In this Game Boy Color game, Link explores Holodrum and uses the Rod of Seasons to change the environment. For beginners, the key is to read the scenery as a puzzle clue, check which seasonal powers and items are actually available, and return to blocked paths after gaining new abilities.
How do seasons help solve puzzles?
A season change is a way to alter access through the landscape, not just a visual effect. Nintendo’s Oracle of Seasons game page describes the Rod of Seasons as letting Link change seasons and highlights how those changes affect the terrain. When a route seems impossible, look for nearby plants, water, or a change in elevation and ask what a different season could do to that obstacle.
- A cliff with a small plant nearby: Spring can make a flower grow, giving Link a way to climb up from below.
- A deep lake blocking the way: Winter can freeze the water and create a crossing over the ice.
These are official Nintendo examples, also described in its July 2023 announcement of Oracle of Seasons for Game Boy – Nintendo Switch Online. Use them as hypotheses when a puzzle presents similar scenery; the game’s season-changing premise does not mean every obstacle responds to every season.
What should a beginner try when a route is blocked?
- Inspect the obstacle and its surroundings. Notice plants, water, and terrain rather than repeatedly attempting the same movement.
- Ask what would change in another season. A plant may grow into a useful foothold in spring, or water may freeze in winter.
- Check whether the needed season is available. The Rod’s seasonal powers are gained as the adventure progresses, according to the community guide at Neoseeker’s Oracle of Seasons FAQs. You may not have the required option yet.
- Mark the path mentally and move on. If you lack the needed power or item, continue along the available route. Once you gain a new seasonal power or item, revisit one or two obvious barriers.
Returning after progression is a practical exploration strategy: seasonal changes can alter access, and the powers unlock over time. It is usually more useful than treating an unavailable option as a puzzle you must solve immediately.

Which items should you check first?
If an expected attack or defensive action does not work, inspect your inventory and button assignments before assuming an item is missing. Neoseeker’s community walkthrough notes that the sword and shield are inventory items that may need to be assigned to buttons. This is a setup detail from a community guide, not a Nintendo instruction; use the in-game equipment screen to confirm the current assignment.
- Check that the sword is assigned if you expect to attack.
- Check that the shield is assigned if you expect to defend.
- When you obtain a new item, inspect its description and think about which earlier obstacle it might address.
How should you explore after gaining a new power?
Use a short revisit loop rather than trying to remember every blocked route at once. While moving through an area, note a few clear obstacles that seem tied to a season or item. After gaining a new ability, return to the nearest promising one and test the relevant change. The examples Nintendo documents—spring growth and winter ice—make plants and water especially useful clues.

This approach also helps distinguish a puzzle from a progression gate. If the right seasonal option is not available, keep exploring the route the game currently allows; if it is available, test it against the environmental clue. Avoid assuming that every impassable screen requires a season change.

Nintendo announced the game for the Game Boy – Nintendo Switch Online catalog in July 2023, but that announcement does not establish current availability or membership terms in every country.
