Sony is using AI in several distinct ways, from anime-production research and subtitle synchronization to internal game-development workflows and a player-facing racing feature. These efforts are at different stages: some are research or development projects, some are internal uses, and one is part of a released game. Sony has not published a percentage showing how much faster AI makes game development overall.

There is no single Sony “AI engine” behind these projects

Sony’s public examples span separate tasks and levels of maturity. AnimeCanvas was described as under development in Sony Group’s 2024 Corporate Report. Sony reported using machine learning to assist subtitle synchronization in certain languages for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Its India dubbing and translation work was described as research. In games, Sony has discussed internal workflow tools, QA automation research, and Gran Turismo Sophy, which became a feature in Gran Turismo 7.

Initiative Task Status in Sony’s cited material
AnimeCanvas Anime production Under development in the 2024 Corporate Report
Subtitle synchronization Localization for certain game languages Reported use in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
Dubbing and translation in India Video localization Research, not a documented public service
SIE studio workflow tools Software engineering, QA, 3D modeling and animation Internal use described in Sony’s May 2026 strategy release
PS5 gameplay automation System-software function testing Research described by SIE in December 2024
Gran Turismo Sophy AI opponent for racing gameplay Player-facing feature in Gran Turismo 7

The distinction matters: a research project, a studio workflow, and a feature available to players are not interchangeable evidence that AI has automated an entire production pipeline.

How is Sony using AI in anime production?

Sony Group’s 2024 Corporate Report described AnimeCanvas as software under development intended to improve the anime production environment, efficiency, and quality. Sony named A-1 Pictures and CloverWorks as central to the initiative, with collaboration from SMEJ and engineers across the Sony Group in its 2024 strategy material.

Those descriptions establish an aim and development status at the time of the 2024 report; they do not establish that AnimeCanvas launched, quantify any gains, or show that anime production has been automated. Sony’s May 2026 strategy release discusses wider AI-supported studio workflows, but does not provide an updated AnimeCanvas deployment status.

Is Sony using AI to dub anime?

Sony’s 2024 report described research in India using AI and machine learning to shorten dubbing and translation for video content. The report does not say that this became a released dubbing service, establish a production rollout, or identify the work specifically as anime dubbing.

Sony AI’s research portfolio also describes creator-oriented modeling across areas including anime, language, dubbing, and translation. It says the work explores controllable systems for editing, restoration, translation, and creation. That is a description of research interests, not evidence of a commercial tool or measured production result.

What AI has Sony used for subtitles?

Sony’s Corporate Report 2024 says machine learning and voice-recognition software were used to synchronize subtitles to character dialogue in certain languages for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Sony described the workflow this way: “By applying voice-recognition software in certain languages, we were able to automatically synchronize subtitles with each character’s lines, thereby significantly shortening the subtitling process.”

This is a specific reported localization use, not a claim that subtitles in every language—or all game localization—are produced automatically. Sony did not give a percentage or a time comparison.

What AI tools is PlayStation using to make games?

Sony’s May 2026 corporate strategy release says SIE studios use AI-powered tools to automate repetitive workflows and improve productivity in software engineering, QA, 3D modeling, and animation. This is Sony’s account of internal studio use; the release does not provide task-by-task benchmarks or identify a numeric productivity gain for those workflows.

Generative AI pilot with Bandai Namco

The same May 2026 release says Sony and Bandai Namco are piloting generative AI and other advanced technologies in video production. Sony reports “significant gains” in speed and productivity per person, but gives no percentage, time saved, baseline, sample size, or independent validation. Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki said “human creativity must remain at the center” and that “AI is not a replacement for artists or creators.” These statements and the productivity result are Sony’s own claims in its strategy release.

Cross-media production is not automatically AI

Sony’s 2024 Corporate Report also described Unreal Engine collaboration and reuse of 3D assets across formats. One example involved components from a virtual-production music video being reused for a game set in the same world; the report also discussed a proof-of-concept CG short film. These are examples of production collaboration and asset reuse, not evidence that every such workflow uses AI.

Does Sony use AI for game testing?

Sony Interactive Entertainment’s December 2024 technical post described research into automating PS5 system-software function tests by replicating gameplay using only information available to ordinary users on screen.

The described system combined imitation-learning model development, recording and replay of controller-operation histories, and image-recognition-based model switching. SIE framed it as research intended to make QA more efficient and reduce costs. The post does not present it as a generally available testing product for other studios or as a replacement for human QA.

What is Gran Turismo Sophy?

Gran Turismo Sophy is Sony AI’s racing-game AI, developed in collaboration with Polyphony Digital and SIE. Sony AI identifies deep reinforcement learning as its core approach. Unlike the anime and QA efforts described as development or research, Sophy crossed into a shipped, player-facing product: Sony’s 2024 report says Sophy 2.0 became a permanent feature in Gran Turismo 7 in November 2023.

How much faster does AI make game development?

There is no overall percentage in the cited Sony material. Sony’s May 2026 release reports significant speed and per-person productivity gains for the Bandai Namco video-production pilot, but publishes no figure or method for measuring them. It likewise does not quantify the impact of AI tools across SIE studio tasks. The 2024 report’s subtitle example says the process was significantly shortened, but supplies no percentage; its AnimeCanvas and India localization descriptions also give no numeric results.

So the evidence supports a narrower conclusion: Sony reports AI assistance in specific workflows and has a released AI gameplay feature, but the public information cited here does not show a company-wide development speedup or a measurable percentage that can be applied across games.
