You can change your YouTube channel name without changing the name on your Google Account. On a computer, open YouTube Studio and go to Customization > Profile, edit the channel name, and select Publish. The new name applies to YouTube; it does not rename your Google Account.
What changes—and what stays separate
Your channel name is the display name people see on YouTube. YouTube lets you edit it in your channel profile settings independently of your Google Account name. YouTube Creators described this separation in a May 24, 2021 tutorial, and YouTube’s current help instructions continue to treat them as separate settings: YouTube Help: Manage your YouTube channel’s profile and YouTube Creators’ 2021 tutorial.
Your handle is another separate field: it is a unique channel identifier, shown on channel pages and Shorts. A handle has a matching address such as youtube.com/@handle. Changing your channel name does not necessarily change your handle. YouTube’s standard channel URL, meanwhile, uses the channel’s unique ID. The YouTube Team’s handle announcement explains the distinction and says existing personalized URLs redirect to the new handle-based URL.
Change your channel name on a computer
- Sign in to YouTube Studio with the account that manages the channel.
- In the left menu, select Customization, then Profile.
- Enter the new channel name.
- Select Publish.
The name must comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines. These steps edit the YouTube channel profile, not your Google Account name.

Change your channel name on Android
YouTube documents name editing in either the YouTube app or the YouTube Studio app. In the YouTube app, open your profile picture, select View channel, and edit the name. The available profile-editing route in YouTube Studio may differ by app version; consult YouTube’s Android instructions for the current steps.
Limits and effects to know before publishing
- Change frequency: YouTube says a channel name can be changed twice within a 14-day period. Handle changes have a separately stated limit of twice within 14 days; the two fields are edited independently. YouTube Help
- Propagation time: The new name may take a few days to appear throughout YouTube.
- Verification badge: Changing the channel name removes the channel’s verification badge. Verified creators should account for this before publishing.
- Where the change appears: YouTube says channel name and picture changes are visible on YouTube. To change the Google Account name or picture, use Google Account settings instead.
If YouTube will not accept the new name
First check that the name follows YouTube’s Community Guidelines. If you still cannot update it, YouTube says to delete any channel-name translations and then try again. The current help page includes the profile controls and troubleshooting guidance: Manage your YouTube channel’s profile.
