?
Memory prices are cyclical because supply cannot always adjust as quickly as demand. When customers need more memory than manufacturers can produce, buyers compete for available output and average selling prices can rise. If manufacturers later add enough capacity—or demand weakens—the balance can reverse and prices can fall.
Micron said in its Form 10-Q for the quarter ended May 28, 2026, that AI-led data-center demand for memory and storage was growing faster than Micron and the industry could increase supply. The company linked robust demand and constrained supply for both DRAM and NAND with higher prices and improved profitability. That is Micron’s description of conditions at the time, not an independent measure of every producer’s supply or pricing.
Supply is more than the number of chips already in warehouses. It depends on manufacturing capacity, production yields, technology transitions, and how manufacturers allocate wafers and cleanroom space among products. New capacity takes time and investment to bring into production, while a shift in customer demand or product allocation can change the amount of a particular kind of memory available.

Why can DRAM and NAND prices move differently?
DRAM and NAND serve different roles and have distinct product mixes and shipment patterns. DRAM is used for working memory, including in data-center systems and personal computers; NAND is used for storage. Their prices and the number of bits shipped therefore need not move in lockstep. Micron’s fiscal Q3 2026 results show why it is useful to look at price and shipment volume separately.
| Micron fiscal Q3 2026, year over year | Sales change | Average selling price change | Bit shipment change |
|---|---|---|---|
| DRAM | Up 343% | Up in the low-260% range | Up in the low-20% range |
| NAND | Up 361% | Up in the mid-310% range | Up in the low-double-digit range |
These are Micron’s year-over-year changes for the fiscal quarter ended May 28, 2026, as reported in its Form 10-Q. The filing says average selling price increases were the primary driver of the DRAM and NAND sales increases; higher bit shipments also contributed. The figures describe Micron’s business and product mix, not a universal price index for either memory type.
For any memory producer, sales can change because it sells more bits, receives a higher average price per bit, or sells a different mix of products. A retail DDR5 desktop RAM kit is a finished consumer product; its shelf price is not the same as a manufacturer’s wholesale contract price and does not reveal Micron’s margin.

How does AI demand affect memory prices?
AI data centers use memory and storage, so faster investment in those systems can increase demand for memory products. If the resulting demand grows faster than manufacturers can add supply, buyers may pay more and manufacturers may earn more per bit sold. Micron attributed the supply-demand imbalance it described in fiscal Q3 2026 to AI-led data-center growth, but future demand—and its effect on prices—depends on customer investment and available supply.
HBM changes the capacity equation
High-bandwidth memory (HBM) is a stacked DRAM architecture designed to provide high bandwidth. Micron says that, at the same technology node, its more complex manufacturing process uses more wafers and cleanroom space to produce the same number of bits as conventional DRAM. As a result, strong HBM production can use capacity that might otherwise have produced other DRAM.
This makes product allocation relevant to conventional DRAM supply as well as HBM availability. Micron warns that if HBM demand weakens and capacity shifts toward conventional DRAM, the added conventional DRAM supply could put pressure on its prices.

Why were Micron’s profit margins so high?
Gross margin is gross profit expressed as a share of revenue: revenue left after the cost of goods sold, divided by revenue. It is not the same as net profit, which also reflects expenses outside the cost of producing and selling the products. When selling prices rise faster than manufacturing costs, gross margin can expand sharply because more of each sales dollar remains after product costs.
Micron reported consolidated gross margin of 85% in fiscal Q3 2026, compared with 74% in Q2 2026 and 38% in Q3 2025. It attributed the sequential improvement chiefly to higher average selling prices, and also cited strong execution and favorable product mix. Those are distinct influences: prices affect revenue per bit, mix affects which products contribute to sales, and execution affects how efficiently the company manufactures and delivers them.

Micron reported that Q3 2026 revenue rose 74% sequentially and 346% year over year. Revenue growth alone does not determine margin: a company can sell much more while earning less per dollar if costs rise, lower-margin products make up a larger share, or production execution deteriorates. Conversely, strong pricing can lift revenue and margin together when costs do not rise as quickly.

Manufacturing execution and cost per bit
Manufacturers can improve economics by producing more bits per wafer as technology advances and by reducing the cost to manufacture each bit. Results also depend on yields, how intensively facilities are used, production ramp efficiency, technology integration, and capital spending. Micron identifies process and product investment, efficient infrastructure utilization, advanced technology integration, and efficient capital expenditure as important to its success. A selling-price increase is therefore not the only reason a memory company’s margin changes.

Micron describes multi-year strategic customer agreements as take-or-pay commitments for specified volumes. Most have fixed pricing or minimum and maximum price bands; some use market-based pricing. The agreements can improve customers’ supply assurance and give Micron greater visibility into supply commitments and business performance, but they do not all remove exposure to market prices.
Micron management has said that margins supported by floor prices in these agreements are well above prior cycle peaks. That is the company’s characterization, not an independently verified guarantee that the contracts will produce a particular margin or prevent results from changing.

What could make memory prices and margins fall again?
Memory prices can weaken if manufacturers increase supply faster than customers increase purchases. Micron identifies excess worldwide supply without matching demand as a risk to average selling prices. The company also cites competition and aggressive competitor pricing, changes in customer demand, technology shifts, and uncertainty about long-term generative-AI demand.
- Supply catches up: New output or better production yields can add bits to the market. If demand does not keep pace, average prices can decline.
- Demand cools or changes: Customers may invest less, delay purchases, or shift toward different products. Strong demand in one category does not guarantee equal pricing strength in another.
- HBM demand weakens: Capacity reallocated from HBM to conventional DRAM could increase conventional DRAM supply and pressure its prices.
- Costs or mix turn less favorable: Higher manufacturing costs, weaker execution, or a shift toward products with less favorable economics can reduce gross margin even if revenue remains substantial.
Micron’s fiscal 2026 results and fiscal 2027 outlook statement reflect management’s expectations, not settled outcomes. Its unusually high Q3 2026 gross margin belongs to a specific company and quarter; it should be read alongside the supply cycle, product mix, production costs, and the possibility that demand or pricing changes.
