After about 10 years developing Kafka applications, Matt McEwan says he built Kafka Streamyard to make a familiar part of the work less repetitive: investigating data across topics and preparing manual tests. The local-first desktop app is designed around those hands-on workflows, rather than serving as a general-purpose, multi-user Kafka administration platform.

The problem: Kafka investigations take more than browsing one topic

McEwan describes a gap between the Kafka tools he encountered and the work he did day to day. In his experience, many Kafka UIs focused on administration, while he repeatedly needed to trace data through a workflow, compare messages, and prepare tests. That is his account of his own work, not a claim that every Kafka team has the same problem.

A workflow may span many topics. For example, a developer might need to follow an event from a user-facing application into a database change-capture stream, then into topics that trigger other services. Finding those topics, keeping the relevant context in view, and repeating the investigation in another environment can involve a lot of manual work.

McEwan says he began an early version of Streamyard roughly six or seven years before writing his account. His goal was to build a tool around these recurring data-investigation and manual-testing tasks.

How Kafka Streamyard approaches the work

Streamyard is described as a local-first desktop application for macOS, Windows, and Linux. Its features are intended to make investigations easier to organize and common testing activities easier to repeat.

Find related topics and keep investigation context

Reusable topic-name filters support wildcards and nested Boolean logic, so users can define patterns for the topics they want to find rather than searching for each one separately. Live Views can bring related topics together in chronological order, making it easier to follow messages across a workflow.

The app also offers offset and time controls, background Live Feeds, and saved layouts. McEwan describes these features as ways to preserve useful context while switching environments or returning to an investigation after restarting the app.

Inspect messages and their contents

Streamyard is described as detecting message formats automatically and supporting Schema Registry. For less familiar or non-text data, it includes a hex editor for examining raw bytes. Users can add calculated columns and export data as CSV.

Message filtering uses Streamyard Language (SL). These capabilities are intended for examining Kafka data; their inclusion here reflects the product description, not independent testing.

Reuse test data and development workflows

Data Samples let users keep reusable message data, while session variables can help adapt a testing session. Playbooks are intended to reset parts of development or local Docker environments and make selected testing tasks repeatable.

There is an important boundary: McEwan says Playbooks are for development and testing, not a substitute for production CI/CD or Infrastructure as Code. Treat them as a way to streamline local or test workflows, not as a production deployment system.

Who Streamyard is—and is not—for

The product is aimed at developers, testers, and DevOps engineers who investigate Kafka data, prepare tests, provide support, or run team workshops. Its emphasis is direct work with messages and repeatable investigation sessions.

McEwan puts the distinction plainly: “Kafka Streamyard is not intended to replace a typical multi-user Kafka management platform.” If your main need is shared administration of Kafka infrastructure, this is not positioned as a replacement for that kind of platform. If your work centers on tracing data and repeating manual tests, its workflow focus may be more relevant.

Trial, license, and current release

The official pricing page lists a 14-day trial and a base price of €37.50 for a one-time, named-user desktop license. The listed price is before applicable VAT, sales tax, GST, or similar checkout taxes. The page says the purchase can be used on Windows, macOS, and Linux within its stated machine limits. Check the official pricing page for current terms and checkout details.

The official release page lists version 0.6.1 as stable, published on 1 October 2026. Its summary notes improvements to message imports, background task execution, topic metadata refresh, startup reliability, favorite layouts, and message previews. See the release page for the version history and any later updates.

What to consider before choosing it

  • Match the tool to the task. Streamyard’s stated focus is investigating data and supporting testing sessions, not replacing multi-user platform administration.
  • Check workflow fit. Consider whether topic filters, chronological multi-topic views, saved context, reusable samples, and development Playbooks address the work your team repeats.
  • Confirm your environment and terms. It is described as a desktop app for macOS, Windows, and Linux; review the current license conditions and tax treatment before purchase.
  • Separate test workflows from production controls. Playbooks are positioned for development and testing, not for production CI/CD or Infrastructure as Code.
