Netflix has a different catalogue in each country, so a show or movie available at home may be missing when you travel—or may not be offered in your country at all. The usual causes are regional licensing and release timing, but profile settings, a VPN, or Netflix detecting the wrong location can also affect what you see.
Why Netflix catalogues differ by country
Netflix acquires rights to many titles by territory, and those rights may be limited to certain countries or to a set period. A studio or distributor may control the rights, another service may have an exclusive, or the rights may simply not be available to Netflix in a particular region. Netflix also considers regional popularity when deciding which titles to offer. Netflix explains how its catalogues vary by country.
That applies to some Netflix Originals, too. A title carrying the Netflix name is not necessarily available worldwide: another company may hold the rights in a particular territory, or the title may be from before Netflix could acquire exclusive rights everywhere. Licensed titles can also disappear when their availability window ends. Netflix lists rights and release timing among reasons a title may be unavailable.
What can make a title disappear?
A missing title does not, by itself, reveal the cause. Check these possibilities before assuming Netflix has a technical problem:

- Regional rights: Netflix may not have the right to offer the title in your country, or another service may hold an exclusive there.
- Release timing: The title may not have been released in your country yet.
- Availability window: A licensed title may have left Netflix after its regional rights expired.
- Profile restrictions: A maturity setting or blocked-title setting can keep a programme from appearing or playing.
- Profile language: Netflix may filter what it displays based on the language settings on your profile.
- VPN use: Netflix may show a narrower set of titles if it detects a VPN connection.
Netflix outlines these catalogue, profile, and location-related possibilities in its title availability troubleshooting guidance.
Why a VPN can change the catalogue you see
A VPN can make your device or network appear to connect from a different location. If Netflix detects one, it may limit the displayed catalogue to titles it has licensed worldwide; it does not follow that the VPN will unlock another country’s catalogue. To see the titles available in your actual region, Netflix’s advice is to turn off the VPN. Netflix also says VPNs are not supported for live events or ad-supported viewing. Read its VPN viewing guidance for details.

Fix a Netflix location or region error
If Netflix cannot determine your country, it may show a region error. A VPN can contribute, but travel, a recent move, or network location detection can also affect what Netflix thinks your location is. Try the steps that fit your situation:
- Turn off any VPN. Disconnect it on the device and, if applicable, on the router or network you are using.
- If you have travelled or recently moved, sign out and back in. Netflix recommends this to refresh the device’s location information. Your catalogue may differ from the one you had before travelling.
- If the location still looks wrong, check Netflix’s detected country. On the affected network, visit fast.com and select “Show more info” to view the client country Netflix uses for troubleshooting.
- Review network settings. Check whether a VPN, proxy, or unusual network configuration is affecting the connection. Netflix’s country or region error steps explain the checks it recommends.
- Contact your internet service provider if the detected country remains incorrect. Netflix’s guidance says the ISP may need to investigate the network’s location information.
What happens to Netflix downloads while travelling?
Downloads have regional limits too. Netflix says an iPhone or iPad download may not play in a country where the title is unavailable because of licensing. You may need to connect from a country where Netflix offers the title; that is often the country where you downloaded it. See Netflix’s download availability guidance if a saved title will not play.

Which causes can you fix?
| Possible cause | What to try | Can a settings change restore the title? |
|---|---|---|
| Rights unavailable or an expired licensing window | Check whether the title is offered in your country; wait for a release only if Netflix has announced one. | Usually not. Device settings cannot grant Netflix regional rights. |
| Release date has not arrived in your country | Check Netflix’s title information or announcements for local timing. | No, unless the issue is actually a profile or location setting. |
| Maturity limit, blocked title, or profile language | Review the profile’s maturity and blocked-title settings, and its language. | Possibly, if a profile setting is the reason it is hidden. |
| VPN detected | Turn off the VPN and reload Netflix. | It may restore the catalogue available in your real region, not guarantee access to a foreign catalogue. |
| Netflix detects the wrong country | Refresh your session after travel, check the detected country and network configuration, and contact your ISP if needed. | Possibly; it depends on whether the problem is a stale session or network location data. |
| Downloaded title unavailable at destination | Check whether the title is licensed in the country you are visiting. | Not if the destination lacks the necessary rights. |
Netflix’s account-country guidance says the country associated with an account changes only when the member moves. Travelling can change the catalogue available to watch without changing the account country.
