No—Spotify lyrics are not generally Premium-only. In September 2023, Spotify tested a Premium prompt with a limited number of Free users in two unnamed markets. Spotify’s later guidance says lyrics are available on both Free and Premium, although individual songs and features may vary. Lyrics saved for offline listening are a separate Premium benefit.
What Spotify tested in 2023
On September 5, 2023, TechCrunch reported that some Spotify Free listeners saw a message reading “Enjoy lyrics on Spotify Premium.” Spotify PR executive CJ Stanley characterized it as “only a test” and told TechCrunch by email that Spotify was “currently testing this with a limited number of users in a pair of markets.” TechCrunch’s report did not name the markets or disclose how many users were included.

The report documented a limited experiment, not a platform-wide policy change. It also did not say what Spotify measured or whether the test met its goals.
Can Spotify Free users see lyrics now?
Yes. Spotify’s July 30, 2024 Community response said the company would expand lyrics availability for Free users globally. Spotify’s current lyrics support page says lyrics are available across both Free and Premium tiers.

Spotify had also announced global lyrics availability across both tiers in 2021, for iOS, Android, desktop, gaming consoles, and TV, with Musixmatch as its lyrics partner. That announcement provides product history; the current support page is the better reference for today’s general policy.
Why might Spotify still ask you to get Premium?
A Premium prompt does not establish that all Spotify lyrics require a subscription. Availability can differ by song, account, market, device, and time. Spotify says rights-holder agreements also affect which lyrics it can show. The company does not publicly explain the internal reason behind the 2023 test or provide a test outcome.

If lyrics are missing, check another song and make sure Spotify is up to date. If the issue persists, treat it as a song- or account-specific availability issue rather than evidence that the Free tier universally excludes lyrics.
How to show lyrics in Spotify
On mobile, Spotify’s 2025 Free-experience guide says to swipe up from the Now Playing screen to see available lyrics. The app interface can change, and lyrics appear only when available for that track.

Streaming lyrics and offline lyrics are different
Being able to view lyrics while listening online is separate from having lyrics available without an internet connection. In its February 4, 2026 announcement, Spotify described lyrics saved along with downloaded tracks for offline listening as a Premium benefit. The same announcement said lyric translations and previews were available to Free and Premium users; rollout details may vary. Spotify’s announcement describes those distinctions.
| Lyrics feature | Free | Premium |
|---|---|---|
| Lyrics while streaming | Available where Spotify has lyrics for the song and account. | Available where Spotify has lyrics for the song and account. |
| Lyrics saved for offline listening | Not identified as a Free benefit in Spotify’s February 2026 announcement. | Spotify identified offline lyrics accompanying downloaded tracks as a Premium benefit. |
| Translations and lyric previews | Spotify’s February 2026 announcement described these as available to Free users. | Spotify’s February 2026 announcement described these as available to Premium users. |
These plan distinctions describe Spotify’s published guidance, not a guarantee that every feature is available to every account or in every market.
